Oxycontin Damaged My Teeth (Page 33)
(Newest replies first)

Has anyone else known oxycontin to rot the teeth? I used to be on vicodin until my doctor told me I needed to switch to a morphine based meds. She put me on ms contin but I had problems with it so she put me on 80mg oxycontin. Eventually my body built up a tolerance so she kept raising it, i have am now on from 4-6 per day of the 80mg tabs. It scares me that this is what rotted my teeth because only 5 yrs ago i had only 2 cavities that needed filling and then only 1 yr after going on the oxycontin i had to have all my top front teeth pulled as they where rotting from the inside out the dentist said my mouth looked like a heroin addict's mouth looks. He said it was shocking to him that normally he only saw such damage from someone who abused drugs with so much dental damage, but i have never done any street drugs and have only take my meds as prescribed to me. Now i have lost 80% of my teeth and as a beautiful 41 yr old mother its devastating. I cant afford dentures and sure cant afford implants like i would like to have. I am a single mother and refuse to date because i have lost my teeth now, i had beautiful teeth before i started on the oxycontin and only 2 small cavities that needed filling. Does anyone else have this same problem and if so why hasn't the company making oxycontin warn patients of this possible problem?

If i had known this would cause me to lose most of my teeth i would have never agreed to go on it. Of course my family doctor who has been prescribing them tells me she hasn't heard of any other cases, yet when i researched the med online there where others like this why hasn't something been put in the warnings about this med, i sure would have preferred to have lived in pain the rest of my life rather than lose my teeth and be unable to even eat now. My health has gone downhill fast as i cant even chew foods necessary for good health. All I can eat now are yogurts, and liquid type of foods which isn't much. My kids are 7 and 9 yrs old and they watch me cry when we go out to eat and they order steak, and i can smell it but can't order one as i know i wont be able to chew it. This is so devastating for me. I want teeth so badly if i could wish for anything in life besides not to be poor anymore it would be to have a full set of real teeth or implants but i could never dream of having them, and i don't know anyone out there willing to just help me get any either. I have always helped others all my life, but cant even help myself, i have had to have 29 surgeries now since 1991 when a drunk driver hit my car and caused me major injuries with my lower back and knees, i have had a full lower back fusion and 8 arthroscopic knee surgeries until a year ago they finally had to do a full right knee replacement and now they are talking about doing my left knee soon.

So my life has been up and down with surgeries and i would go thru one more surgery just to have teeth implanted if i could. but i could never afford it, but i would like to know why these drug manufacturers are making a medication that could cause teeth to rot like this without warning us patients or even warning the doctors about it. This is just terrible of them i think, as now i am the one paying for this by having no teeth to eat with at such a young age now. I am a vibrant young 41 yr old at 5'3, 120lbs, slim woman, nice looking too as i was a model in my younger days, so i keep my looks up. But to have no teeth now... I never smile anymore, I am to ashamed to smile even though it wasn't my fault i lost my teeth. I think they should pay for me to have new teeth but no one wants to admit that the med causes it, but my diet wasn't the problem back when i started the medication and i wasn't drinking coca-cola either or doing street drugs so i know that wasn't the cause either. The only thing that changed within one year to cause this was starting the oxycontin medication. Well, if anyone out there can help me let me know thanks.

How do I stop receiving updates on threads I've written on? I don't see a way to unsubscribe. This for me was answered in June but I get an email for every added response. Thanks for your help.

Hey tony, you made me laugh as when i read this thread about oxycontin and tooth decay i also almost fell off my chair also.I had a suspicion but nothing definite.About 5 days ago i had three teeth removed ,two upper one lower and at this exact moment am in quite a lot of pain. They were not easy to get out considering they were snapped off at the base.I had an infection,so the stitches had to be re opened. The dry mouth the oxys cause are not helping the healing process i might add.So yep,a fellow hill billy here also.My back is stuffed and am in quite a lot of pain just to walk. The depressing part is you try to relieve that pain for a better quality of life and this is what we get in return.More pain. They should have it listed as a side effect that if you take this medication for a prolonged length of time you will ultimately look like a gummy bear.Something just does not seem right with the secrecy regarding this medication as when i mention tooth decay and oxycontin both the G.P and Dentists look surprised and look at me like i am mad..Now i am a mad man with three missing front teeth...FARK FARK.....These things are meant to test us

Ive been dealing w/a mouth that has literally turned into a crumbling road to root rot. 8yrs ago this past April i was sitting in the dentist's chair getting Brite Smile teeth whitening done on a mouth that had only 3 fillings from childhood.I accredit this to my parents who,as a child, had my teeth protected w/a clear-coat that resulted to being cavity free for 20 yrs.! I attributed my current disaster zone to the whitening, bleaching off my protectant until my dentist(a specialist mind you)said the timing was just a coincedence. So as i thought about this i was like,"could the painkillers i had to take from '04 to '09 the cause?" I had a really bad accident on a quad that put me in the trauma unit&hospital bed for 3 mos.and then all that followed. So when i googled does oxy rot teeth,I almost fu***** fell out of my seat! I had no idea this stuff did this! To me one of theworst parts of this is that the rot is happening from the inside until the teeth are just so brittle til they break.I had NO PAIN and found out about the problem when i was flossing. Ipulled out not just plaque but a half-a-tooth came w/it. So i got a lil mouth mirror&began to look....lets just say within 3 more wks,2 other teeth were either chipped or fully broken. Last thing i wanna say is that the real disheartning part is that the damage can be fixed but stopping the process is not easy cus my gums have receded&they do not grow back. Also, ive been off oxy for 2.5yrs but its like a runaway train once this process gets rolling.Good luck to u all cus if anyone knows,i know what a b**** it is just to get off these, but then to look like a hillbilly, sucks.

it's bc after reading and going through her Myspace I have come to conclusion she is a con artist. Read this and you'll see for sure what I am thinking.

Intrestingly enough none of her links work to her supposed charity she runs either.

It's an indirect cause by all narcotics and your PM docs should have warned you. These meds cause dry mouth so the lack of saliva creates a breeding ground for bacteria/decay and without extra diligent dental care, will decay, abscess and be pulled unless you do something NOW to stop it. First, do you floss? There is a saying "only floss the teeth you want to keep". A lot of food gets caught b/w your teeth and up and the gum line and if you do not floss at least nightly, the decay will get worse. Once you see what's been staying in your mouth after you floss, I doubt that you'll be able to skip it (if you want to save your top teeth and I think you can). Brush several times a day and there are lots of mouth rinses that are made for dry mouth. Also, chew sugar-free gum as much as you can, it generates the saliva you need to keep your teeth clean. I have been on morphine for over 10 years and dilaudid as b/t and was warned about the dry mouth and at first I was with abscess after abscess and now I have NO problems. I also have a professional cleaning 4Xyear, it's not very expensive b/c you don't need any xrays but once - it's cheaper and much less painful than having all of these dental problems.

I had a similiar problem. I told the dentist to remove my bottom teeth, because most of them were missing. I now have bottom dentures, and im trying to stop the top ones from falling out.Due to shrinking gums.I think its called gingivitis or just not taking care of your teeth and doing drugs. Well, im preparing myself for if i do lose my top teeth and have no teeth at all. You have to mentally prepare yourself ahead of time or if you already lost all your teeth, get dentures. But they are usually very expensive and hard to eat with them on.If you search around, you could praboly find a dental clinic that just might work with you. or one of those dental colleges, they are always looking for patients and they charge alot cheeper than most dentist.I know exactly how you feel, thats is whats going thru my mind, because i still have my top teeth, but i can see that slowly but surely i will be losing them.

Hey Angela, I do feel so badly for you but I was warned by my doctor that ALL narcotics can cause and/or advance dental decay due to the dry mouth all of these narcotics cause. If you take morphine, fentanyl, dilaudid or oxycontin (have never taken myself), they all do cause that cotton mouth feeling. You need saliva to prevent the build up of decay at the roots of your teeth. It's too late for you but I do think as patients, we MUST take responsibility and do our own research and know what the benefits and risks are. Doctors do not have the time to tell us each and every detail about these drugs so where I really do feel for you, you must take some responsibility. 480 mg of OxyContin is an insane dose by any standard, and yes I know what debilitating pain is, I am terminal and I refuse any and all Oxy's and I use a prescription toothpaste to further protect my teeth and there are many products to use to combat dry mouth but not at the dose you are at. You say you never would have taken them had you known you would have these problems, with all due respect, which is it, unbearable pain that you require these meds and at these doses or tolerable pain knowing the side effects? I must take these medications but I take the lowest dose possible that allows me to be involved in what life I have left and I deal with truly unbearable pain. I use many different methods to deal with my pain that allow me to utilize a lower dose. The truth is, this is a HIGHLY addicting medicine and you got sucked in, I do believe the company should be held responsible in that they hid the true addictive nature of this drug but you, no matter what drug it is, will have to exercise good judgement and restraint. You are clearly bright, you can do your own research. I agree with the other poster, go to a dental school in your area, it is inconvenient but they will likely help you get your dentures for a significantly reduced fee, possibly sliding scale. Care Credit is another idea if you have the income to substantiate the debt, or will be approved. You can usually get one year w/o payments and then you can default or just make the minimums. Big question is, are you still taking these meds and at these doses? Also, all of your children are special needs? Did you take these meds during your pregnancies b/c the statistical odds of one mother having 3 true special needs children are HIGHLY unlikely unless you were taking these high doses during your pregnancies. Who will look after them because you claim that you are not responsible for any part of your medical treatment plan. We are all responsible for knowing what we take, why we take it and does the risk outweigh the benefit. I am dying and did not find the side effects to be worth it, I just Googled my options and chose the medications at the lowest doses I could manage at with the least side effects. By the way, my doctor did not know many of these side effects as he is trained as a diagnostician, my pharmacist however was very helpful with the medications themselves. I have had 22 surgeries myself, I have had to have a few root canals and have NO doubt it's due to the dry mouth. I added in over the counter items that are designed to prevent or reduce dry mouth and worked with my physician to find a dose and medication that best worked for me. I hope you will explore the many viable options you have been given, explore legal action where they take your case on a contingency basis, I know there has been some success with Atiq Suckers and dental decay. Also pursue an organization where professionals donate their time and resources, possibly through a church, etc. Good luck and for the rest of the people on this forum, DENTAL DECAY IS A HUGE SIDE EFFECT OF NARCOTIC USE.

This is what i had thought for a while and today i decided to do some research.I am in australia and was recently at the specialist dept at the dental hospital.I had mentioned that i think the oxycontin is ruining my teeth.Their reply was that they had never heard of that happening before and insinuating it must be my diet..My doctor had never once mentioned this and this vicious drug is to blame for more than just teeth..We seem to believe medical practicioners ,that when we are placed on a medication ,although they have side effects it is ultimately for our wellbeing.Until someone is in constant pain every day,and they need some type of relief, they will never understand what would make someone take this medication.I feel very sympathetic to all those that have taken this drug to ease their pain and now their health issues are now even more complicated.Personally i would love to shut this company down, for their deceptive ill informed leaflets..Nothing on the side effects brochure mentions anything about teeth..Dry mouth is mentioned and it is stated if it worries you talk to your doctor..That is a joke..The CEO of this company should do jail time..For the people out there who have judged others that have taken this med,to try and ease chronic pain to lead a relatively normal life, the only thing i can say is i f'n hope you get hit by a truck and suffer miserably until the day you die..

I promised I would print an update of my dental visit on 4/26/12 and here it is.
The dentist who is rebuilding my mouth has been in practice for 53 years and specializes in saving and revamping one's teeth. He thought that I had not been to a dentist in at least FIVE years. I had a root canal six months ago and go to the dentist every six months!
I had EIGHT abscesses in my mouth. He pulled my four lower incisors at the front of my mouth and is making a permanent bridge to attach to my molars that have porcelain crowns on them. He drilled all the decay from the INSIDE of my four upper front teeth, filled them from the back and bonded all the fronts to make new teeth. My front incisor had cracked and broken off and only a tiny portion was left. The dentist drilled that tooth and bonded it. It looks just like it did before the OxyContin. Next week he is starting to fill the rest of my teeth (EVERY SINGLE ONE LEFT!) in my mouth and bonding them also.
The cost of this?? SIXTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. - Yep - $16,000.00. I know that I am so blessed to have a patron who is paying for this work to be done. I realize how fortunate I am that I found a dentist who was dedicated to keeping my teeth. I know that he thinks I am or was a drug addict, but he is doing a fabulous job. The pain has been awful. So far, I have had four visits, with at least four more to complete the work.
I pray that SOMEONE can get an attorney to file a class-action suit against Purdue Pharmaceuticals for the lack of warning on OxyContin,
If anyone who is reading these posts is just starting to have dental woes, STOP TAKING OXYCONTIN NOW and get to a dentist! Perhaps some of your molars can be salvaged as mine are.
I remember each of you in my prayers and I only wish that all of you could afford to fix your teeth. It has been the most humiliating event in my 57 years.

John with an unhappy smile - count me in for a class action lawsuit. I too am losing my teeth and it has to be due to the Oxycontin I am on. I take good care of my teeth, yet I am losing them as they keep breaking off near the gum line. It is like they are rotting from the inside out. This is devastating. I don't want money either, unless it's enough to pay for implants so I can chew again and smile again. Maybe you could set up a page on Facebook for people who have lost their teeth due to prescribed medications and see how many people like the page. If a lot of people join, then perhaps you could get info on starting a class action lawsuit against the specific drug manufacturers involved and people from the FB page could all sign up as defendants. We all deserve to receive dental implants to make up for our loss. I, too, would not have gone on the drug if I had known it would cause my teeth to rot and fall out.

Ally, Sweetie, you are so right! Don't allow the haters on this site make you feel bad because you have to take prescription meds just to try to live a moderately pain-free life. It seems that there are always those who demean others to bolster their own non-existent self-esteem.
I'm in the same boat. I'm almost 57 (my original post is on here) and am losing my beautiful teeth. I have Stage IV leiomyosarcoma, a very rare cancer. I worked for 35 years at a high-paying, high-profile job. When I was diagnosed and after two surgeries that cost me every cent of my $600,000 401K, I was prescribed 80mg OxyContin 3 times per day. No one ever said ANYTHING about losing one's teeth!
They are STILL telling me it's from the massive radiation I had, which is BS. Purdue Pharmaceuticals never put in the contraindications that one would lose his teeth after a period of 2-3 years.
I SERIOUSLY have begged God to just let me die before I lose all my teeth. I have multiple metastases, but the docs at M.D. Anderson cannot (or will not) give me an estimate of how long I have left. There are people who have lived with Stage IV for TEN years. I pray that I am not among them.
I will not go out in public because of my teeth. It is heartbreaking to look in a mirror. The fact that half of my right forearm is missing from the tumor surgery does not bother me AT ALL. I don't mind people staring at the scar and I always tell them what happened. What I cannot stand is when they stare at me and think, "She's a crack addict". Some people have asked me how long I smoked METH. I have never taken an illegal drug in my LIFE. The fact that I still dress well, always fix my hair, and apply makeup, puzzles people and I know what they are thinking. "Why is she bothering with clothes and fancy jewelry when her teeth are falling out?"
A very nice wealthy man who lives in my town has made me an appointment at his dentist for this Thursday, April 26th, to see if he can repair what's left. The gentleman is PAYING FOR IT for me because he knew me before I lost my teeth and he knows that I can no longer afford it. I am THANKING GOD for his kindness and generosity. I don't know if the dentist can salvage the rest, but I know that he does implants and bridges and ANYTHING is better than DENTURES. I already have porcelain crowns on my molars that I paid for myself before I realized what was happening.
I have talked to the best trial lawyer in Texas about what has happened to all of us who took OxyContin and/or Percocet (oxycodone and acetaminophen). He has been approached before about the subject, because he became a BILLIONAIRE on class-action suits for asbestosis. NO ONE is willing to take on Purdue Pharmaceuticals because the drug company did list "dry mouth" as a contraindication. He says that because that was listed, we have no legal remedy for the loss of our teeth. I have a college degree and I damned sure didn't know that "dry mouth" would result in losing the enamel off of my teeth, and then the crumbling thereafter. It makes me SICK to think that there are so many people like us, who DID NOT and DO NOT take street drugs. We were innocent pawns in a high-dollar business. My insurance paid for my Oxy's and it was $1100/month. Do you honestly think that Purdue would tell us that we were going to lose our teeth when they were dragging in MILLIONS every month in profit? They STILL don't tell you that long-term use of the drug will result in tooth loss!!!
All my life I had a PHOBIA about taking care of my smile! And we all have had the terrible dreams of losing out teeth, haven't we? I knew that as I aged, I would not retain my beauty queen looks and I didn't mind at all. I don't care about gaining 25 lbs., and I LOVE my naturally blonde hair that has turned platinum. (I save so much money on highlights - lol). The wrinkles don't phase me, either. BUT DON'T LET ME LOSE MY TEETH. I saved all my life so that I could take of myself in my golden years - it was all gone in 6 months and two surgeries, skin grafts, radiation, etc. I hate being POOR because if I had known I was going to die from this cancer anyway, I wouldn't have had the second surgery that literally bankrupted me. I would have cashed in my 401K and lived out the rest of my days on the French Riviera.
I knew that I had taken great care of my teeth with orthodontia work when I was 12, visits to the dentist every 6 months, etc. I knew that if worse came to worse, I could get implants with my savings. Well, now I can't!!
I used to date my endodontist and he has done all my root canals for nothing - God bless him also, for his generosity! Even HE didn't know about OxyContin. I have since told him and he said now he is seeing it on a weekly basis.
I hope that after I am gone that ALL of you who have suffered in silent humiliation for this awful malady, do EVENTUALLY find an attorney who will file a class-action suit on your behalf. And I pray that everyone will be as fortunate as I to have two wonderful friends who are helping me.
I will post my results at the dentist on Thursday night. I am cautiously optimistic and I'm scared to death to hear what I will most likely learn - that I will need dentures.
I am adding you to my prayers, sweet Ally! May God send you a miracle to repair your teeth, also.

i just want to let you know that just because you think some ppl are only using the drugs to get high and that they have brought this all n themselves you are dead fuc*ing wrong...sry for the language. I am a 30 yr old woman living in pain everyday of my life and at one time I did have a dr that put me on xanax ativan valium 80 oxy's not just 2 a day but 4-8 as i needed along with actiq lollipops and dilaudid 8mgs 1-2 every 4hrs I have been on these types of meds since the age of 5 1/2 to 6 yrs old due to horrible medical condidions that have sadly nearly killed me well let's just say i can't count that high on my two hands alone. .I am sooo not a fan of ppl who go and lie and get meds that they don't truly need other then to get high but there are some of us who have taken the most amazing care of themselves from day one and yeah after a stroke 1 month and 5 days after i had a miracle baby i was never supposed to have i suffered a massive stroke where i smashed the whole face onto a granite counter and went face first thru a mirrored door and that was when the real massive tooth decay and pain and rot really started i too thought it was total bulls*** that these meds could cause something like this but it it the truth no matter how you look at it. i had never in 24yrs not had my picture taken for the book at the dentists office for those who have been totally 100% cavity and any other dental problem free just think how embarassing it was to have to go in there and for him to tell me that i was going to have to have everything removed while put under due to my allergy to anything in the caine family meaning i feel everything no matter what even under twillight. that's just so freaking cruel of you to get on here to degrade, put down and make those of us with serious medical problems that WILL EVENTUALLY KILL us feel just so damn warm and fuzzy inside. you are a total jerk off and i think that many of the ppl on here will agree with me though i'm not not speaking on behalf of anyone other than myself and my best friend who's goooing through the same thing as so9 many ppl on here. You seriously should be ashamed of yourself and think twice before putting ppl down the way that you have. anyone with any thoughts advice etc can reach us on FB Alicia Kelly in Maryland B-more area

I was referred to a doctor for pain management. He did not inform me that m.s. contin would cause my teeth to rot above the gum line and fall out, which they did. I'am only 34 and before this happened, my teeth were beautiful. I'am seeking an attorney to help me file a lawsuit against this doctor, and the drug manufacturer that does not list drymouth as a side effect...what a cover up!Can anyone help me?

You need to get to a methadone clinic and fast. At first it is like switching one drug for another one. After you have been on methadone for a while you can request the clinic to begin to taper the dose down until you can get off. I don't think you want to get off. You feel sorry for yourself just like addicts do. Every one goes through pain. Some of us severe pain. And quit crying in front of your kids. Do you know how helpless and terrible that makes children feel? You are turning them into unhealthy emtionally sick people yourself!! Either get on suboxone and start going to NA or get on Methadone and start going to NA and quit being a victim. Nobody rotted your teeth out but you.

yep so its happening to you i think all of us who have suffered this damage should get a huge lawsuit going against the drug maker who made it, as i have found out online the drug maker of oxycotin they knew full well it would cause tooth loss yet they would deny it was damaging to teeth or that it would cause dry rot which is what it is, if they had just put warning labels on the meds then us patients could have had our doctors take precautions to make sure we where precribed a saliva increaser medication so that we would not get dry rot, so i think the drug company manufactor should be held responsible for restitution for us, by everyone who has suffered they should have to pay for the implants for us. so if theres any attorneys out there that put together a multi lawsuit against the maker of oxycontin contact me. and the rest of us on here who have suffered the same damage to our teeth. as i am sure everyone on here would want to get in a huge lawsuit against the makers of oxycontin for them not warning us patients that would cause dry rot of our teeth. we have lost our teeth, our pride, our looks, and our self esteem as not only can we no longer smile and be ourselves when we smile as we cant eat, i am on a liquid diet as i cant chew ever again. so i think the makers of this medication should be held fully responsible for not warning pateints and telling the doctors who prescibe that they need to make sure to prescribe to any patient taking it to put them on a saliva increaser med at the same time to protect that patient and others from developing dry mouth and dry rot of their teeth.

so if theres any lawyer or attorney firm that is gutsy enough to help us to get what we should have and that is to get our teeth back and to make the drug makers of oxycontin.
