No Plan To Stop Suboxone?

So I'm on sub for pain management. I started it August 2013. I was on upwards of 720 30mg IR morphine and oxycodone with no abuse issues, but most certainly my body was dependent and I felt like the pills were causing more pain than not. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis that started in August of 2009, and so far nothing to treat RA has worked for me. So I entered pain management for chronic pain. Anyway, knowing my body was fully dependent I wanted to w/d in a safe environment away from home and chose a clinic near Boulder, CO. I was expecting them to give me clonadine or something of the sort, but they didn't. In the middle of my w/d, or as I call it, Indian Sweat Hut moment they gave me something to put under my tongue, I slept like a baby. The next morning I woke with a migraine and was given another dose of sub. 1 hour later I was out of pain, out of w/d and back to someone I hadn't seen in a couple years. The doctors didn't recognize me. A miracle so to speak.

Fast forward, to today, 2.5 years on sub highest dose 32mg a day, I'm on 24mg a day right now. It does not control my pain 100%. I am on prednisone and a lot of other meds regarding the RA. I did find a biologic for the RA that is working enough I want to taper the prednisone and I am doing that right now. The plan was to taper off the sub next, but after reading and reading and reading...I wonder if I really should get off of it. Between the horror of w/d and paws, and the fact that I will most likely need something long acting and due to a weight loss surgery sub lingual or patch are my only long term options...maybe getting off it isn't the best plan. It's not ruined my life, it's not caused more problems than it's worth. The drop from 32 to 24 wasn't hard, I'd be willing to drop again, but is there honestly a good reason to get off something that does help and getting off of it would potentially make things horrible? The w/d will most certainly put me in a flare...and those are treated with steroids...it's a crazy catch 22. Just interested in other's thoughts on why to get off something that hasn't been horrible for me, but rather helpful...Thanks

Some people do stay on it long-term, when necessary. Only you and your doctor can decide what's right for you, but no, not everyone has to get off of it.

The FDA classifies this medication as an opiate that is most commonly used to treat great drug addiction, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is your doctor wanting you to taper off of it? What type of doctor are you seeing?
