What's the diffrence if your're in pain or not? YOU should have the right to put whatever you want in your OWN body. As long as you don't harm anyone because of it(theft to support habbit, violence, drive a car, be responsible for children, etc...) then you should have the righ to injest anything that makes you feel how you want. I have to laugh at the people that are in pain, talking down to the "druggies". Guess what? You are druggies too! Everyone is. Beer = drug, cigarette = drug, coffee = drug, redbull = drug. Almost everyone takes drugs, it's funny to me that some people have to rationalize their habit, wheather in pain or not, and to look down on others who take another substance or take it for pleasure. You are truly mental midgets.

If you were taking 2 OC 60s a day that means that the drug would be released into your blood stream over the course of 12 hours. The Oxycodone is instant release so the are not exactly appels to appels. I would take 30 mg Oxycodone in the AM, then 4-6 hours later take another 30 mg and repeat throughout the day. That way you are mimicing the release as best as possible as well as maintaing the same dose per day.

I fortunately have excellent coverabe for all my medications and medical care through my husband's employer.

I suffer from severe pain from several severe medical problems. I am NOT someone looking for a high and am highly resistant to pain medications and even anesthesia when having surgery.

I was on oxycontin, 30 mg 3x daily and percocet for breakthrough pain. The new formulation of oxycontin made my stomach sick and barely helped my pain.

I was changed to different medications by my Pain Management/Anesthesiologist until he found a replacement that helps somewhat better. Cost of one was $1200, what I am now is $ 500 each.

Contact the manufacturer of any medication you truly can't afford. If your income is low enough they will help, some of them anyway.

Best of Health and Good Luck!

I am severely allergic to the open. Big blisters all over me. I start swelling everywhere n more. What ever they put in the op is horrible. I'm no druggie. Just would prefer to not have to go through all that when the oc kind made my life liveable n I didn't have allergic reactions to it

i understand you completely in canada they never should have changed them i believe its because their patent was running out. an elderly lady died because the oxyneo got caught in her throat and swelled and and blocked her airway.all they did for me was give me stomach problems and i lost 30lbs in 8 weeks from the vomiting and i noticed if i let the pill sit in the vomit it would make my pan black! they put polymer and other non consumable products as fillers and only half the active ing. maybe if we all banded together the PATIENTS THAT NEED IT TO FUNCTION INSTEAD OF DOING WHATS BEST FOR THE ADDICT THE ADDICT WILL ALWAYS BE AN ADDICT TO SOMETHING AS LONG AS THEY CHOOSE TO USE there are programs for them but us the patient are not considered!!! we should all sign a petition aand send it to our govs and purdue pharma!!!!!

Re # 63 @The Milkman: (Thursday, 2/28/2013 5:36:46 PM)
----------------------------------------------

The Milkman, it DOES matter if you take these medications if not in pain. The reason Purdue Pharma HAD to change oxycontin was because of the people you speak of (or yourself if that's what you meant!) What's happened in my neck of the woods is some of those addicted w/o pain have gone over to HEROIN!!! Many are dying, 35x the amount of last year where I live. So they made a bust today of $100k and 50,000 glassines of heroin and that's the tip of the iceburg.

So if you think there are no ramifications for that type of action you're wrong.

For my severe, true pain I am now on 60mg of MSContin BID and Roxicodone 30mg QID and I would never sell or give my medication to anyone as implied by another poster. "I" need it for my pain and it far from fully eliminates it but it does take the edge off. "I" have to go through twice a year urine, drug testing by my pain mgt/anesthesiologist physician to cover his behind with the FDA. They need to be sure us even us "REAL pain patients" are taking our medication and not selling it all or part of it. He knows my pain is legit by MRI's CT scans etc and that I take it as prescribed but if the FDA knocks on his door, he has to show them that he tests all of his patients.

So ALL of us are affected by these new laws created by the drug addicts/Dr.shoppers and even some MD's.) The ones that made a fortune up until a cpl of years back that I could care less about. They're drug dealers that lost a huge source of income. Poor babies, all of you!

So yes, it is ALL of our business and there is a difference if you're in pain or not The Milkman! YOU and your buddies caused those of us suffering, MUCH more urine testing (as most docs test more than twice a year) additional problems, oxycontin that doesn't help pain as well and the M.D.'s additional work.

You're the mental midget. Thanks buddy! NOT!

I have to agree with you 150%. My pain dr retired and my regular dr took over until the last few months because of some board that has to do with obamacare stepped in and told my dr he could only write prescribtions for only one of my medications not both boy was I pissed!! I'm currently taking oxycontin 80mg 3xday, and fentanyl 75 mcg every three days. Found a pain dr that took me on. But the point is the government has no business interfering in my medical ir anything else. I agree and feel the same way you do. I have real pain problems with brain, had brain surgery, 3 neck surgeries w/ plates and screws, back several disk herniated. I would never sell my stuff either I would be screwed. I have had people ask, always tell them no, I keep my meds locked up And every 3 days take enuff for the next three days. Out of all this I hate the way some of these dr make you feel, pharmacists etc, they act like your a druggie. And I don't appreciate it. I mean omg its all regulated and you call tell by looking up your name. Even my insurance co gives me a hard time. They figure it on a monthly dosage and there is no lee way at all. If my patch gets messed up of when I showers. You have no room for adjusting. You take one more and your screwed. I get it that they are trying to keep people that are the druggies away from it. But damn it do they have to make it so tough in us that really need it. We think we have it bad now, I so scared when I think about what else is go an happen with obamacare is 100% in affect. I start crying honest because I'm so afraid on what else they will do. I have been on Medicare disability for over 10 years. I'm 59 now, and I hear things on what their gonn do to our age group, it is enuff to make you cry. It's evident thru want to kill grandma. If you think they won't, remember the 11 yr old this past week where it took a court to order HHS to put her on the Adult list, because sibilius (speeding sorry) and she runs it all said no. Think about it she has the power to put this 11 yr old on the adult list for transplants and said NO!!! The court made her!! For those that thought obamacare would be great but at what price ?? Your freedom??? Your life ?? You had all better quit saying how great it is and start opening your eyes and do
Your own research. Pretty bad when the younger people don't even know
Who our Vice President is ?? If you missed that poll it was unbelievable. So for those that don't know what's goin in shut up and get your facts straight !! And it if you voted for him you are to bland as well. The ones that want all these damn freebies and feel everyone should pay their way in life. You know what their called? Leeches!! For those that keep b****ing out the rich. Their the ones that employ people you fools. To sum this all up when you start feelin that everyone should pay for your birth control that puts the icing on the cake.. So the Americans have become fat and lazy ? The government lives it their Goal is to control everyone. A lot of people cannt see it., don't want to see it. Americans used to take pride in themselves, they knew that they were responsible for achieve ya or not was in their hands, they ran their own life. As of 2012 our president at Any and all cost played, behave so underhandedly he did not win fairly by a long shot. Look at all the scandals goin on now, democrats, media, Obama and his team, covered, lied. The dorms knew they would all lose. President has surrounded himself with people that will lie, cover him at any cost. So when the law or constitution is not followed or laws broke there is no one that makes that office accountable. When your own supreme justice rewrites verbiage with the obamacare came before them so they could pass it. We are in big trouble our checks and balances or more like lie, cover, act dumb. The best one have the attorney general investigate himself? I'm rolling with laughter. Like I said we have no one! The election should be redone, isn't that what us do?
This all has to do with obamacare they will not be out covering everyone , they already said that lately. Then to rob rMedicare ? For obamacare ? You got to know they won't looking out for our best interest. (Strange they don't mention how much is owed to that program, we paid into ) but they are taking more?
There will be dr shortages, and that's because their quitting. Do those of us that have a dr, what are they going to do to us then. We are not asking for miracle with our health, we just want to be as comfortable as possible. But even now their intruding. How do we turn things around? Sorry I started typing, started crying again,'just writing about it upsets all over again, and scared what ate they not gonna do? My grandchildren? When do we get someone in office that really care, morally, ethically, instead if longing their picked, and who had power. I don't know how, but those of us that have to rely on pAin medication, I wish there was a qAy we could get everyone on board. So sorry for going on and on, but crap people were in big trouble. HELP have everyone list problems.
Master list would be good that would help people understand what the problems are. Lot of people don't know. Perhaps if things were listed simple easy to understand to get people to starts involving themselves. Other problem with election alot of people really don't know. You get caught up in day to day living, your not touched by politics. Ok I'm done sorry. I could write a book. Lol

To "kt in legit pain": I'm 61 years old and also have fibromyalgia. I've been on Oxycontin for about 12 years, along with trying various meds (one at a time!) for breakthrough pain. You are absolutely right about the abusers making the life of legitimate pain patients so much more difficult. I have a great doctor now who knows me well but I've lived in 4 different places since I was diagnosed 20 years ago and the worst part of moving was trying to find a doctor and pharmacist who didn't treat me like I was an abuser/addict just because I needed strong pain medication. This is a direct result of the widespread misuse of these drugs by people manipulating them just to get high. As for Purdue Pharma fighting to get the OC formulation of Oxycontin returned to the market, don't hold your breath, for a number of reasons! First, Purdue's patent on the OP version runs until 2025 so they can keep charging an artificially high price for their Oxycontin at least until then. Second, the FDA just ruled that the generic OC version, which could be manufactured by other companies and thus produce competition and lower prices, is NOT going to be allowed back on the market. Other companies even have to develop their own version of the tamper-resistant form (OP) first before they can market it AFTER 2025. Even though feedback from pain patients is that the new formulation isn't as effective, takes much longer to work (which is true!), and has additional side effects, you must always remember that the FDA isn't thinking of the pain patient but of the addicts and abusers. Their line is that they can't let the original formulation back on the market because of it's abuse potential, overlooking the fact that the Internet is flooded with information from addicts who are already sharing the ways they've figured out to get around the anti-abuse features. Again, the FDA's decision is fine with Purdue-Pharma; it gives them at least another 12 years of being the exclusive producers of the very expensive Oxycontin. After that, they'll probably do what they've done in the past--"tweak" the formula so they can claim they've produced a "new" Oxycontin on which they'll hold the patent until some time far, far in the future...and on and on it goes. We must remember that there are at least three basic principles which govern the production of this important tool of pain relief for suffering people. One, as far as the FDA is concerned, the addict/abuser's well-being comes before that of the pain patient in agony. Two, the FDA apparently believes that ANYONE who takes Oxycontin is an abuser/addict. For them, there is no differentiation between law-abiding users who follow the directions on a legitimate prescription and the abuser/addicts. Suffering patients are also "bad", must be saved from themselves, and are guilty until they can prove their innocence. This assumption extends to insurance companies, pharmacists and SOME doctors. And, three, as far as the manufacturer is concerned, money and greed are always the most important determinate factors in their decisions.

Taking the real hit for all this arrogance, politics, and greed is the chronic pain patient who suffers daily agony and whose life has deteriorated as a result. Insurance companies will start to refuse to pay for the more expensive Oxycontin and they, rather than your doctor, will be the one deciding what medication and/or how much of it is necessary to control your pain. In my own experience, this is already happening. I had been taking 6 - 40 mg Oxycontin per day for the last several years with no increases. (That's 240 mg per day.) My insurance company has now decided that (with THEIR special prior authorization, of course) that they won't pay for this--but they WILL pay for 4 - 60 mg Oxycontin or 3 - 80 mg Oxycontin. Those scenarios are also 240 mg per day. Neither controls my pain as well as using the 40's; I must either take too many mg at one time or not enough, given my pain pattern throughout the day. The difference is not in the number of mg/per day but in the number of pills. There are two possible reasons for this. One is that they are paying a certain amount per pill so fewer pills equals lower cost; they're not concerned about the effectiveness of the actual pain control. The second reason, I can only assume, is that they figure if I have 6 pills, I probably only need 3 and I can sell the other 3. If I only have 4 pills (60's) or 3 pills (80's), that's leaves fewer pills for me to sell. Of course, I'm not selling them nor have I ever done so--again, the abuser/addicts behaviors are controlling my medical treatment.

To Mr. Chemist:

It's nice of you to provide some information but the way this is written makes it hard to take it seriously. Good grief! It's I'd, not Id; uninformed, not uniformed; Purdue, not predue or perdue; formula, not formala or forumula; system, not stylem; simply, not simple; FDA, not fda; won't, not wont; can't, not cant; an anti-abuse, not a antiabuse; I, not i; you people, not myoupeople. "...no matter what bull**** you here" should have a verb between "you" and "here" (like "write") and "get patent" should be "get a patent". I've probably missed some. This doesn't even begin to address the lack of punctuation (correct or otherwise) and lack of capital letters at the beginning of sentences. You say you work for Purdue (although you used two different spellings of the company name, both incorrect). I can only hope your job is one that doesn't require competence in writing the English language.

After reading some of the posts regarding the topic of the original formulation of Oxycontin, I realized there is quite a bit of misunderstanding about how and why Purdue Pharma changed its formulation, what the loss of patent means, and whether or not they will be returning to the original formulation. Also, the question rises as to whether or not any of the generic medication companies will produce the original OC formulation to put back into the market. I would like to help clarify some of these questions by providing the following information which I have researched as both a Registered Nurse and personal chronic pain patient resulting from failed back surgery.

1. Purdue Pharma changed its original long acting formulation (the OC) at the request of the FDA due to the overwhelming widespread abuse of the medication simply by removing the outer covering. They achieved the reformulation by incorporating the controlled release mechanism into the tablet rather than just coating the tablet. The unfortunate effect of this action was first and foremost the loss of effectiveness of a medication that had worked wonderfully for many patients with chronic pain. Another unfortunate effect of this new formulation was the development of various gastrointestinal medical issues occurring in patients taking the new OP formulation. I developed gastritis from the OP formulation, which caused severe nausea and the lining of my stomach to bleed. My MD chose to switch me over to Opana (another oxy-based medication) that has worked very well at a third of the dose as compared to the Oxycontin. Purdue Pharma has received and documented many complaints and concerns in regards to the OP formulation. If you or someone you know is taking or has taken the OP formulation and suffered any adverse effects I strongly suggest you contact Purdue and have it documented by the company's quality control division. You never know...maybe with enough of these types of concerns on record the government will allow a return to the OC formulation.

2. Purdue Pharma Canada did not initially follow the US in changing the formulation, but did so within a year of the change in the US. Purdue Canada also received many concerns and complaints of various medical problems associated with the OP formulation and decided to go back to the original formulation (OC) to improve patient safety and effectiveness. With this knowledge, many states along the northern border with Canada have passed laws making it illegal to get your medication in Canada and bring it back across the border.

3. Noticing many questions about the meaning of the loss of Purdue's patent on Oxycontin, I hope this will clarify what exactly that means. It is not the loss of a patent, but rather the patent expired, thus allowing companies making generic brands of medication to make Oxycontin under its generic name of oxycodone hydrochloride controlled or extended release. Just prior to the expiration of Purdue's patent on Oxycontin, our congress passed a law preventing any companies making generic medication from making the original OC formulation. Meaning that all medication companies in the US could only produce the OP formulation.

4. At this time, Purdue Pharma-USA has indicated to me via telephone conversation that they do not have any plans or timelines of returning to the original OC formulation. As the incidents of heroin use, abuse, and overdose resulting in death are on the rise as more and more people replace the oxycontin use with the use of heroin, hopefully our government will see the need to allow the reproduction of the original OC formulation. If someone is going to use or abuse any substance, I would rather it be sourced from a reputable company than depend on something obtained on the street with no idea of how its made or what exactly it contains.

Although I agree that the abuse of oxycontin for the sole purpose of getting a "high" has made it much more difficult for chronic pain patients to get the treatment they need to maintain a tolerable quality of life; I also realize that the people abusing such substances are self medicating for another problem...I would rather they do this safely, with a known substance, than with something simply picked up on the street containing any number of unknown lethal substances.

I hope this has clarifies some of the questions and concerns regarding what is going on with Purdue Pharma and the Oxycontin issue.

Nothing you do can or will "speed up the process" to bring about a return of the original formulation of OxyContin. The FDA has banned the original formulation because it is easily abused. Purdue Pharma, the company that manufactures OxyContin, has no intention of returning to the version of OxyContin that was not abuse-deterrent. For the many people who state that the original formulation of OxContin was more effective than the currently marketed OxyContin OP: Purdue Pharma has completed a number of studies. The two drugs are bioequivalent, meaning that the old and new versions both deliver the same amount of oxycodone at the same rate. I would suspect that, in many cases, the people who claim OxyContin OP does not work as well do not like the fact that the OP formulation can't be easily crushed and abused. Again, the company has done studies that are documented in the official prescribing information of the new OxyContin OP product. No difference in the amount of oxycodone or its rate of absorbtion.

To answer your question, Justin, your spelling is extremely poor which, I suspect, (and hope!) is deliberate, presumably designed to be irritating. (It's not irritating--it's hilarious!) And to clarify--my problem is not with the occasional spelling/grammatical/etc. mistake; we all make those. However, sometimes there are so many errors in a posting that it's difficult to tell what the contributor is trying to communicate, as was also stated by another person in an earlier reply. The point is encourage people to make sure that anything which they have to say is clear. It's a shame when potentially helpful contributions are clouded because of an abundance of spelling and other format errors. You keep working on that spelling--I'm sure you can do better!:-)

Hi, Kevn529! No doubt, as you stated, there are plenty of abusers who would prefer a formulation of oxycontin that is easier to abuse. Whether that is the majority of complainants is, of course, impossible to determine. I have a disease of the central nervous system which has caused me chronic, intense, body-wide pain for over 20 years. I have taken oxycontin for the last 14 years under the supervision of a physician, always adhering strictly to the terms of the agreement which a patient such as myself must sign for their medical file when taking this type of medication about how they will obtain it and use it and the consequences if they don't. I am not one of the people you mentioned who don't like the new OP formulation because it can't be as easily crushed, shot up or otherwise used in ways other than as intended. I'm sharing this personal information to make it clear that I have used oxycontin appropriately for the entire 14 years I've taken it and I'm speaking from that perspective and length of experience. While I find that eventually the OP does work as well as the OC, I've also noticed that, for me, it does take longer to take effect. I wake between 4:00 and 5:00 each morning in tremendous pain and must immediately take an oxycontin. When I was using the OC formulation, I used to call the period of time spent waiting for it to work my "hour from hell". Now, with the OP formulation, it's my hour-and-a-half to two hours from hell! I've spoken with a couple other pain patients who have noticed a similar issue. So while Purdue's studies may be correct in terms of this medication's EVENTUAL helpfulness, there is some difference which causes it to work less quickly. When you're in agony, that extra hour seems really long and adds up to a lot of extra suffering. And just a little P.S. to Purdue and the FDA--you may not have noticed this but drug abusers seem to be very creative about getting around your "safeguards"! The Internet is loaded with "helpful hints" being exchanged by addicts about this. I wish the FDA and Purdue were half as concerned about how their decisions affect the law-abiding, legitimate, suffering pain patients who DON'T abuse this medication as they are about tailoring their laws and medications for the presumed welfare of those who seem bound and determined to break the laws and misuse the drugs!

To all the people who say that the new formulation is a poor substitute for the original, kudos to you. I have been a chronic pain patient for going on 22 years, up to and until they changed the pills I was able to maintain a fairly normal life. Now I can't work, partially because my body isn't cooperating partly because my dr.s won't allow it. I have changed over to MS Contin for long term and 30 mg roxicodine for instant. The 30 mg roxicodine is the closest thing available on the market to the old oc. However the half life is considerably shorter. It would be nice if they would bring the old ones back, however I'm not holding my breath.

The studies have been done both by Purdue and other drug companies seeking to market generic versions of OxyContin OC. There are now over 30 studies that have been conducted; every study has produced the same result. Like it or not , believe it or not; OP and OC deliver exactly the same amount of oxycodone at exactly the same rate. Zero differences in blood levels, absorption time, rate of release, or duration of action. Proven over 30 times! The major difference is that some find the new OP formula harder to swallow. BUT the Patient Med Guide states clearly to take only one tab at a time with a full glass of water. I'm sure many will get angry at this post but the studies simply do not bear out people's complaints that the new version doesn't work as well. If you're dissatisfied with the truth, switch to some other extended release opioid or take immediate release oxycodone several times per day. OxyContin OC has been deemed unsafe and banned by the FDA. No amount of whining is going to change that.
