Oxycontin Damaged My Teeth (Page 26)

Has anyone else known oxycontin to rot the teeth? I used to be on vicodin until my doctor told me I needed to switch to a morphine based meds. She put me on ms contin but I had problems with it so she put me on 80mg oxycontin. Eventually my body built up a tolerance so she kept raising it, i have am now on from 4-6 per day of the 80mg tabs. It scares me that this is what rotted my teeth because only 5 yrs ago i had only 2 cavities that needed filling and then only 1 yr after going on the oxycontin i had to have all my top front teeth pulled as they where rotting from the inside out the dentist said my mouth looked like a heroin addict's mouth looks. He said it was shocking to him that normally he only saw such damage from someone who abused drugs with so much dental damage, but i have never done any street drugs and have only take my meds as prescribed to me. Now i have lost 80% of my teeth and as a beautiful 41 yr old mother its devastating. I cant afford dentures and sure cant afford implants like i would like to have. I am a single mother and refuse to date because i have lost my teeth now, i had beautiful teeth before i started on the oxycontin and only 2 small cavities that needed filling. Does anyone else have this same problem and if so why hasn't the company making oxycontin warn patients of this possible problem?

If i had known this would cause me to lose most of my teeth i would have never agreed to go on it. Of course my family doctor who has been prescribing them tells me she hasn't heard of any other cases, yet when i researched the med online there where others like this why hasn't something been put in the warnings about this med, i sure would have preferred to have lived in pain the rest of my life rather than lose my teeth and be unable to even eat now. My health has gone downhill fast as i cant even chew foods necessary for good health. All I can eat now are yogurts, and liquid type of foods which isn't much. My kids are 7 and 9 yrs old and they watch me cry when we go out to eat and they order steak, and i can smell it but can't order one as i know i wont be able to chew it. This is so devastating for me. I want teeth so badly if i could wish for anything in life besides not to be poor anymore it would be to have a full set of real teeth or implants but i could never dream of having them, and i don't know anyone out there willing to just help me get any either. I have always helped others all my life, but cant even help myself, i have had to have 29 surgeries now since 1991 when a drunk driver hit my car and caused me major injuries with my lower back and knees, i have had a full lower back fusion and 8 arthroscopic knee surgeries until a year ago they finally had to do a full right knee replacement and now they are talking about doing my left knee soon.

So my life has been up and down with surgeries and i would go thru one more surgery just to have teeth implanted if i could. but i could never afford it, but i would like to know why these drug manufacturers are making a medication that could cause teeth to rot like this without warning us patients or even warning the doctors about it. This is just terrible of them i think, as now i am the one paying for this by having no teeth to eat with at such a young age now. I am a vibrant young 41 yr old at 5'3, 120lbs, slim woman, nice looking too as i was a model in my younger days, so i keep my looks up. But to have no teeth now... I never smile anymore, I am to ashamed to smile even though it wasn't my fault i lost my teeth. I think they should pay for me to have new teeth but no one wants to admit that the med causes it, but my diet wasn't the problem back when i started the medication and i wasn't drinking coca-cola either or doing street drugs so i know that wasn't the cause either. The only thing that changed within one year to cause this was starting the oxycontin medication. Well, if anyone out there can help me let me know thanks.

I am so very happy right now and glad, too, that i just happened to check my email inbox before trying to get some sleep. I actually have the biggest smile on my face, but only because I'm alone and no one can see my teeth ... LOL... In any case and like my earlier post said, I will volunteer to be the single point of contact, to which Medschat has so generously allowed some leniency of their policy so we can all come together, get organized, and get a plan in place in order to achieve our common goal!!! :-D ... So, let me get with this site to find out what they need from me and how to proceed from here so I can share my contact information with y'all, okay? Sorry.... Getting very sleepy now, but I'll get back to y'all as soon as i have more information. And, again, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH, MEDSCHAT, for listening to our stories, our pain, and our only wish.... To be able to smile again, even when it seems like we don't have a whole lot to smile about. Good night and God bless you all! Christine

Hi mailman, like many of us here i see you suffer from spinal pain too, the teeth situation is also a massive problem brought to us all thanks to the pharmacutical companies who make oxycontin.
If you read the comment left by the Admin team, you can give permission to them for your email address to be passed to christine.

I would like to get involved also but like stated by many I don't know how ! If someone figures this out please let me know . Maybe It would help me to socialize and have some life even with major back pain it's my teeth that is part of be comeing a shut in stay home person ! I feel all of your pain and my own too ! Good luck to all ! We deserve to have teeth and the meds oxycotin has taken my dignity away ! I don't want people to feel sorry for me because that is the worst ! I can conceal my pain but not my teeth !

Dear Admin, Thank you so much for supporting us through this traumatic time. I am very grateful that you will allow us to make contact and hopefully get this issue resolved. I hereby give you permission to give Christine my email address. I will keep posting here to keep you updated.

Medschat.com please allow christine to show her email so we can get together as a group to try to fight these companies. All of us have lost so much health wise and its a lot to have to live with. Pharmacutical companies should not be allowed to get away with destroying lives. I am appealling to your sense of decency, please allow us to exchange email addresses.

If you can think of a way we can all get our heads together im all for it. Im in the UK tho im sure most others are in USA. I dont see why theses pharmacutical companies should get away with damaging our health.

I have been on oxycontin for a few years due to a spinal injury. Over the last year my dentist has noticed my teeth have gone from having no cavities to needing almost a full set of top dentures. My teeth are weak and chip or crumble and i have lots of little cavities despite my 3 times a day brushing. I have spoken with my GP as well as a hospital pharmacist who have said oxycontin is to blame.

Justine I know how you feel I am in the same boat I went thru 9 brain surgeries a I was just involved in a bad car accident where I was sitting at a red light and a lady plowed into the back of my car because she did not see me or the light cause she was busy texting, the attorney that I would like to use to go after big pharm just lost his Mother and I am waiting for him to return but I suggest anyone who would like to be involved in this go ahead and give me your email so we can have direct communication and the more of us their are the better off we are but do keep in mind that these big pharmaceutical companies have a lot of money and a lot of attorneys so nothing will happen overnight but if there are enough of us together maybe they will do what is right and fix our teeth to shut us up and that is what I would like is to have my great smile back before all of this has happened to me and I am sure others are looking to get rich off of something like this, I don't know which group you fall into but I think the 1st thing to do is to come up with a great petition on change.org and get a lot of signatures, I don't know if you are a member on there, but it is a great petition site that has gotten many things done and I am talking issues that you have seen on national news, so if you have not checked them out please do, and once we have a well written petition that is something that the attorney can use and a lot of times companies just respond to the petition and make things right because they don't want the bad press so any research like what other medications these companies make and these other medications can people get them from another company because if so the one thing no company likes is to lose money and that is the only thing they care about is the all mighty dollar and what worries me is if these medications have hurt our teeth what have they done to our bones? Now I have heard that tooth damage occurred because the medication dried our mouths out but I know for a fact I never got dry mouth from the meds I was taking. well thats enough from me at the moment but please anybody who has ideas about what should go into the petition please let me know because it seems there are a lot of complaints and no one wants to see it thru and they get discouraged the 1st time they hear no but I am used to it from my brain surgeries because the insurance only wanted to pay for 1 hospital and I met with a lot of neurosurgeons before I found one I liked but he was a few states away so I had to find a way and I did even though there were times I wanted to toss my hands in the air and call it quits but I fought and fought hard on my own so the more people who are with me the better. I hope a lot of you want to get involved and we can through our thoughts around because we will have to get it done and until I fully trust any attorney we only have each other and remember 99.9% of the attorneys are in it for the money which is why most of them became an attorney cause it is hard to find one who actually cares about us but there are a few out there and I will do everything I can to find him but lets start out with people because as they say united we stand(and eat steak) divided we fall.

If you go back and read some of my earlier posts, that's exactly what I was trying to do (legal case suit). However, this site does not allow posters to exchange private contact information. That being said, I'd be open to any other suggestion you might have.

Ok.... Snausages, you're the one who has spoken to a lawyer that actually thinks we might win a case suit. We will have to work together to make this work so PLEASE participate!

I had one of my teeth break the rest of the way off today while I was eating a sandwich. Now I have a stub and it's really freaking me out. Being on disability there is absolutely nothing I can do about my teeth breaking and falling out unless I win the lottery. I have many others that are rotting from the inside. I would really really like to get going on a case suit so I can get my teeth fixed!

Thanks everyone.

I have been told by a few attorneys that if enough of us get together to form a class action lawsuit it can be done because I have the same problems with my teeth and no Dr, pharmacist or any of the papers I have been given say anything about damage to the teeth may occour

Dear Stephan O., Sure would like to know what you meant by, "... always an excuse..."

damn lady.. always an excuse? your right about the teeth rot. I notice my teeth rotting about six months ago. Just waiting for the opportunity that I could afford to have some work done. I take Roxicontin - 15 mg 3 times a day and time release Oxycontin - 30 mg 2 times a day. When I do not have pain medications... I desperately go to the streets looking for relief!

September 1st 2009 at 6:30 am I had a tumor removed from "inside" my "Spinal Cord". The tumor had enlarged at such a rate before it was found... ok Imagine you have a blob of fat "inside the spinal cord" growing... growing.. and growing... When I lifted a ladder off my van at work.... to work on someones phone... "work for at&t as an 1) service tech and 2) lineman..... it sounded like a water balloon exploding... The Tumor grew so large that it actually had busted out of the "SPINAL CORD" and when I was cut open he found out that it literally wrapped around the external part of the spinal cord seven (7) times. I was on the table for eight (8) total hours.... when I woke up out of "ANESTHESIA" my mother heard me from the ICU room all the way through ""SIX (6) double doors" in the "WAITING ROOM". The nurse immediately put me back to sleep after they saw I could move my toes and fingers. They had to keep me on heavy drugs for the first 6 days.... SO HEAVY that they had to use a "synthetic drug"... morphine would not help the pain damn near at all.... and the amount that would help was close to lethal.

Justine! Thank you SO much for your input. Good to get. I have had some spinal injections at the S1-L5 level and that stung SO badly I didn't go back for the rest of the series. So, I'm a bit worried about the stimulator causing irritation rather than alleviating pain. I tried the STIM pack (against the skin) years ago which did nothing for the pain, but I know the concept is different than the implant.

Good tip on the lidocain. I used to get the Lidocain patches (which never stuck to my skin), but my insurance never covered it and I'm sure the manufacturer just got tired of sending me free ones. All my insurance and drug plan is changing so I'll have to look into what I can get covered. It's so confusing and I'm not looking forward to dealing with it.

Good to know one or the other should work. I wish the morphine pump implant manufacturer/rep (or whatever) would do a trial also. I'm not looking forward to having my skin ripped open. Trepidation has already set in for me in preparation for another surgery I was supposed to have had already this month. Just waiting for the slow wheels of my coverage to get moving plus still waiting for my dumb body to get over the bug I picked up that keeps turning over and over collecting symptoms as it snowballs down a hill accumulating more prescriptions. I hate that!

Has being on the pump helped in other areas related to drug side affects?? I had to take oral morphine for a time when I could not get my Fentanyl covered and it really messed with my weight. Other medications I've had to take for dental work or anxiety (like a plane trip) were not very effective anymore. Also, I sort of started to develop a bit of an allergy or reaction when I took the oral morphine that I absolutely do not have with the fentanyl patches. Mostly, I had a very mild reaction comparatively—just nasal congestion. I wonder how the body reacts differently to the different forms/delivery systems of the same medications.

I will speak to my doctor about those two options. He's an older doctor and not too terribly adventurous when it comes to treatment, but he'd probably be up for finding something that uses LESS medication and something that's covered. I've done a lot of research on medications I qualified for, for free, and he's been very gracious on his part in filling out forms. Of course, I do get charged for some of those dumb forms to get filled out. Darn it!

Anyway, thanks a heap for the input. Glad something worked for you!

Guitargirl-
I did the spinal chord stimulator trial before I did the trial for the intrathecal pain pump. I too was hopeful that there was a medication free option that may work but found the stimulator to actually increase my pain. But don't lose hope, the information that I've read says that typically one of the two options will work it really just depends on the person. My doctor told me that usually if one doesn't work for someone the other does. I would encourage you to absolutely do the stimulator trial When you have the opportunity to. Having RSD I know that anything that has the potential to work (especially without meds!) Is worth a shot. You may also talk to your primary care physician about lidocaine infusions. Before I had the pump implanted I was receiving IV lidocaine infusions every 2 weeks because at that point the pumps were not covered by my insurance. They weren't as effective as the pump but they did help my pain tremendously. If you have any more questions I would be more than happy to answer them.
Hope you have a happy end to 2013 :)
