My wife had a surgery for acute appendcits one month back and now had a problem inside.a tumor like efects when touching and severe pain also. I have been taking pantium pantoprazole 40mg. While on holidays I discovered actavis pantoorazol 40mg (much cheaper). I m presuming the two are the same , just different manufacturers. My father in law had a bypass about 6 years ago. He then developed colon cancer. He went for the op and is now cancer free. He was told however to take Pantacid 20. After the 1st month the Dr just continued giving it to him. He now gets weak regularly and has to be hospitalised for blood transfusion. They do scans and diagnostics, but can't find anything. What are the uses and possible side effects? ## I would also like to know the side effects of somac please. ## Well, it makes you feel very gassy. ## Somac is an international brand for Pantoprazole - The US brand of this is called Protonix. According to the NIH (DailyMed) it inhibits stomach acid secretion and treats GERD in the short term. Possible risks may include a reduced immune system / infection because stomach acid plays a role in killing bacteria. Side effects reported less than 5% of the time include flatulence, diarrhea, headache, and abdominal pain. If I'm not mistaken the brand Somac exists in Australia (and possibly other countries).
