Oxycodone Hcl 5mg Doesn't Last Long Enough (Top voted first)
UpdatedHey! So a little background on myself, I have been dealing with back pain for over 5 years, and finally switched to a new clinic who has confirmed that I have MS and Ankylosing Spondylitis Reactive Arthritis. I also have 2 discs out of place (L3 and L4). My doctor recently started me on Oxycodone HCl 5mg every 4-6 hours, but not to exceed 4 per day. Well here is my issue: they last a whopping hour and a half tops. So then I have to sit around in pain while being a stay-at-home mother to a 2 y/o, for at least another 2 hours. But I don't want to take more than prescribed, and I am not sure what to do at this point. Is there anything that lasts longer than this?? Thank you in advance!

Hello, KLM0116! How are you?
It is normal for your doctor to want to start you off with the lowest dose to see if that handles your pain, because you can always go up in the dosage, it's much harder to go down.
This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
I'd suggest just talking to your doctor about the issue to let them know it isn't handling your pain. They can prescribe a higher dose, or a time released formulation that may help you more.
Is there anything else I can help with?
Hey! It might be worth an appointment w/your doctor to discuss the change.5 mg is ...nothing...But,the other poster is right about that as well.Way easier to go up than down...
Trust me READ THIS WHOLE THING! I am just a 28 yearld male, who has been in sales and management my whole life and played college football with a back problem as the end result. Here's my answer and then my advice that has been life changing. If you want to get addicted or physically dependent to pain medicine like I did for a herniated disk in my back, ok then my answer is simple, tell your doc in a non emotional completely logical explanation of how your medicine is limiting your physical conditions and that you would like something to help you more continue to be a good mom... avoid Extended Release meds if at all possible, they cause way more day to day withdrawals, i.e. OxyContin, Oxymorphone like Opana, and keep clear of any Fentanyl patch or i.r. buccal tablets. Not that they would give you something that strong, but later down the line if your ms gets worse, sticking with instant release oxycodone is fine. If you notice weird side effects after about 6 months or so like fatigue and anxiety and stuff with your heart blood pressure or weakness in your arms or legs or head aches, it's probably the metabolites in that medicine not reacting well with your body so you can switch to a hydrocodone or an oxymorphome like dilaudid or a hydromorphone., but keep away from Fentanyl at all costs, no matter how bad it gets, it's just too deadly. But it doesn't really matter. You will hate pain medicine in time, trust me, everything that was once good goes away unless you get dangerously close to OD and you do not want that, unavoidable respiratory depression death. Or you just end up taking your meds like you do avoiding that withdrawal. It sucks, and unfortunately most all doctors basically make us think we have to be on these for life, we are life patients or in my case risk the 50/50 chance with surgery. I was determined to get off pain meds so I did a lot of research, and the funny thing was it is simple... Whole food Plant Based Vegan diet.
I'm 8 days in and my pain is literally almost gone, they say it takes about two weeks, my fatigue is gone, anxiety, panic attacks, weak arms and weak and stiff legs and I'm filled with an indescribable sense of well being and energy. The thing is you don't what healthy feels like when you have been sick your whole life. And I'm slowly getting off all the pain meds, but the brain reward center is a tricky one when your no longer in pain. So for you a whole food plant based Vegan diet is the number one cure and hault and reversal of MS!!! I'll say it again, dont be a life patient and suffer if you dont have to, it takes 2 days to feel great and 2 weeks to begin reversal with a Whole Food Plant Based Vegan Diet. Why doctors dont tell you this, well aside from they would loose business and money and are being fed info from the pharmaceutical companies, because they have never learned it. No joke ask your doc how many nutrition courses are required to be a doctor. Check out this reference below, showing recent studies that a Vegan diet has stopped 95% of MS in early stages and reversed a lot of them... Watch on Netflix. "What the Health". "Forks over Knives" and although not a completely vegan video although i still like it but dont think you should eat any more meat ever having MS is "in Defense of Food". But that last one the guy himself is vegan but says he very rarely eats meat, however he is trying to sell a book. Lol after watching the first two and reading that article if you are not convinced to try it for 2 weeks to see the results or even a few days to feel the energy idk what else in the world could convince someone to change except to make healthy choices to live longer and better for their child as a mom. Oh plus you loose weight and get fit. Just make sure not to let one thing in with casein, dairy, egg, or meat, and pick healthy options and then try new stuff bc after 2 to 3 days foods that i thought were ehh, were tasting amazing like mushrooms I've always hated now i love, brown rice and quinoa have so much flavor now, and trust me you will get the protein... 20 grams of protein in one cup of corn and i think 12 or 14 in a cup of peas, the biggest animals on earth eat only plants, buffalo, elephants, gorillas, hippos mainly, rhinos... check out the videos, do your homework and stop letting others make your health decisions for you, it took me a year to figure that out with me and my wife have sarcoma cancer, that her tumor has never stopped growing through a year of chemo, and she has been doing this vegan thing for a month now and all of the sudden it stopped and started to reduce slightly in size with time, plant will beat yer cancer that docs do not know how to help her, its a type of sarcoma called Desmoid Fibromatosis, that is unopperable for surgery bc of the size... Check it out let me know how you feel in a week
