When I first tried fentanyl patches after years of oral meds I found they only worked for 2 days not the 3 they are supposed to last. My doctor switched my prescription to every 2 days, and said it was relatively common for it to only last for 2. Sometimes it doesn't even seem to last for the full 2 days.

I'm currently going through withdrawals from Fentanyl patches. I would not recommend them. I have been a chronic pain sufferer for many years and have taken many different meds that I have ended up discontinuing due to the fact that I hate taking meds usually because of their side-effects. Nothing has been as difficult to stop as these fentanyl patches... I was only on 12 mcg/hr (which is the lowest dose) for 3 months but it's still bad. There's no real way to ween off of them since they are in patch form. Cutting them in half does not work. They still distribute the same amount of medicine every hour, the patch just simply runs out faster since half is missing. Putting on another patch will just make you start over from square one. The only thing that has made this process bearable is that my Dr prescribed me Clonidine & Xanax to help with the withdrawal symptoms. The drawback of those meds is that they make you very sleepy... So taking them during the day makes it a bit difficult to function but it's better than dealing with the restlessness, anxiety, irritability and that "crawling out of your skin" feeling. You might still end up with diarrhea or vomiting which are other common withdrawal effects. I'd say stick with pill forms when it comes to opioids or narcotics, because at least then you can ween gradually and ease yourself off the meds, which will greatly decrease the likelihood of experiencing these absolutely awful withdrawal symptoms.

I have decreased the amount of oxy 30s I have been on for a long time now, I was taking 12 a day prior to my spinal fusion in Nov, at which time they added 2 100 gram fentanal patches, yes two patches at a time, they were unable to manage my pain it if surgery. I have since stopped the patches. ..fun fun and have decresed the oxy 30mg to five to six a day. .I ran short on my oxy this month about a week or so But have a box of 50 mg fentanol patches that were left over, will one 50mg patch every three days lessen the blow to my body from running out of my 30mg oxys.. basically replacing 5-6 30's a day down one 50mg fentanyl patch every three days. . Hope that made sense.

Oxycodone is easier because you can ween off of them. Ask your dr how to cut the dosage so you don't get withdrawal symptoms.

Good Luck Do not tell your Doc. just do better next month. Use a weekly pill organizer, it helps to keep me on track, I never take more than prescribed now. If you take too many pills, you are only hurting yourself and its not good on your body either.

I've been on fentanyl patches and oxycodone (30mg) for over a decade. The patches have 2 advantages in my opinion, and one disadvantage.

The advantags of the patch are, 1) b/c fentanyl patches do not give off a "buzz" like oxycodone, they can be easier to get off of, b/c you won't miss the patches, from a mental or emotional standpoint. For ME, that made the patches much easier to get off of, by reducing the dosage from 100 mcg, to 50 and now to 25mcg.

The final weaning is yet to come, but at least I know I won't feel the depression I felt when I went cold turkey off the oxycodone. I went off the oxy's when I learned I was pregnant. Despite how badly my back was injured, I didn't want the baby born with a physical dependence.

ANYHOW, the disadvantage of the patch IS SOLVABLE...yes the patches can come off. So that means you need to put another bandaid type of adhesive patch OVER the fentanyl patch, so they don't fall off before their 72 hour dosage has been used. NO PATCH can stay on by itself without help. (Hormone patches, nicotine patches, pain patches ALL require help if they are to stay in place for 3 days.

You can buy or order the Tagaderm patches (pricey, but most effective & see thru) or just get some see thru adhesives that are made to keep patches in place. You can get these in any drug store.

ALSO note that if you take a hot shower or use heating pads for pain, when they are applied near or on the patch site, they speed up the delivery.

That speeding up of the medication delivery, is potentially dangerous. So I apply the patch after my shower/bath, and then wait at least 24 hours before taking another bath or hot shower. Or I skip a day of showers if I can, just to give the patch a full chance to distribute the dose.

Most definitely The Fentanyl will cause the worst withdrawl. Here are some for sure things that will ease any withdrawl from anything.
1 immodium take as directed and if you need another dose you will be finè.
2. Don't worry about anyone saying Oh no don't take xanax. But you wont be on them that long, most diffinantly ask your doc and tell him or her your experiencing alot of anxiety. These will calm your muscles, your mind everything. No sense in suffering if you have a full proof way to ease something that can reach horrendous sickness and mental strain.
3.Airborn to keep immune system up
These are just a few things you can do.

Okay Good Luck

When you did the patch in 12hr stretches, how were you able to get the patches to stick when you reapplied them? I really want to wean off this stuff and this is the most unique approach I've seen.

Did anybody answer this? I'm on 12mcg fentanyl patch, only 3 patches so 9 days. I don't expect I'll have much withdrawal. Does anyone know or have had the same usage/experience? I'll have percocet afterwards as needed but hope not to need it much. Please advise. I have a huge amount of responsibility coming up coinciding with when I finish the last patch!! I'm very worried. Please help! Thanks.

I quit fentanyl cold after being on it for 3 months. i'm an alcoholic that was up to 1.75 liters a day of vodka. the withdrawals from the fentanyl were worse then quitting booze cold. being on the fentanyl was horrible. i fell asleep in my food, couldn't walk, had trouble with my speech...i'm sure you can taper off it, but my advice is never start it.

I need some advise asap plz. I was a heavy H and methamphetamine user for years, but a year ago I went to jail and had to stop cold turkey and I have not taken methamphetamine or H since... but about 2 months ago i started taking 30mg oxycontin a day and 1mg xanax a day and after a week I stopped but I felt s***ty the day after I stopped so I started taking 10mg methadone for a week then 5mg methadone for 2 weeks while still taking the xanax. Then I stopped both cuz I dont wanna be on this crap any more so I made it a day and the withdraw sucked and I had a lot going on with work and court so I couldnt just lay around and feel like s*** so I started taking 30mg of oxycodone to help me though the methadone withdraws. I've been taking it for about 10days now and that's all I been taking and now I'm gonna go down to 15mg oxycodone for the next 3 days (I'm gonna take it orally) and then I want to just stop and get through what ever withdraws I'm gonna have but I have a really important meeting 4 days after I plan to stop so I want to know if you guys think ill be feeling ok by then? How bad am I gonna feel from what I've been doing to myself these past 2 months? And how long after my last dose will it be excreted through urine? Any help plz? Thank u

I have had 3 knee surgeries. The right knee took a while to get better it was a latteral release and the doctor gave me oxycodone 10/325 and it worked the doctor had me on these taking 5 and 6 a day.Now both knees were giving me a fit it got to where i had to leave work and go home lay down and put heat on them. The doctor told me i should start looking for a different type of work i was managing a kitchen in a tourist town where from 7 in the morning we were feeding up to 2100 people. After about a year the knee got good enough to where the Dr ask me if i felt like it helped enough to do the left knee and i said no.And with only a GED there wasn't much I could do it even hurt when I set for a while.I couldn't stand it after i had to start leaving work to go home and lay down to put heat on it.The place where i worked finally had to let me go.So i lost my job and my insurance. When me and my wife couldn't afford the Dr. anymore he just stopped writing my medicine and i got very sick after over a year of taking oxycodone. I didn't even know what was wrong. i was in allot of pain and i thought i had the flu until my wife looked it up and i was in WD. i had never experienced this but after a few days it went away but the pain was killing me. My family doctor started giving me hydrocodone and it helped. But he was leaving the practice center there and was going to open a suboxone clinic where i lived and ask me if i wanted to try that because if i remained there the other doctors were going to send me to a pain clinic and i had no idea what that was.And he said that in Europe they had been using them for pain for years. it wasn't working that great so he put me on 4 a day and for me to break them and take them every 4 hours. And that still wasn't really controlling the pain but before he could refer me to a pain management place he passed away.Well the Dr that took that over automatically treated me like i was on it for detox and i couldn't make him understand. He put me on 2 a day and said i couldn't get no more out of 4 than i could 2 finally after 3 years of suffering i went to a orthopedic and he says i had a torn meniscus and allot of debree and severe arthritis in my left knee. So he did surgery and my new family Dr said he would handle the pain meds. After about 5 weeks and allot of physical therapy he put me back on suboxone now this is after i had been disabled bye the state. I had a very bad limp and never got the motion back in my leg but medicare wouldn't pay for anymore therapy.

He finally started to listen after my wife got all over him and said he was just trying to keep me on the suboxone for the money because medicare didn't pay for that.He started writing me 15 mg oxycodone which was only about $30 compared to $500 a month cash for suboxone. When i could never get the motion back in my leg i went back to the orthopedic the first 2 visits i saw him and he daid to keep working with it.Now the 3rd visit he was backed up and couldn't see me after he had already told me that if it didn't work out he would have to put me to sleep and manipulate the leg but the longer we waited the more chance of it breaking.A month later i went back for the 4th visit same thing he was backed up and i couldn't see him unless i could wait for 4 hours at least well i told them there was no way i could sit that long after it took an hour and a half to get there. So my family Dr said we would get a second opinion and i went to a different orthopedic. He took MRI's of my leg and my back because my foot was numb all the time since the surgery. He said i had a torn meniscus and sometime in the past i had fractured my L4 and L5 in my back.I told him that the other Dr had just done surgery to fix the knee so he left the room when he came back he said he thought he was wrong. And i think he done that just to cover the other Dr because he knew him.He wanted me to wait 6 months and come back because the knee was so sore and he wanted to see if the back shifted because it had grown a bone spur in it and that was why my foot was numb and when i put my heel down it clicked in my back and shot a pain all the way to my foot. When i went back to see him in 6 months he wanted to know what i was doing there i should be at the Dr that done the surgery. His assistant finally showed him why i was there. Now by this time i was on 5 30mg oxycodone and 1 15 at night when i woke up because the pain would wake me up. My body had built up such a tolerance that i was in WD in 3 and half hours. He sent me over to have a MRI of my knee and set one up for my back but now my family Dr has me on fentanyl 75mcg and 2 percocet 10 325 but its not controlling the pain all the way.So anybody that cares tell me who is at fault here. They say i was on the suboxone so long it ruined my receptors in my brain. And then they wonder why i have so much anxiety and depression.

I was on fentynal 50 and oxycodone15 for a very long time. Then i moved to montana (from washington state). The new pain management doctor did not believe in breakthrough meds. And i was taking 4 pills a day. And i had 15 a month for the fent patch. He put me on a higher dose of fent. 75mg. I got sick the first night and the second day, i had pain, because i had no breakthrough meds! Going cold turkey because of no ocycodone! I wrote to the doc, telling him it took a long time to get just the right combination for me that worked, and then he tsked me off! Just because he doesnt believe in breakthrough, doesnt mean it works for everyone. Any help on this?
