what is the side effects ## Hi paulette, Nitrofurantoin can cause nausea and vomiting, fever, rash, hypersensitivity pneumonitis. It can also cause pulmonary fibrosis. I was prescribed this med at end of June for treatment of UT infection and cleared me right up; a month later I have irratation in the roof of my mouth and on my tongue kinda like a scorched feeling and it bothers me to eat or drink. Can this medicine be used to gratis a tooth infection? ## Hi Heidi, I have my doubts, because Nitrofurantoin has poor tissue penetration and is not indicated to treat anything other than simple cystitis (urinary tract infections). I would however recommend using clove essential oil for tooth and mouth related infections. Not only does it numb the pain, but it also kills the infection. A cheap natural alternative to prescription drugs, that is more effective in my opinion. why are people over 65 not advised to use Nitrofur Mac? I have taken it for several years for UTI which I get when I do not take the medication. Is there some other antibiotic that can be prescribed in place of it? I am 82 ## My father is 85 and has suffered with bladder cancer for 10 years, therefore he has many UTIs, This past fall he also had a pacemaker put in. Now with this new UTI the doctor gave him Nitrofur Mac for the first time. After taking it for a day and a half his calf has swollen up and his knees ache. I was put on Nitrofurmacr 100 mg for seven days for an UTI and finished yesterday. Today my symptoms are coming back. Do I have to go back to the Dr. for a new Rx? Why didn't this work? ## Not all medications work for everyone to treat any given problem. While most times the first antibiotic prescribed works for people, this just isn't always the case. I may e having a miscarriage due to a utility.....I have been. my dr put me on this and ever sense i cant go to work cause im so nause my stomach hurts reay bad.i stopped taking it for one day and i was fine, then i was told to take it with apple sauce that didnt work so im not taking it anymore and calling my dr if u dont like how u feel on it stop taking it and call yr dr ## Many of these antibiotics have some pretty undesirable side effects associated with them. Unfortunately, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite, are all common side effects of Nitrofurantoin, and I can't really say that other antibiotics are much better in terms of side effects; unless you're seeking a more natural alternative. My dog is on Nitrofur-Macr because she is no longer responding to toher antiobiotic for urinary tract infection. I am giving her food with each dose. Any suggestions. ## I'll admit that I am not very familiar with the use of most medications in animals, most of my information and knowledge relates to their use and effects in humans. However, I did find a listing for this in a veterinary manual, it isn't extremely detailed, but it does seem that it can cause nausea in dogs, just as it can in people, it looks like many of the side effects are very similar. Person on this is allergic to sulfur. Is this drug safe for them? drug in question is nitrofurantoin Monoh ## Hi Bertha, Nitrofurantoin "is not" a sulfa based drug, as opposed to other antibiotics like Bactrim. I have a standard beige gray capsule with Mylan 3422, could this be Nitrofurantoin Mono Mac? ## I have pills called Mylan 3244 and can find nothing on line relative to what they are. Can I take Mylan 3422 for my absessed tooth? ## What has your dentist advised? This contains 100mgs of Nitrofurantoin, which is an antibiotic, but is not usually the first choice for a dental infection. And, if it does help, it would only be temporary, because whatever is causing the tooth to become infection needs to be addressed and corrected, or it will just return.

Humana Prescription benefit Plan told me they will not cover this drug anymore as it is high risk for older patients. What are these risks? I have been taking 100mgs'day for about a year now due to kidney infections from kidney stones and an abcess. I take it as a precaution ( prophylactic) and have not had any problems since. ## It has been found that all of its side effects are more pronounced and common in the elderly, in addition it creates the risk of pulmonary fibrosis. In this case, it is probably best to speak to your doctor about using an alternative medication. Are there any questions or comments?
