New User To Topiramate 25mg 2xs Daily/migrains
UpdatedI am 37 yr old female, and have been having severe headaches since I was about 22-23yrs old. The drs have tried sevral different medications, and while some seem to work for a bit, and others not at all. I am tired of having these bad migrains as it interupts my daily activities. I have had a migraine that lasted just about 3 days, couldnt figure out what was wrong and why am I getting them so much. I finally saw a dr that i was very comfortable with, and she first tried me on firocet, had the generic version, and was ok at first but started to get worse. I was told to take those1 every four (4) hours as needed. sadly it came to the point where I needed to take every four hours. So I called my dr back, and she is trying me on this medication, 25mg twice a day for one week and then up it to 50mg twice a day. I am a little scared as the side effects. I know everyone is different and react differently to medications, but i am curious as to what others think that are on this topiramate and how are you doing, and what side effects are you getting and how long befor they go away? I have anxiety as well, but am not taking any other medications now except nexium/omeprazole 40mg capsules once daily, sometimes twice when its bad enough. Any thoughts or ideas would be great help. As far as the weight loss i keep hearing about, i will admit im a little overweight, im 5'3 and 179, so no complaints if that happens, but still young enough where i do not want to lose my hair either...bad enough starting to turn grey in spots, lol.
Thanks for all your feedback and advice ahead of time.

I forgot to add to my own post, sorry, I have not seen the neurologist yet,but scheduled another appoinment in four weeks for a follow up for this medicine, and will get a refferal then. Should I wait?
Hi zzkittenzz,
If you're looking for more information on personal experiences, I would highly recommend taking a look at some of the other discussion threads on here relating to this medication (under the brand name topamax and topiramate). Hopefully the link I'm posting below will be of help in that regard:

Have you ever figured out what it was that has been causing these migraines (i.e. stress, anxiety, racing thoughts, insomnia, certain food allergies, etc, etc)?
As to when you should schedule your neurologist appointment, I think that decision is best left up to you and your intuition. Maybe in the meantime you can look into natural remedies so you're not totally reliant on pharmacies & having to fill this medication every month.
Thank you for your feedback. I started my first dose and no real side effects except the tingling in my hands and feet. After all these years I still have not been able to pin point what exactly is causing these migraines. Today for example, I've had a severe migraine for 28hrs and nothing was helping, I finally went to the urgent care and I feel 100% better. They prescribed a medicine, like the shot they gave me, starts with a k, sorry not at home to read the bottle, as I am using my phone. Besides the point...lol..I do know a lot of them start from stress, and I've tried to elevate the stress around me. I stay away from negative people bc I feel their pain and sorrows butsame time adds stress to me. I was ddiagnosed with aniexty couple years ago and take dizapam, but haven't been needing it as I am trying different things. However, these darn headaches are kicking my butt....:( will take my second dose in a few minutes as I'm on pacific time and about to go to bed...so I guess I will see in the morning. I was hoping for some other feedback too. Yes, I have read other threads here, but sadly none are current. I like to stay up to date, if you see or know any other threads please send me the links.as I'm open to hear and listen. I am scheduled to see the neurology next month as its the earliest to get in. The urgent care Dr suggests I go in as soon as possible to get this underway. It has a dramatic impact on my daily living and my marriage, but thankfully he is very understanding and tries to help any way he can. Again thanks for your post, I greatly appreciate it.
suffering from migraines for years and tried everything, the neurologist prescribed toplep/topamax. I didn't experience any side effects at first and still had migraines. around 2 months after taking 50mg per day (25mg morning and night) I started feeling faint, had low blood pressure, stomach pains and acid reflux, transient nausea and feeling as if I was not 'really here' as if I was not part of 'reality'. this is such a weird feeling. I reduced my dosage to 25mg per day as per my naturopathist. to cut a long story short, I feel awful not using it and awful whist using it. I decided to quit cold turkey as i had had forgotten to take it 3 days in a row. could someone please tell me what are the consequences of stopping treatment without weaning myself off it? I do not have the funds available to visit my neurologist. it has been about 6 days now and I still feel the same... aweful.
Just a update to my original post. I was told to increase the topiramate from 25mg twice a day to 50mg a day, and since I have, these are the side effects I've seen, loss of appetite, fogginess, forgetfulness, loss of taste, more joint/nerve pain( which I was already having issues with, with my back and neck) just getting a lot worse, sleeplessness, and my mood well I guess that's a whole different story. I finally got a hold of Dr and asked to be weaned off this medication because to me the cons out weigh the pros and feel it is not for me and so she referred me to a neurologist. I seen them today. I took my first 50 mg dose and hopefully something can be done. I am being told several different things about stopping this medication cold turkey as its not a good idea. But if you are only taking it for migrain prevention you should not get seizures, but if u take it for seizures then I can see you may get one, so I do not know. I will see what the neurologist says this morning. I went for my regular blood work follow up and since being on this bad drug it has also lowered my vit d and b 12 and also calcium.....so it def is not a drug for me. Oh, not to mention more hair seems to be coming out when I brush it.....good luck to everyone who is on it and hopefully you can find relief from bad migraines.
I would like to know how long do you have to take topamax before you should stop it
