What is expected of a nurse to do or know before giving a patient a multivitamin supplement

Looking at it from their perspective, I can only imagine that they would first have to know whether or not your body was even deficient in certain nutrients to merit reason for giving patients a multivitamin supplement to begin with.

Most multivitamins I know of generally do not pose any serious risks that you should be concerned about if taken appropriately. Most of the foods/drinks we consume on a daily basis are either fortified with vitamins & minerals or already naturally contain them.

With that said, it doesn't seem like there would be any special nursing responsibilities outside of being sanitary, when it comes to giving a patient some vitamins. This is just my theory as I am not a nurse; but to any nurse's out there, if I'm missing something crucial please do fill in the blanks! :)
