Opiates And Lack Of Physicians Willing To Prescribe (Top voted first)

Updated

"First do no harm." The starting line in the Hippocratic Oath. I have been a chronic pain patient off and on for 20 years. Should have been ON for the duration, but idiot overdosers and Congress got involved. Drs. are not fulfilling their path. Legitimate pain patients like myself live a miserable existence. We are not seeking drugs to get high or to sell, but to at least dull our pain. I contemplate suicide daily as a way to not feel the constant pain. There is no joy, no happiness and nothing to look forward to when even the smallest task brings tears to your eyes. Physicians are afraid to prescribe meds they know will alleviate pain because a bunch of bureaucrats, far removed from reality, dictate what they can prescribe. How unreasonable is that? Congress doesn't know me or my situation, much less the degree of pain I suffer from daily. So doctors make us suffer because we might get "addicted". Physically dependent of course, but addicted, no. I have gone through withdrawal more times than I can remember because of limits on meds and Drs who are more afraid of edicts from government than the health and welfare of their patients. I inevitably get angry and very frustrated, on days when pain is especially bad because I KNOW there is medication available that can help. What is it going to take for health care professionals to do what is best for the patient? My suicide? 1000 suicides? How many is enough to wake them up and get out from uncle Sam's thumb?

I share your frustration & my heart breaks for you to needlessly suffer, feeling isolated; stranded when your legitimate “lifeline” was suddenly cut from you as if being lost at sea w/no rescue in sight!

Every word you’ve written here is right on target as if you’ve read the minds of all of us...now millions, suffering feeling abandoned by the “sheep” Dr’s who are overpowering the Dr’s who believe in Pain Mgmt based on years of study, trials, research that implemented the use of opiates once ALL surgeries, procedures failed leaving us the choice of either Pain Management vs a wheelchair bedsore painful existence. I know this as yes ...I am a Chronic Pain Patient (CPP).

In 1981 a near fatal car accident put me in a wheelchair; for years after I had 5 spinal lumbar surgeries in addition to numerous procedures, I was also a test patient for the development of nerve block injections. I exhausted every treatment avail resulting in a failed back syndrome, a spine loaded with arachnoiditis (scar tissue growth), degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis.

Along cane a miracle in 1989; my Neurosurgeon recommended me as a perfect candidate as a test patient in the research & development trials of Opiate Pain Management to work w/the best Dr specialists; I obliged & happy I made the choice.

Back & forth to NY given monitored doses of Percocet (oxycodone/acetaminophen combo) ... Within 3 months I was out of wheelchair!!! It was a full blown miracle; I went back to work part time, got married, had 2 beautiful daughters! managed OPIATE PAIN MANAGEMENT SAVED MY LIFE!

Now, in the year 2020 like you & all of us LEGITIMATE CHRONIC PAIN PATIENTS I’m also back to where I started. Our lifeline taken away; our meds so misunderstood; the medicine was created for a reason.

Godspeed to all!

I hear ya loud and clear Moe! It's a very screwed up situation but when my pain gets so bad my blood pressure rises and the anger kicks in due to what I went thru last year trying to keep my STABLE dose of pain meds. I was treated like crap and this Dr. did not care. I tried other pain Drs. Same treatment even though I had all my trays, reports etc. sent in prior. The government has taken over. I will keep you in my prayers. Hang in there.

Hi Moe
I am so sorry about your pain - I went through a patch of constant pain (although it was just for 3 months) and it almost drove me crazy.

I do not know what type of pain you have, but would like to suggest something to take the edge off, while doctors are unwilling to prescribe opiates. Please try CBD. Maybe it can help you. All the best to you. Take care.

It is sad, and unfortunate, but the only choice now days is to go to a pain management clinic, and even then it is no guarantee you will be prescribed what you may feel " works best" for you, it is always totally in the dr's hands. This is the way it is all over- from patients that have terminal illness, to someone that has injury from accident; the medical field has " discovered" ( yea right!) that non-narcotic pain meds work actually better for relief than those that are narcotic... I don't know who they did the " testing" on to get that answer, I know that I never have had tylenol, motrin, ect.. work so well for me!

Re: Liza (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

CBD from hemp is useless. Medical marijuana available varies from state to state. In NY the availability and management is a disgrace. There is no testing to assure that each batch produced is the same. Ingredients say: hybrid, so different strains and terpenes are not identified. I found it to be expensive and not effective for pain relief. After several days it made me lethargic regardless of the ratio of CBD to THC. After a few weeks I developed severe abdominal pain. I know other states offer a broad spectrum of products including edibles. They also list ingredients and test for quality from one batch to another. NY pushed through minimal variety/strength just to be able to say they had a MMP. The so called pharmacists at the dispensaries often know nothing about cannabis. They previously worked at CVS or another big name pharmacy.
