Oxetol 300 Mg Side Effects (Page 4)
(Newest replies first)

Hi there,

My dad is 58yrs old, he's an epilepsy patient for last 30+ years..Right from inital stage till date he has been using sodium valproate 400mg twice a day. Recently a few weeks back he's affected with epilepsy (fits) after nearly two years gap.

As a common practice we have consulted the doctor and has make him to undergo all the test (ECG/EPG) etc tests.

As a result the doctor whom we consulted has advised to stop using sodium valproate 400mg and replace it with Oxetol 300mg and assured this should take care of the issue.

Now all im worried here is, with my dad being 58yrs old, will changing the medicine now have any kind of impact? Will he be safe?

Please advise, im pretty worried about his health...

Thanks
Pr

Hi, Im 32 years old and have been taking Trileptal 600mg (3 pills) for the past 10 years. Unfortunately my doctor will not be available for the next 2 months and I was forced to seek a temporary replacement. He prescribed Oxatol. (Same dosage) I know both contain Oxcarbazepine. Is there a difference? Will I get any side effects by switching prescriptions? Is Oxetol more effective?

My son had a seizure in August,2009 ( first time in life at the age of 20yrs). An EEG was done and reported as :
The awake record shows a responsive occipital alpha activity at 8-10hz. Slowing in the range 4-6hz seen in the right temporo-parietal regions. Spike and slow wave discharges are seen inthe right parietal and temporal regions. Over-breathing and photic stimulation : no further abnormality seen.
Comments : Abnormal EEG showing potentially epileptogenic focus in the right parietal and right temporal regions. He was prescribed oxycarbazine 300mg and taking regularly since.
Yesterday, (10.09.11) in his office in the afternoon he felt guidiness and slumped down and neck turned to left and jaws were tight and bit his tongue slightly. There was no foam from his mouth and was ok in 5mins. This took place after along presentation in a Seminar. He had a light breakfast in the morning and had his lunch only after the presentation was over at 1400hrs. He was very hungry. The incident occurred after lunch.
He was given first aid immediately in a hospital and reported as LOC,seizure,Bp 80/130 and asked to continue the medicine and get a brain CT scan done by the doctor.
What could be the reason for such an incident to trigger after a gap of 2 yrs. even though he has been taking medicine regularly? What are your suggestions?

Hi, I had my first seizure on 17th august 2009. Then i was put on Oxetol 450 1-0-1. after 21 months , this mar ch i had my second seizure. Following which it was increased to Oxetol 600. A week earlier i had my third seizure. My doctor said that he's adding a tablet of Zonegren 100 to my night dose. Also My weight has increased by 6 Kgs over the last 2 years.
I am unmarried, 24 years old, and all my seizures have been preceeded by an aura and their duration has pregressively reduced to one fourth of my first seizure.
Will i ever be free of epilepsy with these indications, what else can i do apart from taking medication on time to help myself?

To ANYONE and EVERYONE who has experienced seizures: STAY AWAY FROM LONG HOT BATHS AND SHOWERS. Raising body tempreture severely can bring on seizures within 24 hours. Keep this in mind especially during extended high tempreture summer months. And drink lots of water.
These suggestions, unfortunately, won't apply to everyone, but WILL help many who never realized the dangerous, negative connection between seizures and high body tempreture.

hi there, I'm 26 years old.I have epilepsy since my childhood. But after taking medicines for 3 years I went normal & never got seizures again. Lately, in mar 2009 I again got seizure when consulted with doctor he started my medicine. I never got seizure again from the day I started medicines. But from this Jan 11 I'm facing little difficulty. I am not able to concentrate & find myself in a state of confusion several times. Along with this anxiety, sadness, loss of hairs, fast heart beating & weakness are there. Even I'm scared of closed spaces. I fear from everything. I don't have confidence to go out alone. Please help. I want to stop my medication too. Please suggest.

Thanks a lot for all help !

i got my first attack 2 months befole my CAT exams in yeat 2004, after that i had beed eating zeptol- 200 for some time, again i started getting attack after 2008, then i went to a neurologist from NIMHANS, bangaore, he expain me that the chances of getting more seizures is directly proportionate to your increase of waight (I am over weight - 98 now, then 88. with the hight if 5.6 fts.), he gave me the dose of oxetol 300x2 + Eptoin 100x1; on 1-0-1 basis. he explaind me that this is the dose i am giving you with the waight of 80 Kgs. b'coz this chemical "Oxcarbazepine" tends to increase the waight so if i take more "Oxcarbazepine" my wait wil increase more.

Kruti, those instances of your being unconscious were probably seizures, which is exactly why your doctor wants you on this medication. It can take some time to reach its full effect in your body, but if it works for you, then it should help prevent them from occurring.

And as to the weight gain, the information you were told on that was actually not correct. Oxcarbazapine actually usually causes a loss of appetite and, because of that, weight loss.

Prasad, yes, those could be side effects of the Oxcarbazapine in the Oxetol.

It can cause skin rashes in various parts of the body, which could explain the boils on her hands. Alternatively, it can also cause sun sensitivity, which may also be what caused them.

If she is experiencing such severe problems from it, she really should speak to her doctor about trying a different medication.

Hello Verwon,
My wife is 23 years old and an year in march back she had fainted and symptoms that were noticed were doubtful about sezisures and again she fainted in November . So the doctors this time detected it as sezisures and recommended her to take 300mg oxetol and she has been taking them regularly since then but she is not comfortable using them and she feels that she is constantly putting on weight. Also she has heat boils on her hands. please do let me know what can I do to get her back normal and does these come under the list of side effects of Oxetol??

manikandan, this medication isn't listed as causing a lot of sexual side effects, so it really shouldn't cause a problem with that aspect of your married life.

However, if you do plan to become pregnant, you will want to discuss things with your doctor first, because this medication is believed to cause problems for the baby, when the mother is taking it. In such cases, the benefits and possible risks have to be carefully evaluated to decide whether or not you should continue using it, while pregnant.

As to the strokes, there is no way to definitively answer that question. There is always a possibility of that happening to anyone. However, what you have experienced so far are not strokes, but seizures and they are quite different.

The same applies to the question about whether or not you children will inherit the same condition. The possibility is always there, but no one can saw for certain, one way or the other.

As to smoking and drinking, such activities aren't good for anyone's health, even if they don't have other medical conditions. Here's a few links with some more information:

Pr, you are very welcome and I am glad I was able to help. As to his increase in sleeping, that can be normal and it usually caused by 2 factors. 1) The new medication, because his body is getting used to it and 2) if the old medication was discontinued, his body has to adjust to no longer having it. That means he kind of has a double whammy to deal with for awhile.

Jithin, it is really hard to say with any certainty what may be causing your problem. You should really consult with a doctor to look into it.

The Oxcarbazepine in this medication can also be used as a mood stabilizer, however this also means that in some people it may have the opposite effect and can cause them to get more moody and anxious.
