Not Feeling Any Pain Relief
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I'm on a 6 day 4mg pack of methylprednisolone. It was given to me for sciatic and nerve relief. I just finished day 2, still have horrible pain, trouble walking, using the bathroom, get random headaches and diarrhea. The only way I am semi-comfortable is when I am laying on the side that hurts. I haven't had pain in my back, only from my thigh to toes. I still feel the pain when I stand and sit. The only relief I get is when I keep the leg bent while laying on it. I'm desperate for any advice. I've been to the er 4 times, given every muscle relaxer pill, and a shot of morphine. I am scheduled for an mri after the 6 days are up, but freaked out because laying on my back is extremely painful.

I found out my mri results on June 3rd, I will need back surgery. I have a L5-S1 massive herniated disc. I will be having a left side laminectomy and discectomy on July 21st. I was told very little movement. Which I find easy, since walking, sitting, and standing are far to painful. The Dr gave me 60 percocet, however they don't even take the edge off. I can't make it to the bathroom, so I was given a bucket I can barely get myself up to go on. My bed has been lowered to help me better. When I do get up to use the "bathroom" or to make my way downstairs, I am in chronic pain. I feel dizzy from being bedridden, any cough or sneeze aggravates all the way down to my toes. I also lost feeling in my 2 small toes, and I feel like I have water running down my leg. My Dr said I am to far gone for inj's. at this point. As much as I can not wait to be out of this pain, I know there is pain to follow.

I am nervous about the surgery, I am a smoker, I have a lot of stress going on around me, and I am overweight. I'm doing my best to cut down on smoking, I eat healthy, and I try to ignore the things that stress me. However, every day that passes, I find myself in more pain. I have not been able to shower in a week, because I feel my left leg shaking and wanting to give out. I don't want to fall and cause myself anymore damage. I also can't sleep more than an hour, if that, at a time.

I will look into that. I haven't heard of it, but definitely willing to give anything a try. Thank you again! Your reply has been more helpful than the er trips and few Dr's I've seen.

Hollie.... if you have sciatica, why don't you have a rizolisis (radiofrequency rhizotomy) done? I had it done two months ago and believe me I walk... and the torture of standing up is gone... I have it done in Barcelona... hope you get well, I know what you are going through... excuse my english.

Thank you for your reply. Today is day 6, and I am still in a lot of pain. My MRI is tomorrow, and I am in no way excited for it. I've had an MRI, and freaked out. So I was sent to a sit down one. My Dr did prescribe me valium for this round. I just don't see myself being able to push through this time. The pain is worse than anything I have had before. Including kidney stones.

I have been put on several anti-inflammatory pills, and they do absolutely nothing. I am not one to care for taking pills as is.

I do know my disc injuries as well as all nerve damage I have. I just wish they would choose the epidural, I was supposed to get, or the next step.

This is all due to a car accident back in 2010. Once the ins ran out, Dr's gave up on me.

I am going to try and stretch and walk a bit again today. As much as I want to give up, I am a fighter. I have always been very independent.

Tomorrow I start 15mg of Meloxicam, again with the anti-inflammatory.

Thanks again!

Hello, Hollie! How are you?

This is not an analgesic, it is a steroid medication that can help with any possible inflammation you may have going on, thus it can take several days, before it reaches its full efficacy level in the body and actually helps.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, acne, weight changes and fluid retention.

As to the MRI, the scan may be painful, but it will also be worth it to find out what's wrong. I had one done on my hip about 8 or 9 years ago and I was in tears the whole time, because the position I had to be in hurt A LOT, but we discovered that I was developing some arthritis in that hip, so it was well worth the time and pain.

Is there anything else I can help with?
