New Subutex Laws (Page 9) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI went to see my doctor this week and he told me that the FDA and the DEA had passed a new law for prescribing Subutex. As of July 1st 2015 Subutex can only be given to pregnant woman or to someone with documentation saying they can't take Suboxone. If you don't have that you will be put on Suboxone.
At my doctors, its a three year program. Though I take them for pain management now...at first was due to addition. Again, I take subutex, not suboxon.. Don't know if this makes a difference.
Peace
Mary , if you're being prescribed subutex for drug addiction treatment, but you take it for pain management, when they find out they won't treat you any longer and no other dr will treat you for pain because you have a history of being treated for addiction.
BL...Not true! In my case
Now, this is something my doctor and I discuss only. He has told me many times that this will help in your pain management. So, if you mean is it legal or if the government get wind that I'm using for pain management.. Don't know, is this what you mean? But, yes..my doctor knows I'm using for pain management. I have told him many times I don't ever want to have to go back on pain medication. Hydro's etc.
Thanks..Mary
BL,
I am concerned for the future where I'm concerned. Not sure what I will do after the 3 years is up. What does happen in this case? I have no clue!
July 1st it changes..nationwide.
Mary, if your dr is treating you for drug addiction although he knows that you're taking it for pain management, he is not doing you any favors. When the three years are up, you won't be able to find a dr that will treat you for your pain because you have a history of addiction. It is highly doubtful that the dr that is treating you now will continue treating you in the same manner when the 3 years are up for the same reason. Even if he does, when the time comes and he moves, retires, or decides that he no longer wants to do it, you won't be able to find anyone that will manage your pain. So like I said, your current dr isn't doing you any favors.
Mary, you also need to keep in mind that he hasn't written it in your medical records that you're taking it for pain management. If he knows that you're taking it for pain management and not addiction, then he shouldn't be treating you for addiction.
Yes..this is true..and its going to be nationwide july first......
Is this going to affect any other pm. meds?
Its true my doc in ohio gave me the news last week...nationwide he told me.
not true, you can still IV suboxone in all forms..but as of 2/22/16 there is a new subutex mylan put out that has something in it that makes you feel " cotton fever" like withdrawal ..thats it but suboxone doesnt do it at all. All the naloxone does is put a ceiling or cap on how "high" you feel..not that it makes pple high just gives me more energy the more i take.I was on the origional subozone for 2 years and have been on subutex for the last 7 years..before all this, I was on and off pain pills like oxycontin and fetynol for 9 years. I couldnt keep an job or stay in school..Since i got on subutex i have a degree, a little girl, 2 vehicles a home and i am happy and content..im scared that if they take this away when im not ready i will lose everything..I know people that were on it for 2 years and were sick and withdrwaling for 7 months after they got off of it.
I understand what your saying BL...I was taking up to 20 pk's a day off and on for years. Last two years, daily. I'm sure it's for addition, in my mind at this point I would like to think other wise. I know if I wouldn't have this medicine, I would still be using. So, yes..your correct. The Scarry thing is what do I do in a few years? Where do people go because my pain is real and it concerns me. I'm really stupid when it come to all this stuff and the rules, laws etc. But for my future..I'm truly concerned! Thanks BL for all your input.. I probably need to watch whatbi say to my doctor.SOMEWHAT. I'm honest and truthful with him, but ibdont want to jeopardise his practice either.
Mary
Hey, BL. One more question then I will leave ya alone..lol
I know nothing about withdraws with subutex..If I were to stop taking, are they worse then pain meds? Even if I ween down to half a day..if I stop, will I be in bad shape? Do you know? Thanks again for your help and your understanding.
Mary
Hi BL,
When I first started to see my doctor I was a pain pill addict. I was taking 15 to 20 pk's a day. For 2 month's I searched everywhere for help not knowing where to turn. I over heard someone talk about this program we have in our town for people like me struggling etc, I had a heart to heart. Anyway, I went to the program then was referred to my doc. So now, about a year later I'm clean and haven't had one PK!
Now to today...I feel I could stop the subutex and spoke to the dr about but then I would be right back to taking pk's because my pain is real. This medicine does help tremendously with my pain. He said that it will help with pain and good to stay on...also, he knows or may be afraid I would go back to pk's if I stopped the subs. My bottle just tells me how much to take daily..nothing on there for what reason. My doctor is a great doc, I know he is looking out for my best interests. Again, I have spoke to him about the future, and my problems...he said this is a good medician for pain control as well. HONESTLY, if I were to stop, I would be in my bed 80% of the day because I have such bad back pain. I'm not one to live like that. Its a vicious circle I sapose.
Mary, if there is a law in your state that says only non pregnant women and those that are allergic to Suboxone with documentation to prove it can be prescribed Subutex, there is nothing that your dr or anyone can do about it. A person doesn't stop being an addict because they have pain. If you were receiving low dose Subutex for the treatment of pain, you could go to any dr. When Subutex is used for the treatment of pain, it is given in a much lower dose than it is given for addiction. Suboxone probably does help with your pain, but that is not why you're being prescribe it.
A dr will not want to treat you for chronic pain because you have a history of drug addiction.
Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone knows if the law is changing on any other schedule 2 meds? My PM Dr. A few months back lowered my dose from 5 8mg. diludid a day and morphine 60mg. twice a day to 4 8mg.diludid, & lowered my morph's from the 60mg. to 30mg. twice daily the same month. I thought that was a pretty big reduction. He told me the FDA & DEA didn't want that much prescribed. He didn't say anything about it being a law. I can get by on 4 diludid a day, but the morph's, I would really feel a lot better back on the 60mg. I keep asking him to put me back on the 60's, he tell's me the FDA doesn't want that, but like I said, never said anything about it being law. I think the law has all the Dr's. scared of loosing their license. I've been going to PM. Dr. since 2002. Before that my PCP had me on lots of percs. I suffer from several conditions, and have been through several surgeries. I pay $200 a month just for the Dr visit every month plus the cost of scripts just to maintain somewhat of a quality of life. Is anybody else experiencing this?
Tim, The FDA came out with Guidelines a few years ago that state 120 mg Morphine/!20 Morphine Equivalent Daily. It isn't law, but almost all of the drs are going by it now.
Tim, I have heard PCPs are under pressure to lower narcotic pain meds. Docs do need to revisit narcotic dosages and other drugs like zyprexa, risperdal, and even benzos every 3 months or so, to make sure their patients are stable and not abusing. However, no one knows your pain like you do. I encourage you to have a talk with your pcp. The FDA and DEA do get involved on a grand scale. Good luck to you.
Lizzie, few drs prescribe opiates and benzos any longer. Drs know that they can't continue to increse pain meds past a certain point. A lot of pain drs are telling their patients that they have to do what they can do to keep their pain managable. Things like keeping your weight down, seeing a pain psychologist, altering your life style, etc. Tim's dr isn't goiing to increase his pain meds and it is highly doubtful that he could find another dr that will either. If he was still exceeding the 120 mg daily limit, it is highly doubtful he could even find a dr that would take him as a patient.
MARY: The withdrawals from all opioids are pretty similar. Methadone, oxys, subutex etc. The differences are just duration and intensity. But the usual: pain, cramps, restlessness/insomnia, diarrhea, nausea....just generally feeling HORRIBLE. With methadone and suboxone, the main withdrawals come on a little slower and last a little longer. But if you are familiar with the withdrawal symptoms of opioids in general, then you already know.
