Atarax contains the active ingredient Hydroxyzine, which is an antihistamine. Since I do not know your medical history, I cannot guess why your doctor may have prescribed it; but it is used to treat allergies, prevent nausea, to treat anxiety as well as some other conditions.
In order to recommend a good substitute, one would essentially need to know "why" you're taking this medication in the first place.
