Prolia & Hair Loss (Page 16)

I've just recently had my second Prolia shot. So far so good...a little back pain. I continually have stress fractures on my feet and have also taken fosamax. My current problem is hair loss & I wondered if anyone else was having that problem?
Gamp~Unfortunately, I, myself, have written that Prolia is chemo which is very untrue. I am sorry for writing that and I was 100% wrong. The Xgeva makes bone strong in people who have cancer that has spread to the blood or the bones. Undergoing chemo and radiation, bones need to be made stronger, thus the reason for Xgeva for people whose cancer has spread beyond the beginning which is generally in the breast and yes, men get breast cancer too. It has zero to do with chemotherapy and everything about building up bone mass which unfortunately is old bone being built on top of old bone. Perhaps victims of that vicious disease care less about how it works, just that it does work so they do not have spinal collapse and other very large bone problems. One syringe of Prolia is 1.7mL and in it there are 60mg of denosumab. The l.7mL =1,700mg of which one can subtract the 60mg of Prolia and we know what is in it...basically salt water. Do we have this explained well now? It does not treat the cancer. It makes bones stronger for those that are receiving chemotherapy and radiation therapy to kill the cancer cells in their blood or bones. Thanks all. Pood
I'm still losing hair 7 months after my shot (first & only); I've actually been losing more this past week. The hair loss seems to go in cycles. Very unhappy my doctor recommended this med & with the side effects.
Yes, there is a published medical paper by 3 doctors that caused a male using Prolia to go bald when his genetics showed it to be IMPOSSIBLE. I would like to know who 'they' are that may be representing us in this regard against Amgen. So far, we are hunting down attorneys that may take a legal case. I've been searching for two years and so has Diana. So far we are at zero unless one has a broken femur.
Karen~that's what I was told too but we are losing too much for just old age. That is why we have to have hair follicles checked well by a Dermatologist to make sure they are capable of starting to regrow hair, not having A. Alopecia. I know it cannot be 'old age' because my brother is 7 years older than I and he still has nice hair. I do not after Prolia. Then, reading the published medical paper about A. Alopecia did it. That is why we have to check with our Dermatologists to make sure we are capable of starting new hair growth. Be well~Pood
It was listed on my Medicare bill as a chemotherapy drug. That is when we went on this site to find out I wasn't the only person who was losing their hair by the handfuls since the Prolia shots started. I was never told that the shot was causing the hair loss. I was told it was OLD AGE!
I am experiencing hair loss. Have bald spots. 60 days after my shot. Not a listed side effect. Did find out that they are using prolia for chemotherapy for breast cancer patients. Our hair loss has been studied and confirmed.
I will they are reviewing my case now. Hopefully they will take it.
I saw the Dermatologist the other day. They found no evidence that Prolia was the problem for my hair loss. Let me know if you find someone to represent you. I had no hair loss till I went on Prolia. Unfortunately no studies have been done to prove our theory.
When everyone gets back from their dermatologist, please post the result here so we can keep a count on it for the possibility of a legal suit against Amgen. Going bald is definitely not listed as one of the side effects, but then teeth dying at the gum line is not listed either. I'm frantically searching for an attorney to represent all Prolia victims and the more evidence we have, the better.
For everyone's edification: Xgeva is NOT chemo. It is used to rebuild bone mass that has been deteriorated from the cancer which generally started in the breast. It rebuilds bone for a spinal collapse, hip and wrist. However, I did find a published paper written by three MD's regarding a male that used Prolia. His genetics showed it was impossible for him to have A. Alopecia in his lifetime. However, after Prolia he developed it and it closed the hair follicles on his head tight shut so that no new hair growth could ever start. With this new information, I believe we all need to get into our Dermatologists as soon as possible to make sure ours are not closed shut. If they are, we are beyond help and if not, then we can proceed with the remedy I suggested. The paper did not state how many Prolia shots he had. Sorry for having to tell the real truth about Prolia. Be well~
Poodle - Here area some links for you to find the information I mentioned in my last post:
Dosage: you answered part of your question in your response, when you said it comes in a 60 mg syringe. The 60 mg (milligrams) is the dosage amount. The dosage amounts for both Prolia & Xgeva can be found here:
Source - prolia (denosumab)
Information on Denosumab, which is the medication in BOTH Prolia (60mg) & Xgeva (120mg) & its uses, including treating cancer, can be found here on Wikipedia:
Source - wiki/Denosumab
The Denosumab is what defines the medication, not any additional elements such as saline. Our blood has a normal saline value; that information can be found on Wikipedia as well with a search. Saline solutions are often used in medications to prevent complications in treatment as well as re-hydration.
From the Denosumab page in Wikipedia you can click on the highlighted word monoclonal antibody to find information on the production of antibodies from mouse spleen cells—no mention of ovaries, but perhaps that can be found in another source I haven't yet found—& its use in treating osteoporosis AND cancer.
I am not comparing apples to oranges, I am comparing apples to apples. Prolia & Xgeva are EXACTLY the same compound (its formula can be found on the Denosumab Wikipedia page; one formula, two medications).
I don't know why you are fixed on arguing with me or trying to prove me wrong. It seems very personal. As I said in my last post, I am not attacking you; however, I have a graduate degree in Biology with a background in Biochemistry & am an educator as well. When I see information that is incorrect, my inclination is to offer corrected information. It is not to put anyone down, it is simply to offer corrected or perhaps additional information to consider. You may see it as attacking you, it isn't. We all can make choices: to not accept it, debate it, ask questions.
You & I don't need to continue on in this personal debate. It's about sharing information. And I am not the enemy.
Poodle, I wasn't the one who said Prolia has a chemo component to it...I saw it elsewhere in this thread...but you're right, I shouldn't say that without firsthand knowledge. I hope you will also call out the others who mentioned it here...thanks. All I know for sure is that my hair is still falling out and is not growing like it used to. I was mainly curious if others had that side effect, and it appears they do, so I'm done with this.
Jwla~I searched every site about Prolia and how much of the active ingredient is in Prolia. Nothing says how much. It just says it comes in a 60mg syringe. We know a lot of what is in that syringe is saline. We don't know how much of the 'Chinese hamsters ovaries' is in it. This leads to a conclusion that none of us really knows. I am even wondering if Amgen will tell us as it may be a trade secret. Have you ever thought of that when you were comparing apples to oranges?? Pood
Combination is one bottle of ALL of the B vitamins. One bottle of Vitamin A. One bottle of saw palmetto for women. Take as directed on your bottles. Mine say the B's and A are to be taken with a meal. I bought two of each to make sure I have sufficient on hand to stop hair loss and regrow my hair. Maybe we will need three. I do not know but I know the formula works and has proven results. What do you have to lose? Pood
Did I ever say anything different about how Prolia is taken? I know exactly how Prolia is given. I am getting very tired of all the misinformation on this site about Prolia. It has more than sufficient problems that one does not have to make up false stories about it. I found how to make our hair grow again and be healthy but you want me to tell you every little step. That is impossible as it would be advertising. I told you what to buy and read the directions on the bottles of how to take all three items. This is not brain science ladies. Buy and read and take as instructed on the bottles of the supplements you bought. Just make sure the saw palmetto is for women, not men. We do not have prostrate problems.
Prolia has 60 mg, Xgeva 120 mg. I wouldn't call that "much, much, much less" a dosage, although since Xgeva is usually given every 4 weeks rather than twice a year, a patient does receive more of the medication over time, so it would then be a much higher overall dosage. Xgeva is used to treat giant cell tumor of the bone & bone metastasis, which is when cancer cells spread to other tissues, in this case, to bone. My understanding of chemotherapy is that chemo involves any chemical that treats cancer, so I would say Xgeva is chemo. Prolia is exactly the same chemical compound, just half the dosage. At any rate, Denosumab has a lot of side effects that come along with it, many can be pretty nasty, & we as patients need to be aware of them. My doctor didn't go through them with me, I just got the info sheet & was told to read it. We all really need to research these new drugs before taking them. My purpose wasn't to attack the information you put out here, Poodle, but to clarify, as far as my understanding. I could be wrong. I appreciate what you have shared to help us all, as well as what others are sharing as well. I am sorry you have had to experience cancer, & am glad you have survived. I know it's a tough battle.
Gamp~the effect on our immune system with Prolia has zero to do with chemo. it decreases it a little so that certain infections can happen. By the 6th month the immune system is back to normal again. I know of no one that has got cancer from being on Prolia. Look at all the new biologics. They affect the immune system. Do you want to say that Humera is chemo too although it is used for Chrons Disease and dermatological problems. Please do not misinform people. They have enough to deal with without adding in false claims. Thanking you in advance, Pood
Jwia~please stop misinforming people. Prolia does not treat cancer in any way, shape or form. It is for bone density - causing old bone to grow on old bone, thusly, giving the body zero new bone. It is true that Prolia has a twin called Xgiva. The second is for chemo. It has zero to do with bone formation. Prolia has so tiny little much of the active ingredient in it it's impossible to call it a chemo drug. I seriously doubt you know what chemo is like. It's not shedding. It all falls out - head, eyebrows, eyelashes and every hair on the human body. One also lies in bed for days on end after a chemo treatment being so sick that even water is intolerable. If you want to help people thru Prolia, please tell them the truth. Do you really believe the FDA would approve Prolia if it were for chemo? Pood
Amgen will tell you that in 6 months you are free of Prolia. That is what all their literature states and that is the reason for an injection every 6 months. Just because Prolia is gone, does not in the least mean that side effects are gone as Prolia can and often causes major damage to the human body. Prolia does NOT treat cancer. It's twin, Xgeva does. Prolia has much, much, much less of the active ingredient in it. We know it is made from ovaries of Chinese hamsters. Amgen also states the half life of Prolia is 16 days so do the math. I dislike my comments being misconstrued. The only legal action in the USA against Amgen for Prolia is the broken femur. I seriously doubt any of you know what chemo is truly like. I do! Been there and done that. I am only here to help people thru Prolia since I am a survivor. Pood
I will buy Saw Palmetto and the vitamins, and I will post the information in a month, and see if this lady's information works. All I can say is as long as I don't brake another bone I will be very happy!
