Hi, my dr prescribed this for me for anxiety. At first I was hesitant because I read about the bad side effects you can get (brain zap, uncontrollable movements, etc) but I have finally decided to try it. He said start off 5mg 2x a day. My anxiety mostly presents itself with racing heart, palpitations, tightness in chest. Does buspar help calm these things down? I am also on Xanax, which helps a great deal, but I am hoping this i can take in the day time to help ease my symptoms. I just am scared of the side effects. Any experience would help. Thanks!

Yes, it can help with those symptoms, but the only way to see if it will work for you is by trying it. For some people, it is better than Xanax, or other benzodiazepines, because you take it all the time to help keep symptoms under control, rather than waiting for an anxiety attack to occur and then taking something.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, nervousness and blurred vision.

What other side effects concern you? Maybe those can be addressed to help you more.

Most of them are transient and will go away after your body gets used to the medication, which usually takes about 4 to 5 weeks.
