Procedure For Stopping Eliquis And Going Back To Aspirin (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Re: David (# 1)
My Doc tells me that Eliquis completely metabolizes out of the body in 24 hours, and no "taper off" is needed. Assuming that your Doc is recommending that Eliquis be stopped, just stopping is good. My pulmonary embolisms were caused by air travel, and if I have another, I will be on Eliquis permanently. But, with Doc approval I have now stopped.
Thank god for all the people who have posted regarding the drug Eliquis. Since Sept. 1, 2015 my horror story would have started and continued these 2 years and 5 months later, but for some truly remarkable gut feeling, I contradicted an almighty heart surgeon's dictum to me, that at my age 83, at the time, with my high blood pressure, and my proven AFIB (an irregular heart beat) I would have to take Eliquis and the drug Metoprolol permanently for the rest of my life or else I would either have a stroke or a heart attack in very short order. It was the hardest decision I ever have had to make knowing the frightening possibilities. Going on the internet I found this chat room with so much great information. Now it's been two and almost one half years later and instead of the DRUGS, I take every supplement I know of to thin my blood NATURALLY, plus 81 mgs of aspirin, plus other supplements, all vitamins, cut out as much salt and sugar as possible, exercise regularly and keep busy with painting, singing, gardening, cleaning - it goes on and on. I regularly feel I'm always behind. Today everything moves so fast that stresses me out more. A lot more than worrying is it going to be a stroke or a heart attack. I definitely made the right decision for myself and at least half of my decision was the result of reading all your most appreciated posts.
Just left the doctor's office 20 minutes ago after my three-month follow up after a successful ablation
(two previous cardio versions failed). Doc gave me go ahead to get off Eliquis and on to a baby aspirin.
Lost 45 lbs., changed my diet, and walk 40 minutes per day in addition to diligently using my CPAP each night (sleep apnea was diagnosed one month after a AFIB!). Doc said to keep doing what I'm doing to maintain sinus rhythm.
Feeling better already! Keep the faith, everyone, and hang in there. It was a long 10-month journey for me.
I had an ablation for afib and it is the best thing I ever done. I was very scared but knew I could not continue like I was. The surgery was successful but now I am preparing to stop Eliquis and am very nervous about it but have no regrets about the ablation
Saw my doctor 7/6 and requested to be taken off of Eliquis. He replied that with my history; i.e., my age, 71, and high blood pressure, it wasn't a good idea. I had to correct him about the BP. I have NEVER had high blood pressure and was only prescribed Atenolol to slow my heart rate. He did say that if I did decide to go off Eliquis basically he would not be responsible, but that I should take one adult aspirin and toporol. Checked toporol. Again too many side effects. I have been on aspirin and one 50mg atenolol for three days and feel great!
I've been on Eliquis for a year for DVT's and PE's. Doctors now want me to stop taking Eliquis. No instructions or advise to take aspirin. I'm totally scared stiff of stopping Eliquis, because I have a genetic clotting disorder called Factor V Leiden. I've had joint pain, fatigue, insomnia, and wait gain while on this medication. I'm worried that stopping abruptly will cause another PE or stroke.
Anyone else have this clotting disorder and have stopped taking Eliquis?
Well I've been on Eliquis for a year following atrial flutter and 4 days ago I misplaced it so I haven't taken any in 4 days. Now I'm seeing all these terrible things written about it, but at the same time I'm seeing warnings not to stop abruptly. My cardiologist gave me the impression that it was virtually side effect free and I would be on it for life thereby greatly decreasing my mortality rate. Well I'm getting in the car and going to CVS right now and purchasing 81mg aspirin and let the cards fall where they may.
Re: David (# 1)
I don't think there's a person on the planet that's not aware of the option of speaking with a doctor. Obviously the reason people are on this forum is to get feedback from people other than doctors. Duh duh and duh.
Re: Rebecca (# 12)
Hi I have been on this vile drug for 3 years and am currently weaning myself off of it. I have had a stroke, which was a result of having gastroenteritis and not able to hold down any of my medication, but the down side was because I was on apixaban, my damage was more severe as there is no antidote for this drug and so my brain kept bleeding until the drug was out of my system.

One of the side effects of Eliquis is osteoarthritis.
Musculoskeletal:
Common (1% to 10%): Arthralgia, back pain, pain in extremity, osteoarthritis, muscle spasms, musculoskeletal pain, myalgia, arthritis
Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Muscle hemorrhage, joint swelling

I was put on Elliquis for a blood clot in right foot. been on it aprox 6 months, first I had a severe Nose bleed, the emergency room put a tampon up nose to stop it had to wear it for 3 days, I was told if you ever have another hemorrhage to hold the nose tight for 10 minutes and get to the emergency room, it stopped it. nose is still sore. 3 days agoI had a severe hemorrhage in kidneys, doctor gave a shot and put me on cipro, thanks to the Lord the bleeding has stopped, it is scary, I to go off it, my doctor told me to stop taking it for 3 days.
I was starting to taper off Eliquis due to the hemorrhage of nose and severe bleeding in kidney. 1 pill a day for 4 days after the hemorrhage, the doctor said to go off eliquis for 3 days - he was not aware that I had started to taper off, after the 3 days I started the 30 mg aspirin my doctor was on vacation was the reason I did not tell him. I have been off of it for 2 weeks no side effects that I know of feeling much better. Talk with you doctor on what he wants you to do.
I was put on eliquis after losing clumps of my hair w/ xarelto. Eliquis has given two bad uti's with blood in the urine. Initially given xarelto for an old blood clot in my upprr right leg, hair loss changed that quickly from xarelto to eliquis. With eliquis I have had pimple like sore with bumps on them that turn black and blue and quickly into an abcess w/ one day. Too many visits to doctors and very expensive with deductibles to be met (another story).
I have constant joint pain and need to take muscle relaxers to help the pain.
Scheduled a duplex venous doppler for next Tues. MD will take me off eliquis if it comes back showing no clots.
I was on xarelto for two moths and four months on eliquis.
My hair use to be thick and shinny, now it is dry and thinning with patches of little to no hair...very disappointing.
I took Eliquis for a year after my ablation for afib I kept asking my doctor to get off of it finally he said yes I feel so much better I take a 81mg aspirin daily I was not comfortable taking Eliquis and it made me feel bad I have been off of it for 19 days with no problems
Marty, did you have a good response to your proposed forum? Would be interested in participating. Had a most likely sports-related DVT with PEx2 about 18 months ago and bounced out of the hospital after 2 days. Am quite active, in my 70's, otherwise in good health and looking forward again to a prescription medicine-free lifestyle.
I was on eliquis for several months and my Dr just switched me back to 81mg aspirin without tapering off. Everything seems fine.
LINDA, that is helpful information. Can you tell us how you arrived at that conclusion: through personal experience or perhaps from a clinical perspective? Some of us may wish to approach our doctors with such info if it is an accepted protocol somewhere in the medical profession. Thanks/
Hi Frank. Sorry for the delayed response. What's the best number to reach you. We can discuss getting a forum going that comes up with evidenced based Best practice to get our arms around the whole blood thinner protocol. Thanks.
Marty
Re: David (# 1)
My doc is promoting eliquis and gave me no choices. Stupidly I started taking it until I found out how much it costs. Fixed income. They of course do not want to take me off of it. They either do it or I will go to the med association.
I have had afib for 5-6 rs now. I firmly believe taking a high powered aspirin would be just as good. Just want to get feed back. I feel like they are taking advantage of the condition. MONEY MAKER.
I tapered off. Every other day then every 2 and then every 3, then every 4 until the medicine was gone. Doctor didn't believe me when I told him the side effects I was having so I did it on my own.
