Prepopik Laxative (Page 5) (Top voted first)
UpdatedHas anyone in the US used this yet for colonscopy and what did it cost?
Prepopik may taste a little better and is a much smaller dose than drinking gallons of the old prep, but for me, it was 15+ hours of torture. Took five hours until it kicked in, but not much was coming out each time. It went on this like for hours, and I was in terrible burning pain most of the time. Moist wipes help the burning pain. I would rather drink the gallon of old prep and get it over with more quickly (2-3 hours) rather than drink the two small glasses of Prepopik and be in burning pain for 15 hours. Ten hours after my procedure, I am still going and in pain. This did not happen to me with the old prep. I never got "clear results" with Prepopik, but I did with the old prep. I was lucky they were able to do the procedure. I would say my fourth colonoscopy was a real pain with Prepopik. Worst one so far.
Posting to reassure those who are waiting after first dose. Hubby took his first dose at 4:30 p.m., started going at 9:30 p.m., about 4-5 times over the next hour. Second dose at 1:30 a.m. (5 hours before check-in time) with copious results starting about 2:30 a.m for about an hour. We thought he was done but then he suddenly had to go right as we were leaving the house. So, next time I would take both doses earlier to give both plenty of time to work. The only side effect was that he felt woozy for about an hour after the first dose. He drank the clear liquids within 3 hours after the first dose and within half an hour after the second dose. This is not on the Kaiser formulary so we paid $100, which was less than what Costco and CVS quoted. It was worth it for someone who was dreading the prep as much as he was. I would still do the gallon prep if I could do it in a split dose. It works faster so you get a better night's sleep.
Thanks for the info. My procedure will not be until at least 2PM so it would probably be better if I took the second dose in the AM, don't you think?
My colonoscopy is not til in March 2013. I was given the box of the Prepopik freely by the colonoscopy center. I was instructed to purchase one 10 oz bottle of the magnesium citrate which I did. My instructions are to drink the 10 oz bottle of citrate, a bit later drink the 5 oz of Prepopik and some hours later, the second 5 oz of Prepopik. The box of Prepopik states orange flavor. It contains two powder packets and a cup with a 5 and 8 oz fill line. So obviously 5 oz each time is a lot better than drinking a gallon of other stuff. You do drink your choice of clear liquids after each packet consumption of Prepopik to stay hydrated. I would at least ask your doctor if he has the free sample box he can give you. That way, it won't cost you anything. You might even try walking into the colonoscopy center where your test will be conducted, and ask for it there. Doesn't hurt to ask.
My dr advised, reduce food intake week before, no fiber 2 days before. Dulcolax the night before left me cramps. Also took RX anti nausea Zofran before each split dose. I also like the fact you can choose your clear liquids after each dose, I opted for veggie broth, tea & apple juice. Started working less than an hour after I began. Biggest issue? A very sore butt...I'd totally advise using Vaseline or Desitin in your anal area just prior to the first dose. I felt like the outcome smells a lot like ammonia, all-in-all, better than drinking the gallons of gritty stuff I had to do with my first colonoscopy 3-years ago.
Mine first dose took about 7 hours to kick in. You need to start a lot earlier than they say.
It seems to me that unless this company gets some reps out there to the gastro offices they are just going to continue to prescribe that terrible stuff. I am so glad to see a doctor actually prescribe it. My doctor hadn't even heard of it when I got it but that was back in late 2012. I had to pay $95 but it was worth it.
Took 1st dose at 4pm everything fine bathroom quite a few times but nothing too bad. 2nd dose at 1030. Haven't left the bathroom since 1040. Yikes ! Hope it's over soon. Totally still recommend Taste not bad and not that much to drink. Will recommend to others.
Comments were very reassuring, thank you. I have had previous preps which are nauseating. I had my doubts about prepopik as it didn't seem to be working. So, I took some of the old prep that I had from a cancelled procedure. Horrible! Thankfully I came to my senses and just couldn't stomach it so waited and prepok working, just slower. I wish I had started earlier, as mentioned above and done it all same day. Also wish I had gotten a coupon as it cost me $84 with insurance. Might still go with the dulcolax. Going to give it another hour.
Quite different...I'm due for a 2:30 colonoscopy, tomorrow. Contemplating weather to do 2nd dose, (it is now 11:30 pm,) if I started at 4:30, or just wait till morn. Understand anxiousness since I'm still waiting for it to work; Anything is a Blessing compared to past med experience!
Susan P, the instructions on Prepopik tell you to start at 4-6 pm then 10-12 am the second 5 oz. I started at 10 am because I wanted to be done at a decent time. I hesitated starting that early but since I couldn't eat or could only eat lightly that day I decided to start early. And was glad I did and next time, I plan to start even earlier! I took the second 5z at 3:30, after a couple hours it finally slowed to every hour until 10:00, then got up at 1, 5, and 7 am. I could not imagine at 10:00, instead of being done, that I would just be starting my second dose. But everybody and every body is different, so what I did worked for me and it was still a long day.
The last time I had it done, I didn't drink anything the next day because I didn't want to start it up again when my colonoscopy was scheduled for 10 am. The nurse said I should have drank water considering how dehydrating the whole process is on the system. So this time I drank a couple glasses and it did not start anything plus, I felt a whole lot better. Oh, I should mention that when I was at the clinic, a lady came in and they asked her if she was ready for round two. Apparently, she couldn't drink all the Golytely, didn't figure she had to, and thought what she did was good enough. Wrong. One day is bad enough, without having to go home and do it all over again.
Everyone needs to know that we are all different. Some people have very slow systems. I added 2 Dulcolax the night before because it seemed to be working very slow or hardly at all but my procedure was in the afternoon so I have plenty of time. I can't imagine anyone wanting to take the old stuff rather than this. I am sure much of depends on what you have eaten prior to taking the prep. For me this is the only way to go and doctor said I was really cleaned out well.
Yes. The best results I heard are at 6 pm the 5-6 hours prior to procedure. I woke up at 2 for my 8 procedure and was clean the doctor said he could have "eaten off of my colon"
Good luck
My doctor said to take one dose at 2 pm the day before, the other one at 8, which I did. It kicked in within an hour of taking it both times, and like I said, I just had about 4 very quick trips to the toilet after each one. I was completely done by bedtime and sailed through the night with nary a trip (except to pee). I did drink lots of liquids in addition to the 2 glasses, but those were all my choice as long as they were clear, none of that disgusting gallon of the gag-inducing horror show everyone has had to deal with until now
I absolutely loved the taste of Prepopik compared to suprep. It didn't linger on my tongue that salty taste!!!! Cost me $32 but well worth it
Jut had my colonoscopy yesterday. My procedure was at 12:45 pm. The MD office said to take at 4pm & the again at 10pm the day before. As I was anxious and wanted to get it over with- I started at 2:30pm and 8:30 pm. Both times it worked in an hour or so. I had a slight amt of cramping with first dose only- but not bad really. I'm glad I took the second dose at 8:30- as it enabled me to sleep a few hours. I was up in the BR about 3am and I was still using the BR at 7-8 am (12 hours after the second dose). It is a good product. Mix with very cold water and do mix it for 2-3 min. as the pkg said.
Just make sure the water is good and cold. It warms up with the stirring and the chemical reaction. It tastes much better cold than warm! I put the water in the fridge for 2nd dose.
I started Prepopik 2 hrs ago. I've been vomiting and feeling very ill. NEVER AGAIN!
Tasted ok not like the other preps I have had that smell like pinesol and dirt mixed together.this one tasted like lemonade koolaid with little sugar.I toom it 3 hours ago and nothing has happened yet so we will see it was 55 with my copay or 113 with out but as of right now id gladdly pay the 113
I tried PREPOPIK and it was really great. The instructions say to drink at a pace comfortable for you, so I'd make sure to follow the instructions on the box. For split-dose, drink the second packet approximately 5 hours before the colonoscopy followed by plenty of clear liquids up until 2 hours before the time of the colonoscopy. No problem there.
