Prozac Vs Xanax For Very High Anxiety

Hi, I have very high anxiety.. I've tried everything!! I didn't want to be on any narcotics because I'm a opiate addict for 10 years and been clean for 2 years!! (Never looking back either, it was really hard to get off and I still think about it every day to this day). So I told my doctor this and that I did not want to be on anything that was addictive or a narcotic. So they prescribed me Prozac among a lot of other things. I had depression which I do not usually have. I have very very high anxiety and the only thing that seems to work is Xanax. Yes it is addictive and yes it's a narcotic. They won't prescribe it to me because I told them about my past addiction but that is the only thing that works. Has anyone else had experience taking Prozac and can say if it works as well as Xanax for treatment of anxiety?

Hello, Marissa! How are you?

While Xanax can be habit forming, it is not a narcotic, it is actually a benzodiazepine. It doesn't relieve pain, like narcotics do, it only works for anxiety, nervous disorders, trouble sleeping and similar issues.

And the FDA states that it could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability.

Prozac, however, is an SSRI antidepressant that can also help with anxiety and panic disorders. Some people also get pain relief from this class of medications, due to the way they work in the brain, it's been known to help with some types of nerve pain.

Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache and weight loss. It is not habit forming.

I've been taking Prozac for several years due to perimenopause hormonal issues that included hot flashes and extreme anxiety. It has worked very well for me.

Can anyone else chime in with their experience?
