Nitrofurantoin Mono Mac Side Effects
UpdatedI am taking this medication for a UTI. I have been on it for a day and a half. This morning I was suddenly wakened by a loud sound in my ears (sounded like birds chirping), and a stinging pain across my face, down my spine into my arms and legs - worse on my left side than on my right. I sat up and walked around and it finally subsided, although it was hard to walk at first. It felt like my muscles didn't want to respond. I laid back down, as I was very tired, and in about a half hour it happened again, only worse. I am now up and looking for answers. Could this be from the nitrofurantoin?

Hi, Sally! I'm not sure, it's hard to say. Some people have experienced some very odd side effects from antibiotics, it's happened to me, so I have to say that it is possible.
What I'd suggest doing is contacting your doctor to have things checked out, because there's also a chance that it could be due to some other health issue.
Have you ever had a problem with any other medications?
Hello Sally! Please contact your doctor immediately if you haven't already! My mom went to the ER with a massive Bladder/Kidney infection. After prescribing Cipro (sp) they sent us a letter later changing the RX to Nitrofurantoin. 3 days later, my mom has had what seems like a stroke. Her GP didn't think the antibiotic had anything to do with it so she took her next dose. The stroke-like symptoms occurred 15 minutes later. Coincidence? Not a chance. Both episodes happened 15 minutes after taking the pill at 10pm. Get a new antibiotic PLEASE!!!!
I'm experiencing the same side effects and it doesn't feel good at all, I can't sleep having problems breathing I will never take this medication again, I was hospitalized over the weekend and I'm unable to work, this is the worse feeling.
Agree with getting off this stuff. My mother went through very similar side effects. Really can't believe they would give this to elderly people. What is wrong with the normal go to antibiotics? Especially when it's not chronic UTI's we're talking about. Seems to me the medical and pharmaceutical professions are relying on the quick fixes instead of some good old fashioned research before prescribing a drug to a person, young or old especially for something fairly common and when prescribing for people who are on various other medications for other health issues.
I started a three day course of nitrofurantion and took my last one last night , never felt so ill in all my life , had severe chills to the point of teeth chattering freez ing , followed by fever, vomiting, dont want food but even the small amount I take because you shouldn't take on empty stomach I bring up after several hours , I have severe abdominal and back pain, no energy want to keep drifting of into a sleep, ive developed a dry cough and sore chest , wokecup this morning my eyes are yellow , and if nothing else I have drunk gallons as the thirst been really bad my gp after twenty four hours told me to stay on these , now I have all these symptoms to contend with which other than a mild uti which I dont usually suffer, dont know how long im going to be like this and cant get answers, any help please ,
Tomei 1 cps. e quase fui parar no 'Socorro'.
Google Translate (may not be 100% accurate):
No doubt! I agree when they say that 'certain doctors' seem to be inadvertently 'prescribing' any substance to the elderly, who already have many other health problems, and already make use of a wide variety of 'active principles' as if they were prescribing, for 'young and healthy' people. Duloxetine, is a good example. They have been referred to 'my mother', who is 83 years old, and takes 4 or 5 types of medicines, considered 'strong'. Luckily he did not, otherwise I do not think he would have 'survived'. I took 1 cps. and I almost went to 'Socorro'. Intense tachycardia, and 'bruce lee' effect (photographic images), instead of the 'walk of sight', which is fundamental, even to be able to 'think'. Spooky. Everything you 'see', look like 'photos', one by one, within the environment in which you are. And to think that there are still people who think 'bruce lee effect', nice. They should have 'coconut water' on the head instead of neurons. What are 'regulatory agencies' of 'pharmacological' substances doing? Why do not they take 'highly toxic' substances, such as Duloxetine and Paroxetine, from the pharmacy shelves? Are you more concerned with 'addictive' substances than the potentially 'hepatotoxic' and cardiotoxic to the extreme?
I took one nitrofurantoin over 24 hours ago and am still so itchy and rashy! The symptoms started to come on about an hour or two after I took the pill for my uti infection and I could feel my lips starting to swell and was getting very rashy. I've been having random hive breakouts the last month and notice when I took Benadryl it didn't help and Claritin helped for a few days but I had a racing heart but kept taking it to stop the hives and a few days later I had severe stomach cramps and felt like I was gna puke and hivey and rashy and my face was so swollen for two days!! I even went to emergency but the doctor didn't seem to care... stopped taking Claritin and done some other things.. taking herbal meds, cut out gluten and dairy...occasionally i would take reactin when I felt hives coming on but it didn't effect me like Benadryl or Claritin. I seemed to be doing a bit better but then got a uti (first one ever) so Was prescribed nitrofurantoin and got reaction but it was different then my previous reactions. Was so itchy I couldn't sleep! Even the palms of my hands and soles of my feet! And my face was getting more and more swollen! So horrible. I don't know if this is the medicine or if my body is just freaking out right now but it's very frustrating. I'm also a very fit active healthy person so having to deal with this is all very new for me and I don't know what to do! I did take a steroid pill that they prescribed me at emergency last week because swelling was so bad and I took another one today after seeing the doctor but I don't like to take those... I was prescribed another uti medicine but was going to wait a few days for my body to calm down. Anyways still very itchy and rashy and haven't taken this pill for over 24hrs. When will it end?!
I have just started taking Nitrofurantoin for a kidney infection.
I'm just wondering how long it may take for the side effects to start?
I have been taking 100mg of nitrofurantoin and I stopped after three days because my doctor said I didn't have to take it all but I'm nauseated every night for 5 days. Is this because of the medicine? I'm only nauseated at night and it's the 5th day.
I'd like to discuss nitrofurantoin with others who suffer from this antibiotic and need further information. I had some bad side effects.
I'm taking it twice a day and usually the second dose of the day I hear squealing or bird chirping too...I was super confused as to why I heard bird chirping in my brain. But nice to know I'm not alone. I want to maybe say it has something to do with blood pressure but I don't know how.
I have taken one dose of nitrofurantoin and soon after the palm of my hands began to itch. I am allergic to sulfa drugs. Is there sulfa in this drug?
I have had only one dose of Macrodantin a nitofurantoin. Please excuse any errors that I may make as I am writing this late at night. I knew that something was not right as each day I try to endure the main, weakness, and debilatating process my body is going through. Information regarding adverse reaction to the medicine nitro. was very scarcel I pulled up the word poison as that is exactly as it feels like,
I have screamed with pain, muscles that felt as they were being ripped.
I've had a UTI for over four weeks and tried 3 different antibiotics. The last was Nitrofurantoin for five days then a further three as the UTI still persisted. I had to give up on day 3 of the second round as I felt so sick, giddy, and pressure down the left side of my neck and behind my left eye. So bad that I thought I was having a stroke. The next morning I woke to a day of chronic diarrhea, intense tiredness and persistent nausea. The following day I took anti-diarrhea medication as I couldn't cope with another day of diarrhea. Now left with nausea, lower abdominal pain, flatulence, and no desire to eat. This is an antibiotic that I won't be taking again. I've yet to see a Urologist to find out what to do next. Note: if you're drug sensitive, this is not the right drug for you. The cure is way worse than the initial complaint. I felt as if I had been poisoned!
I have broken out in a red rash plus swollen eyes and higher blood pressure while on the last day of taking nitrofurantoin. What should I do now if anything? Does nitrofurantoin contain penicillin?
I've taken two courses of Nitrofurantoin and my anxiety is so bad. Has anyone else suffered from this? I've been finished for 10 days and am finding it very hard to function due to crying, fear, etc...
Re: Emma (# 8)
Mine symptoms started the first day. The first pill the next day the bottom of my feet were itching so badly. Then my arms and every other part of my body was affected.
Re: Faisal (# 10)
Been on this med for 2 days now. My eyes are on fire. I look stoned. My vision is blurry. Is this from the meds?
I've been a person who has had to live with pain from HEAD to TOE! (I was abused). I even tried to stay off pain meds. I'm 60 years old and still have severe pain. I am too old to see a chiro. I don't want to take meds that can hurt my organs at my age!!
Has anyone had sores in their mouth?
