Has anyone else known oxycontin to rot the teeth? I used to be on vicodin until my doctor told me I needed to switch to a morphine based meds. She put me on ms contin but I had problems with it so she put me on 80mg oxycontin. Eventually my body built up a tolerance so she kept raising it, i have am now on from 4-6 per day of the 80mg tabs. It scares me that this is what rotted my teeth because only 5 yrs ago i had only 2 cavities that needed filling and then only 1 yr after going on the oxycontin i had to have all my top front teeth pulled as they where rotting from the inside out the dentist said my mouth looked like a heroin addict's mouth looks. He said it was shocking to him that normally he only saw such damage from someone who abused drugs with so much dental damage, but i have never done any street drugs and have only take my meds as prescribed to me. Now i have lost 80% of my teeth and as a beautiful 41 yr old mother its devastating. I cant afford dentures and sure cant afford implants like i would like to have. I am a single mother and refuse to date because i have lost my teeth now, i had beautiful teeth before i started on the oxycontin and only 2 small cavities that needed filling. Does anyone else have this same problem and if so why hasn't the company making oxycontin warn patients of this possible problem?

If i had known this would cause me to lose most of my teeth i would have never agreed to go on it. Of course my family doctor who has been prescribing them tells me she hasn't heard of any other cases, yet when i researched the med online there where others like this why hasn't something been put in the warnings about this med, i sure would have preferred to have lived in pain the rest of my life rather than lose my teeth and be unable to even eat now. My health has gone downhill fast as i cant even chew foods necessary for good health. All I can eat now are yogurts, and liquid type of foods which isn't much. My kids are 7 and 9 yrs old and they watch me cry when we go out to eat and they order steak, and i can smell it but can't order one as i know i wont be able to chew it. This is so devastating for me. I want teeth so badly if i could wish for anything in life besides not to be poor anymore it would be to have a full set of real teeth or implants but i could never dream of having them, and i don't know anyone out there willing to just help me get any either. I have always helped others all my life, but cant even help myself, i have had to have 29 surgeries now since 1991 when a drunk driver hit my car and caused me major injuries with my lower back and knees, i have had a full lower back fusion and 8 arthroscopic knee surgeries until a year ago they finally had to do a full right knee replacement and now they are talking about doing my left knee soon.

So my life has been up and down with surgeries and i would go thru one more surgery just to have teeth implanted if i could. but i could never afford it, but i would like to know why these drug manufacturers are making a medication that could cause teeth to rot like this without warning us patients or even warning the doctors about it. This is just terrible of them i think, as now i am the one paying for this by having no teeth to eat with at such a young age now. I am a vibrant young 41 yr old at 5'3, 120lbs, slim woman, nice looking too as i was a model in my younger days, so i keep my looks up. But to have no teeth now... I never smile anymore, I am to ashamed to smile even though it wasn't my fault i lost my teeth. I think they should pay for me to have new teeth but no one wants to admit that the med causes it, but my diet wasn't the problem back when i started the medication and i wasn't drinking coca-cola either or doing street drugs so i know that wasn't the cause either. The only thing that changed within one year to cause this was starting the oxycontin medication. Well, if anyone out there can help me let me know thanks.

I am so glad I found this page. I too am having the same problem but about a year ago I started getting ulcers in my mouth and one of my doctors said it was from the lupus but did nothing to treat it. needless to say I still have that problem and it is pretty bad. I haven't been able to drink anything carbonated since this all started. I use to drink Mt. Dew and diet coke but haven't had one in over a year. I can only eat things like ketchup, mustard, anything spicy ever once in awhile when the ulcers aren't real bad but even then it still burns. About 6 months ago my teeth started breaking in half and the crown came completely off one. Of course it had to be my two front teeth that started breaking in half and the front ones on the bottom. My regular dentist wont take payments and I too am on disability now so I couldn't afford to go. I heard about the "Snap On Smile" and went to a dentist to see about getting that and one of the first things he said to me was..."are you still taking drugs?" I said excuse me! He said Meth, I said I have never taken meth nor would I ever take it and he just looked at me like yea right. He then told me I couldn't have the Snap On Smile and no ethical, true dentist wouldn't give me one! So because HE THOUGHT I was a meth head he wouldn't treat my dental problems. Has anyone else has problems with the ulcers? Good Luck to all!!!

Anyone that has any information on a lawsuit or class action suit please keep me informed ! I put my story on here . I am the mailman that hurt his back and had beautiful teeth until the pain medication oxycotin destroyed my teeth ! Maybe as a group we can try to get help with implants ! A lot of the time It's not the medication itself it is caused by dry mouth meds cause. I had great teeth to now mine look like a dope addicts to but I haven't ever did that stuff either just do what the doctor's give me. But ask a dentist dry mouth caused from the meds u take causes dry mouth I am disabled to and can't afford to get them pulled and at the least get immediate dentures, I would love to have implants to but I sure don't see it in my budget. I would be lucky to get dentures and can't do that now will have to wait my front tooth has broken off vertically and one on the bottom broke n half the rest are just crumbling away. I hate it for you but good luck I'm fixing to have my other knee replaced to I have been through about 14 surgeries.

Ms. I'm in the same boat that you are in losing teeth to oxycontin. The label only states dry mouth and my dentist gave me trays to do flouride treatment daily, he even gave me a spray for dry mouth and I still lost my teeth. Sorry to hear you are in the same situation. I'm in my forties and very attractive and can't afford dentures or implants.

I was reading the replies and noticed someone wrote oxycontin can cause you to lose your teeth. However the label only states oxycontin causes dry mouth. I'm not a dentist, so I wouldn't have known oxycontin will cause you to lose your teeth. I have lost all of my top teeth due to this medication.

Some of us had no choice ! I was a mailman and lifted weights and I was in the greatest shape of my life ! Then when I was walking on the grass to the next house I stepped into a hole and herniated 2 disc in neck 2 disc in between shoulders and the worst was my 3 bottom disc ! I was supposed to be on light duty but they made sure it wasn't what the doctor said and I ended up hurting it even worst than before ! I have been dealing with everyday pain even though I was on OxyContin 80 mg 3 pills twice a day plus breakthrough pain meds and don't forget anti depressants and muscle relaxers ! I have been in this pain from 1997 and still to this day because they will not approve procedures needed ! If I get the money from a loan and have procedure done and it don't work or gets worst i will stop getting paid ! So I try to do the best I can to get by and help my children and parents but in reality they help me ! So my teeth ended up being the last peice of dignity taken from me ! I only go to doctors appointments or to store for food at 7:00am trying not to run into anyone I know ! So to the lady who said (get over myself and don't take the drugs) . Try walking 1 day in my shoes ! I promise you one thing , you won't comment on something that you have know way of understanding ! Also you will prey to God that no one in your family has to live with this! That I would be sure off !!

Did you read my post? Brushing your teeth is useless on this medication. Oil pulling is your only hope. Biotene is garbage. I've used it. Buy Glee gum. It's all natural and doesn't have aspartame. The taste dosent last long. But all gun does that. Sleep with the gum in your mouth. Yes, I said sleep with it. Don't be worried about it coming out. Mine stays in my mouth. I just got in the mail today a product called XyliMelts. Small little discs that stick in your mouth for day or night use. If people want to ignore oil pulling, then you really must not want to help yourself. 20 minutes 3X/Day. It works. My decay have completely reversed itself.

Angelina, I sympathize with you. I too, have so many back issues that cause excruciating pain that to be able to get around and move, my doctor said the only option would be oxycontin. I just recently heard of the teeth issue with this med, so brushing and rinsing my teeth and mouth with Biotene made for dry mouth. I have also upped my calcium intake to 1200 mg a day. People, do oil pulling, I'm dead serious. I have literally reversed decay in 2 weeks on my front teeth. My teeth are whiter. I feel healthier. I'm not worrying about my teeth like I was 2 weeks ago. Granted this will not bring your missing teeth back. But this is a cure from Gid in my opinion. A cure that works. A cure that has been suppressed and now I know why. Stop reading this and go but some sunflower oil, lol.

I saw the news story and cried... this is what I am going through as well. You are not alone. I was never warned. I even recently sent my doctor an email asking her why this was happening after my dentist told me it was most likely from the meds. The pharmacy paperwork that kaiser gives out for each med also never has stated dental issues (I just rechecked). I saw the dentist in July for some major work done and was supposed to get more but money was an issue, and now half a year later, I can easily see/feel holes in every tooth. I am 32 years old, single and doubt I will ever date again because my mouth looks like a heroine addicts... I don't know what to do... I have been very close to getting them all pulled and dentures made, but I can't afford those either. If only I had known.... I don't know if I would have not taken them, it was legit reasons, and still is, but I would try for something else or less time etc. I am angry and upset

I hope everyone that has fallen victim due to pain medication and has unfortunately had there teeth ruined as I have sees this post in time. I now have no teeth of my own due to the morphine. My story is pretty long and horrible. But my situation will be on the channel 4 news tonight Thursday the 31st at 11 California time. After it airs it will also be on the channel 4 news website. I will not give up on this. please reply with a post if you have any questions.

I'm not familiar with class action lawsuits. I know we could claim costs associated with lawyers. If we get enough people, I'm sure there would be someone willing to help pay. As I'm broke right now :(

This is very serious situwation and I'm glad I'm not alone. Wrecking our personal appearance is beyond acceptable and downright criminal. We are the victims here. We are in pain. And we trusted this medication. Granted there are side effects to most drugs. But not this bad to destroy our teeth so we all look like meth addicts. I want to be positive and say we could win this, but I doubt it. I'm just talking reality here. We don't have high paid lawyers like these company's do. By no means am I waving the white flag, far from that. But in the meantime we need to try and stop the tooth decay. Call it God's will, I dunno, but in the last few days I have found a way in we might be able to heal our mouths. Not sure if I read it on here or not, but its called oil pulling. Maybe you have heard of it. It involved swishing oil, usually sunflower or sesame oil in the mouth for 20 minutes. At first I thought this was crazy. Then one by one I read people's experiences with it and I was amazed by their results. But I'm not giving up. Loosing our teeth is a form of abuse against us. It mentally messes us up. As you said, loss of employment is a big, big thing. Who's going to hire someone who looks like a meth head? When in fact they are not. And by no means of their own did they cause it. It does list dry mouth as a side effect so I think that means we are probably out of luck. I do have dental coverage, not lots. But I'm getting off these as soon as I can. I'm in pain, so it's a double standard. But losing my teeth is not something I'm going to accept nor should anyone else.

I have been on oxycontin 80mg. once a day, and 40mg. twice a day for about 10 years for fibromyalgia and I used to have gorgeous teeth. I went to an oral surgeon / then a dentist for implants and after being told by their mgr. that my ins. covered $10,000.00, needless to say it only covered a partial, so I have 4 screws on top after a few bone grafts for almost a year now because I don't have the $3800.00 for the balance. I would be interested in a class action lawsuit, but I would like more information on this type of suit. Would we have to pay a lawyer up front? My email is: {edited for privacy}. My roommate was taking oxycontin for about 5 years till she lost her health insurance and is having exactly the same problem. She is now with a tooth coming out every two months or so. Neither one of us is working because we know no one will hire us with our mouths like they are. I am glad that it's not in our minds. We literally have teeth going from beautiful to rotten in a few months. Look forward to hearing from you.

You know what? I'm not going to get into my exact situwation. But I'm having the same problem with Oxycodone. It's rotting my teeth. I was never warned of this side effect. It's been a nightmare for me. And I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I think a class action lawsuit should be looked at here. Make them pay to fix our teeth. I do live in Canada. Hello Angela. If your still able to see this post.as it has been a few years I would like to see how things are now? I'm thinking something helped you by now I hope. I too went through the Exact things as you did. I am a single mother and am in my 30'S but have no teeth in my mouth due to the mediation and it has destroyed my life and who I once was a beautiful person. I really hope to hear back from you ASAP.
