Ozempic Gi Side Effects
UpdatedHello. I just recently started ozempic I'm type 2 diabetic and am overweight I've worked up to the .5 dose 2 more weeks I'll be on 1.0 is there anyone out there with any experience with this drug? At first I thought I was allergic as I broke out in a rash I thought was poison sumac, but not so sure now. And my bathroom habits have seriously changed from once every morning to several times a day. Any input would be greatly appreciated
Hello, James! How are you doing?
Ozempic contains the active ingredient Semaglutide, it used to treat type 2 diabetes. Its typical side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, as well as the risk of some serious possible side effects, like pancreatic inflammation, and kidney problems, though they are very rare.
The medication information does state that you should have the rash checked out by your doctor, as it could be the sign of an allergic reaction.
Has there been any change?
I am in my 8th week of Ozempic for weight loss and from week two I have felt sick. Symptoms include: headache, fatigue, constant dull stomach ache. Liquid diarrhea that has a really foul smell, dizziness. I did dishes today and barely got finished. Afterwards, I fell asleep for three hours. I have also been very cold, even though it is over 90 outside. I changed the shot location from my abdomen to my thigh and am currently taking .05mg. I have body aches and sore muscles now too. I tested negative for COVID-19 just last week so that isn't it. Can anyone enlighten me? Will I feel like this the entire time I am on this med? I am thankful for any input anyone can provide. Take care.
My Dr. called in the generic Ozempic to a compound pharmacy. I pull injections myself. First 4 weeks 12.5 units, then 25 after that. I am on week 2, after ten total days I lost 15 pounds. Yesterday, day 9, I had nausea and threw up all day. Finally got some Dramamine down and could drink water. Ate plain white rice, threw up. Had diarrhea as well. Mild headache could be from lack of food. Drank coffee this morning. How long does this phase tend to last? Does the stomach upset/diarrhea get better? I work from home so I can manage in the short term, was really excited about the healthy weight loss last week as my sugar cravings went away and I ate healthy just not a lot. Focused on protein and nutrition. Don’t want to be discouraged.
I've experienced severe diarrhea and nasty burps while taking Ozempic. Do these side effects eventually go away?
Re: Lala (# 3)
I love Ozempic my A1C is 6 it was 10..., I’ve lost 25 pounds. My doctor prescribed me zofran for nausea and it helps with stomach pain and the gassy burps. I do have to drink Metamucil or Mira lax to stay regular. Hope this helps.
I am almost through my 2nd month. I started at 0.25 to 0.5 to 1mg. I can barely eat, at all everything tastes horrible. I'm barely able to drink. I'm gagging constantly, feels like something is stuck in my throat all the time, the acid reflux is terrible. I have tried everything otc reflux meds etc. The med is working great but I'm not sure how much longer, I can stand being so sick. Did anyone else experience this? I don't want to stop the medication but is there any way to relieve these symptoms, I was hoping by now they would ease up. Pills are very difficult to swallow anymore. I am really hoping they ease up.
Thanks
I have had a not so awesome experience so far with Ozempic. Oct 14th I started with .25 mg. Now on .50 mg for about 3 weeks. From heartburn and acid reflux, to tummy pains, it has been absolutely insane, more than I have ever had. I also have been burping egg tasting/smelling burps which is making me nauseous. I also am nauseous at random with no rhyme to it, just whenever I guess my body decides it hates me.
I have lost 10 lbs but I also am not being strict on what I’m eating over the holidays (my bad). Wondering if perhaps the food choices have an affect on all of these things? Some of these things? Anyone else have these issues?
Also, I started eating less abrasive foods in hopes that it would subside, but sadly no… I still have acid reflux and terrible burps/gas. My appetite is minimal and I’m afraid to eat because I don’t want any of the above happening again.
I heard Ozempic can cause aging with wrinkles and skin sagging in the face. Has anyone had this happen?
I realized we're all different, but I thought I'd post before I throw my Ozempic away. I started at the lowest dose two weeks ago and had no side effects, but that changed drastically last week after dose #2. Not only did I experience major nausea, but my stomach hurt and I burped so much I couldn't sleep. Several days of being constipated later, I vomited after having a reasonable, healthy dinner. I barely ate anything at all last week, so there's no question as to why I've lost weight, but I'm concerned that if I continue on this drug I'll continue to suffer. My quality of life definitely suffered, and I eventually took a day off from work due to exhaustion. What I am looking for is a light - someone that might be able to say, "Oh, yes - that's what happened to me the first few weeks, but it all sorted itself out." Because otherwise, I don't think it's wise for me to continue.
I started Ozempic a week ago Thursday on the lowest dose. Friday I vomited five times, mostly undigested food from the day before. Then on Tuesday I was in bed at night and felt a small bit of pressure, very small, got up to go to the bathroom and proceeded to have very very watery diarrhea all the way to the bathroom no control at all. I’ve never experienced anything like this, it was a nightmare. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Hello! I am taking ozempic for weight loss. Does anyone feel nauseous when eating meat on ozempic?
I’ve had a severe stomach ache now for 12 hours after Ozempic and now I'm afraid to eat. What can I do to make it go away?
After my very first dose of Ozempic 0.25 mg I started to experience G.I. side effects, such as gas, belching, bloating, and headaches. How long will it take for it to get out of my system after just that one dose? The symptoms are awful.
Re: Valerie (# 9)
Poor you I hope you are feeling better by now. I am not sure what your dosage is but it’s probably too strong. I would go back or just take .25 until you are better. I am far from being an expert but I see this recommendation on most Ozempic forum. When a dose is too strong just take the lower dose and it should help. Please let us know if you feel better
Re: Donna (# 10)
Sorry you feeling so sick already. I can only tell you how I am using this meds so far and I hope it can help you feel better. I only staring a few days ago and after reading about this med I wanted to start VERY slowly in case I feel so bad on it. My doctor told me to make my way up to .25 so believe it or not I only started with 4 clicks because I was horrified I would get the dangerous life threatening side effect but thank go I am good so far. Next week I will do 6 clicks and see how I feel. Everyone’s body is different so you have to adjust. I have no idea how much you are taking but just take half to start and see how you feel. I hope this helps a little. Good luck??
I stopped taking Ozempic and switched to Mounjaro because the side effects were so extreme. I've had a lot better luck since. GI side effects are tough, even on Mounjaro (my experience) - TUMS has worked incredibly well, though - I tried everything. It cut down the stomach acid I was struggling with which seems to have helped my bowel movements, too.
Re: JT 76 (# 13)
My side effects never went away while I was on the lowest dose of Ozempic. At one point I was so dehydrated and exhausted I took days off work. I took myself off the drug and I'm on Mounjaro now. Good luck!
Good Morning! I have been on Ozempic for about three months and at a full dose for about one month. For the past week, I have been suffering with almost liquid diarrhea. I am wondering if this is common or if I should be discontinuing Ozempic? Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.
I was just hospitalized with sepsis, colitis and a GI bleed at the age of 45 with no previous GI problems. Enteric panel and C.diff tests were negative. I have to go get a scope now to see if they can figure out what caused this episode, but we are all thinking the Ozempic had something to do with it.

Hi. I am diabetic and overweight. I have been on Ozempic for almost 1 year and definitely have issues with eating and digesting meat, poultry, and seafood. I rarely eat red meat, but I do eat poultry, seafood, and occasionally, pork. I find that sometimes I feel nauseous during and after eating it. I also have less appetite, which can make it difficult to eat. I get frequent stomach/abdominal pain and very smelly loose bowels or diarrhea. When I avoid eating any type of meat or seafood, then the diarrhea goes away for the most part. I take a lot of other meds, so I'm not sure it's the Ozempic, but things have definitely gotten worse since I started the Ozempic. I have lost 22 lbs and my a1c is down to 6.5 from 8.8, but I am considering stopping it and just increasing my exercise and tightening my diet to lose at least another 38 lbs. I am going to talk to my doctor about it. I hope this helps.
Re: Anna (# 11)
Only if I eat too much or eat foods with too much grease. For the longest time I could not eat fast foods. I ate a lot of veggies and fresh fruits, but gradually have reintroduced other foods. But I eat less than half of what I used to. If I try to eat to much it will make me sick. If you look at proper food portions you will soon realize americans eat many times what we should.
Re: Dede (# 8)
I don't think it causes aging, it has happened to me. But I'm 77 so to be expected. I would think younger people would not have a problem with that. My DD is 52 and lost over 70 pounds and her facial skin is fine. I doubt I have the collagen or same youth to my skin anymore. But I don't care. Could hardly walk before and now with 40 pounds off I can. Also has smoothed out my hypoglycemia. And my doc said will benefit my heart. So I'm starting to look my age, who cares if you feel healthier and do well. I'm at a normal BMI, all the side effects have finally gone away. I never had to go beyond .50mg nor did DD who was pre diabetic. Our glucose levels are near perfect and now along with statins and changing diets our cholesterol levels are perfect too. We are both happy campers.
Hey. I’m on my first week of Ozempic 2mg. I went through the stages to get up to this dose. Been having extreme stomach pain and gas when I’m trying to go to bed. I have also been burping what seems to be an extremely odd smell to come out of my mouth. Should I go to doctor? I’m scared to tell him as he may want me off this med and I’m using it for my diabetes and hopefully to lose weight.
Re: Roger (# 4)
I too have experienced this where I have dropped from 1.0 back down to .50 started taking Pepmo Bismo to see if this helps.
Have also had violent episodes of vomiting.
I usually last 1 day but this is the 1st time in 3 weeks I’m going to try and work.
