Propoxyphene - Finding
UpdatedWhich pharmacies will mail propoxyphene 65 (Darvon) to the U.S.? This med is the best for neuropathic pain, and I am able to keep a clear mind, unlike other meds which make me feel drugged. This mild med is perfect for me and doesn't make me throw up like other pain meds. This med was VOLUNTARILY taken off the market in the US, not actually banned. It is not illegal to possess in the United States. I use the kind without acetaminophen to keep any liver damage away. I'm almost out and need to get some more of this med. Please help.

Propoxyphene and its relatives were removed from the market in the U.S. due to the fact that they can cause cardiac toxicity, so they were deemed unsafe to use.
And, since it is also a narcotic, possession of it in the U.S., without a valid doctor's prescription would still be considered illegal.
If it is prescribed to you in another country, where it is still on the market, you would be able to bring in a three month supply, as long as you have a valid presciption, however, obtaining it by any other means would still be considered illegal.

I can offer no contribution as to where pure Darvon 65, or Propoxphene pure, can be obtained worldwide, anymore. My last source, removed "Doloxene" from their inventory, as, it has been discontinued, in South Africa, My last prescription, was in March, of 2010. Mfg was PharmCare Limited, of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. "a pink capsule with 100mg of propoxyphene napsylate, equivalent to 65 mg of propoxphene 65 mg. like old USA Eli Lilly Darvon pure embossed 1883, as Darvon-N pure Propoxyphene Napsylate 100mg. "They actually looked identical to the old "Darvon pink Pulvules" embossed "Lilly" and underneath "H03" on one side, and "Darvon" on the second side, as was so very common from the late 1960's until the late 1980's, with eight versions of this drug, (Darvon 32mg and Darvon 65mg), (Darvon Compound) (Darvon N 50) (Darvon N 100) (Darvon Compound 65) (Darvon with A.S.A) (Darvon-N "pure propoxyphene naplylate") and, (Darvon N with A.S.A) page 415 of the 34th edition of the Physicians Desk Reference.
IMHO, (my 2 cents worth, the overdose deaths, thru USA DAWN reports, with, usually, victims, or, passive suicide patients, entered emergency rooms, DOA, or, overdosed, due to the intake, of alcohol number one, and, or other controlled meds, mild doses, but again, with lots of alcohol, which, the therapeutic window is very thin, to become a toxic combination!
for a Darvon overdose, when Darvon was mixed with alcohol. The official reasons, for voluntary withdrawal, are of course different, but, that has been my observatons over the past 50 years. By 1993, after the patent expired on some Eli Lilly products, this pain reliever, had fallen, to number 22, as "Darvon-N" by Eli Lilly; number 110, of the top 200 prescribed RX's that year, Mfg Rugby, and no, 197 as
Propoxphene with APAP, by Barr Labs.
Still, amazingly, only McNeil's Tylenol with codeine, outsold "Darvon N" at position no 11. Geez, how the world has changed, since the 1980's, with pain meds!

The initial Darvon 65 mg (propoxyphene HCL) Plain/Simple produced by E.Lilly and was used for mild to moderate pain; it held an intermediate position between Tylenol/ASA and the hard core narcotics, Oxycodone, etc.
Because of the wide-spread abuse Eli Lilly manufactured Darvocet N 100, which was Propoxyphene napsylate/Tylenol combination (Propoxyphene napsylate 100mg is the bioequivalent of Propoxyphene HCL 65 mg).
Wrong (from a medical lecture in the 1970s at a detox facility); the abusers would not be outdone and found a way to misuse it once again.
Sometime in the 70s, two PhD's from Sweden did studies about the toxicity of Propoxyphene and were joined by the consumer advocate Sidney Wolfe to attempt to have this medication taken off the market.
Now we respect these PhDs, but have they ever treated clinical patients that were taking Propoxyphene; we doubt that very much. And Sidney Wolfe, how many clinical patients has he treated that were taking Propoxyphene. He is an Adjunct Professor at an American Medical School. What does an Adjunct Professor do?
At any rate the medication was finally removed from the market and all of a sudden, after 50 years on the market, doctors discovered that it caused cardiac toxicity. Now would you trust an American doctor who was prescribing Propoxyphene for you for years and suddenly told you it might affect your heart????
And now the caveat - where are the piles of dead bodies located of the patients that died from cardiac toxicity from Propoxyphene. Is there a secret tomb we do not know about. Think about it!
Propoxyphene, as any medication, should have been used with the thoughts of abuse in mind, and with patients whose symptoms were by it, whether neuropathic pain, back pain, migraines, and in narcotic detox programs. Most of these patients took this medication because they wanted to function as normal human beings. It is like all medications and human variability; some medications work and others don't.
But it is a disgrace for physicians to allow government administrative bodies to decide what medications should be allowed or disallowed. In essence, they have taken over the Practice of Medicine.
