hello ive got copd and consultsnt put me on 10 mg of prednisalone a day have been taking this for 7 months,but when i have a flaiir up of the condition i have to take 30mg a day for a week with antibiotics, problem id ehen that course is finished of 30 mg is it safe to just drop bk down to 10 mg daily or should i be taking 20 mg for ek then the 10 mg as usual? no one has said but it seems when i go from 30 mg to ten i dont dtay well for long. i usualy get chest infection monthly and that when my dose gets highered for a week. thankyou. ## It certainly wouldn't hurt you to titrate down from 30 to 20 and then back to 10. I went to the ER a little over a week ago for a severe allergic reaction. I'm not sure what caused the reaction but I had woken up with a swollen face and swollen itchy eyes. My left eye was so swollen it was almost completely closed. I had no problems with my breathing. When I arrived at the ER, they put me on on IV with prednisone and some allergy medicine. I went home about an hour later but he prescribed me prednisone pills to start the next day. The first day I was to take 6, then 5, then 4....until the end of day 6. I took the doses for the first 2 days but those 2 days were rough. I couldn't sleep at all. I was miserable. I ended up tapering down faster than prescribed. About every 6 to 8 weeks I go on a 16 day decreasing round of Prednisone starting w 40mg x 4 days, 30mg x 4 days, 20mg x 4 days, and 10mg x4 days. I have been doing this for 2 years. The results of the medicine are wonderful. I am 72, and actually have flashes of my youth from the drug. Near the end of the 6 to 8 weeks without the Prednisone I am quite miserable. I am interested in knowing the risks of decreasing to the 20mg level and just staying on long term for 6 months. ## The NIH lists the long-term risks of steroid usage as possibly including weight gain, moon face, fluid retention, congestive heart failure and immune suppression. Hey guys I was tapering prednisone and I was at 20mg and by mistake I took 30mg (I thought the pill was 10mg pills). What should I do? Should I skip the next dose for the next hours, any suggestions? ## Hi Michael! What did you end up doing? The only suggestion I would've been able to make, had I read your post sooner, was to check with your doctor or pharmacist. Tapering off of steroids has to be done very carefully, so I am not sure how much taking the wrong dosage and going back up would screw things up. Have been taking Prednisone 20mg pills split into 4 pieces for a bronchial infection. The pills are expired from 2010. I'm taking the taper off 6 to 1 portions per day. It doesn't seem to be taking effect, although it has worked in the past. Could it have lost it's effectiveness? ## As far as expired meds go, according to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. My doctor prescribed 10mg of prednisone to be taken for 7 days.. And adviced me to come back after 1 week.. But i was not able to come back for follow up check up.. I have some prednisone I got in 2005 are they still good 10 years later? ## Hi Kim, According a news article from the LA Times, many medications actually remain good for up to 20-40 years past the expiration date, depending on the substance and how they're stored. Harvard Medical School also has a very similar article stating that many medications are good well beyond the 10 year mark. Ref: health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update1103a.shtml I don't have a specific list of these exact medications, nor do I encourage taking something that's expired, but often times it seems that the date listed is based on mere speculation and not tested by manufacturers for efficacy past a certain time frame, even if it is still ok to take. My Dr. prescribed 4 tablets of 10 mg for 5 days and then 1 tablet for 30 days. I do have premature heart beat and after my first dosage (yesterday at noon) my heart feels fluttery.
