Pradaxa Side Effect

My husband was on Pradaxa for approximately 3 months. He started waking up every morning with blood on his tongue. He went to the ENT who scoped his throat & that was not the problem. He went to the dentist & that was not his problem. While off the Pradaxa for his procedure, the bleeding stopped. He has now gone back to Cumadin and their is no longer any blood in the mornings.

Based on the research I gathered about Pradaxa, it seems as though your husband was experiencing a severe allergic reaction/side effect to the drug.

If you take a look at the paragraph below, there are a lot of "excessive bleeding/blood" related side effects:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; wheezing); black, tarry, or bloody stools; chest pain; confusion; coughing up blood; dizziness, weakness, or unusual headaches; fainting; joint pain, swelling, or discomfort; one-sided weakness; pink, brown, or dark urine; severe or persistent sore throat or stomach pain; slurred speech; unusual bruising or bleeding (eg, excessive bleeding from cuts, unusually heavy menstrual or vaginal bleeding, repeated nosebleeds, unusual bleeding from gums); vision problems; vomit that looks like blood or coffee grounds.

The manufacturer guidelines note that one should seek medical attention right away if any of those severe side effects occur when using Pradaxa.
