Prolia & Hair Loss (Page 6)

I've just recently had my second Prolia shot. So far so good...a little back pain. I continually have stress fractures on my feet and have also taken fosamax. My current problem is hair loss & I wondered if anyone else was having that problem?
Karen (# 366) --
Karen, what drug are you taking for your thyroid?
Re: Ruth (# 368)
Yes, I also was just put on thyroid meds. I was checked a few times and never needed meds but this last time the Dr. checked it twice and said I need to go on it.
Check your thyroid. I just had my thyroid check and put on medicine. Hair is full now
Yes I have hair loss from just one shot of prolia. I took it two years ago and after a month my hair started to fall out. I feel like half my hair is gone. Now my hair is much shorter due to breakage. I am so upset I used to have long beautiful hair.
Re: Gloria (# 365)
My hair is still falling out but I am hoping that the new drug that I am on for my thyroid will help. I worry now because I have terrible pain in my fingers and on each side of every finger I have these lumps growing. Very ugly and painful. I also have one on the underside of my arm. I have no idea what this now is but I blame all of this on Prolia. I was healthy until the shots and the shots never showed any improvement on any bone scans.
I began having hair loss with the first shot of Prolia and back pain, and many of the other side effects of this drug. My hair continues to fall out. and I have tried a lot of different hair loss products, and none seem to help. For me Prolia has been a nightmare for me and I will never take another shot. A horrible drug. Hope this helps others to not suffer like I have from this horrible drug.
My hair has always been fine and thin and I noticed shortly after my second shot which was October 2018 their was lots of breakage and also losing some at the roots. My scalp now shows in many places and I have to use a root concealer to help. After reading the many messages of hair loss from others I went to my dermatologist who agrees that it is Prolia that has caused my hair loss after all other tests ordered to rule out any deficiencies. I am devastated and would like to believe that it will grow back and that this drug will leave sooner or later. I was scheduled for my third shot just two days ago which I canceled last month and will never, ever listen to the doctors who have pushed this drug on me. I have refused for a year and a half not to take Prolia but since my DEXA scan numbers were declining I agreed!! Shame on me!!
I have been taking estropiate since menopause. They do not make it any more, so taking estrogen. And still have my uterus so take progesterone too. I am 75. My bones are good, no cancer, my hair is fine. Sex is good. I think they lied about estrogen being bad after menopause. Your body needs it for bones and hair. Ask your doctor?
Re: julie (# 349)
Thank you for your post, I agree with everything you stated. I took 7 shots beginning in 2012. I was not told of the many side effects of this horrible drug, Prolia and trusted my doctor and did not research the drug until I started having horrible side effects, last shot was in 2015 and I am still not the same healthy person I was before taking Prolia. As I stated many times, I has been a nightmare drug for me. Again, thanks so much for your post, hopefully it will help others.
Re: Gamp (# 360)
Prolia and Xgeva are the same drug, densoumab. Xgeva is being given to cancer patients with bone cancer. I had a friend that received many injections of Xgeva for bone cancer. At the same time, I was taking Prolia. She and I started comparing the horrible side effect of the drug, densoumab. We were both having very similar side effects. She unfortunately passed away, and she died believing the drug was deadly for her. It affected her heart and other parts of her body. As I have stated so many times, I wish I had researched Prolia before I ever took the first shot. It has been a horrible nightmare for me personally and many others. FDA should take it off the market, I have reported it to them but nothing has been done. Amgen, the drug company is making mega money at the expense and health of many patients. I hope this helps someone to not have to suffer like my friend did and myself.
Re: Gloria (# 359)
I only had 2 shots the last exactly 4 years ago. I think Xgeva is the cancer drug you mention. My hair seems to be growing a bit now, but it's still not normal. I also think it caused my immune system to go down and in Jan. 2015 I had a bad virus which ultimately led to significant hearing loss with Tinnitus. I had the flu shot that season...which we know is no guarantee. I've told friends not to consider Prolia.
Hi Gracie, from experience, when I was taking Prolia, I had a lot of hair loss. I am still using products to help keep my hair for thinning and my last shot was in 2015. The drug in Prolia can stay in your body up to 10 years. As I have stated so many times, trying to help others not to go through what I have been through and am still going through, Prolia was a nightmare drug for me. I wish I had done research before ever taking one shot. The side effects have been horrible for me, and now they are using the drug in Prolia, marketed under another name for Cancer patients. A form of chemo, I would say yes. I hope this helps you and others. Sincerely, Gloria
Re: Marilyn (# 355)
My doctor also stated that none of his patients had ever experienced any problems with Prolia. When I reported the hair shedding that began two weeks after the shot, I was told it was not Prolia and porbably was something else Prolia was THE ONLY DIFFERENT THING IN MY BODY. Sometimes 2 + 2 actually do equal 4. It is easy to say no one has side effects when all of the reported side effects are casually dismissed.
Re: VerFree (# 356)
I am in several support groups for Prolia and Osteoporosis. Hair loss is actually a frequently reported side effect.
Re: dietitian (# 350)
It is not listed as a known side effect of Prolia, according to FDA and manufacturer reports. Typical side effects include injection site irritation, redness, skin rash, and hypocalcemia. However, there is no way to really know how any given medication will affect anyone that tries it.
There is a report of one man experiencing alopecia areata, after taking Prolia in National Library of Medicine archives. You can read the report for possible reasons for it.
Are you on any other medications?
As to apologizing for stating that a multivitamin helped, please don't worry, you had your hopes up and tried to help others, it's what most of us would do.
The American Academy of Dermatology has a great article on thinning hair, and hair loss, including possible causes, and what might help.
I know that article states female patterned hair loss, but most of the remedies can help both males and females.
Re: Daisy (# 354)
I had extreme pain in and around one of my eyes off and on that my ophthalmologist could not explain which has gone away now that I stopped Prolia. I am nine months out from my last shot and still have the persistent cough with mucous, but fatigue lessened, acid reflux improving, and I think the amount of hair loss is starting to slow. I don't see any signs of regrowth in bare spots, though, although I am now shaving my legs again after a year of no regrowth. When I told my doctor about these issues, he actually ridiculed me and was adamant that NONE of his patients had EVER experienced a single side effect
Prolia gave me a bony tumor in my eye socket. Two years later my rheumy who is involved in research told me Prolia is being investigated for causing many, many bony growths under the tongue. It's only a matter of time before it's recalled. Be careful.
Re: Gloria (# 352)
My doctor recently had me tested once again for thyroid problems. It is the third time since I stopped the shots. Another Dr. I had gone to suggested this test once again. This time the test failed. I am now on thyroid meds. My hair is still falling out but the doctor thinks after awhile it will stop. The Dr. said it takes a long time to fix hair problems with new medicine. I have problem after problem with pain in my bones as well. I still ride my bike every night for 30 minutes around the neighborhood. I have started losing weight on this thyroid drug so time will tell with all of this mess.
Re: Gracie (# 2)
Prolia has been a horrible drug for me, an absolute nightmare. Hair loss, unbearable pain, I have suffered most of the horrible side effects of this drug. It is now marketed for cancer patients! Wish I had been more educated before I ever took the fist injection. $1984.00 per injection, Amgen drug company is making a killing, and hurting others, they do not care. As I said, it has been horrible for me, poison is what I call it. More negative reviews than positive, on a lot of forums. Hope this helps.
Re: dietitian (# 350)
Don't feel badly..vitamins surely didn't hurt and may have helped with some other problem. I did not take my second shot. Stil losing hair but not as much. We all try whatever we can to deal with the consequences of Prolia
