Roy is correct, it is mostly prescribed as a combination pill that also contains Acetaminophen, the name brand for it is Darvocet.

Darvon if it is just Propoxyphene without Acetaminophen.

It is a very mild narcotic pain reliever. Used mainly in people suffering short term pain, or who are not used to taking opiates on a regular basis.

For people suffering chronic pain, it often does not help them very long and they have to move on to something else.

I used to be on it, when my spine first began seriously degenerating and I took it only when I absolutely had to, in order to delay the amount of time it would take for me to build a tolerance to the medication.

Once you have taken something stronger, or your pain reaches a point where the Propoxyphene no longer helps, then it is a waste to even try and use it. It will not help at all.
