New Subutex Laws (Page 3)

Updated

I went to see my doctor this week and he told me that the FDA and the DEA had passed a new law for prescribing Subutex. As of July 1st 2015 Subutex can only be given to pregnant woman or to someone with documentation saying they can't take Suboxone. If you don't have that you will be put on Suboxone.

I was talking about the POST ACUTE WITHDRAWAL SYNDROME that many opiate addicts experience, not the actual DETOX. of course during detox for alcohol, there should be some sort of benzos given. and i also understand that a person can die from extreme alcohol withdrawal. it was always alcohol, benzo and barbiturate withdrawal that could kill you. not opiate withdrawal. we now know that extreme opiate withdrawal can kill a person, mainly because of it exacerbating other pre-existing conditions. for example, check out "ben, diary of a opiate addict" on youtube. the guy went into such sudden, extreme opiate withdrawal that he died of a brain aneurism that was brought on by the opiate withdrawal. if a person has a heart condition, high blood pressure, seizure disorders, etc, sudden extreme opiate withdrawal can kill them. but back to my main point....

personally, i DO think severe or long-term alcoholics would greatly be helped by a small dose of benzos. but as i was saying, the opiate-addicted brain stops producing natural endorphins. the addict may be through the ACUTE stage of withdrawal/detox, but they can go months and even years without feeling "right" or "normal". this is a huge part of why opiate addiction has such a high recidivism/relapse rate. so i was talking about long term, PAWS symptoms, not detox. anyone who is physically addicted to alcohol, benzos or barbiturates MUST detox in a medical setting or risk seizures and even death.

Or suicide. You raise some very valid points. I'm not a pharmacologist or a substance abuse counselor. Im a microbiologist. Everything I know about substance abuse I learned from an opiate addict. Many of them are more informed about abuse and withdrawal and addictive drugs than physicians. Thanks for your input. I learned.

Wow, just the worlds foremost authority on EVERYTHTING, huh? real up on what "most addicts" do and don't do, people "can't" overdose on this or that, they should put coke back in the coca cola....are you freaking serious? I think you like to hear yourself type. you got so far off of the subject, its a wonder i stayed awake that long. I love the "and NO, I'm not a teacher...." trust me dude, NO ONE here thinks you are a "teacher".

I had heard rumors about the new law but didn't believe it until I went to the doctor. I have been on subutex for 3 years and 3 months away from completing my program. I am far enough along so it will not be as hard for me, but feel really bad for the newer patients. Suboxone is far more expensive than subutex, the naxolone is hard on the body and the taste is one of the most disgusting things imaginable. It will completely ruin citrus for the patients. This is entirely based on money...is it just me or does someone have a monopoly on the opiate addiction market?

If you are so educated, it seems like you would have enough sense to know that addiction is an illness....He's not an addict because he enjoys it or because he doesn't have motivation to do better in life. NO ONE wants to be an addict. The only choice you have as an addict is to get help...which he seems to be doing. You're obviously very judgmental on a subject you know nothing about.

Lol, your comments don't bother me. I just can't believe how stupid you really are....considering that you are in the medical field.

Yes it is true and the law is stated in Tennessee SB871.n Just Google it. Also, it also prohibits doctors from prescribing anything containing buprenorphine for anything other than opiate withdrawal. My doctor was prescrobing it to me for chronic pain. 8mg a day for a little over a year now, and as of July 1. 2015 he just cut me completely off of it and said that there was nothing he could do, not even help me wean down. Also, I could not get it from another doctor because I had never taken it for opiate addiction...so that was a real shocker to me. I don't know what I am going to do. I just have a few left and I have heard horror stories about the withdrawals from buprenorphine!! If anyone can advise me on how to get through this easier, please do

Jim, it seems to me you are a little bit uninformed when it comes to addiction. I suggest you do some research on it. You are condemning people for something that you do not understand at all. I don't know what has happened in your life that makes you have such a disdain for people with addiction. Hopefully you will be able to understand the reason for what appears to be hatred and correct it. There is a very good pod cast called STUFF THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW. There is a very good episode on the subject. Do youreld a favor and check it out. Maybe you will get out if the "Grow be a man" attitude.

Hi I seen your post. I am trying to do research on the new law that has passed. You sound like your very familier with the new law and you have done your research. So this is my question, I have been on Subutex for 8 months bc I was pregnant. I recently had the baby as of June 15th 2015. They just switched me to zubzolv. It has naloxone in it and I heard when your breastfeeding the baby gets a portion of it and the baby can not take naloxone. The baby is only a month old so I am still breastfeeding. So, what do you think the new law says about that? I've had pharmacy look up the new law and tell me I am still supposed to be on the subutex since I am breastfeeding and also a lot of different people and a couple doctors. I want to make sure I am right about it before I threaten my doctor with my imaginary lawyer. LOL!! I think this is a bunch of bull. So can you please help me with this. Or if you can't help me do you know who else I can contact about it?

Actually u are wrong they are NOT the same thing. You should not speak when u are uneducated on the subject.

Suboxone saved my life !! I can WORK and function on them and live life normally. So I would be doing dope still not working g and doing crimes to survive. Got on these and wala I can work and live life and play with my kid and be happy and she has a wayyy better life as I am clean now and not druged up so bad I'm nodin 24/7.

Suboxone or dope and being high I choose suboxone and a clean life of work and family. You have no clue what u are talking about, this medicine is amazing and the only thing that fixed my life and made me WORK.

Please next time don't speak as u r uneducated on this.

Shelley you really need to talk to your doctor about this. As long as you are pregnant or breastfeeding you should be on subutex because you do pass the naloxone through your breast milk. My wife and I had a baby about two years ago and they kept her on subutex while she was breastfeeding. She is currently pregnant and her doctor told her he will keep her on subutex this time false for as long as she is breastfeeding.

Jim im new on here. But Im guessing you don't do drugs or on suboxone by the way your talking calling people druggies. So why are you even on this site? That's no way to talk to people. Especially if you have no idea what your talking about. Since apparently your not on drugs or anything. But that's all I wanted to say. Your post just really bothered me; had to speak my mind...

Jim.....How dare you criticize these people who are trying to get off drugs. you ask why they don't research BP meds, etc. Because they are addicts trying to find support on this thread. why are you on here? Let me guess, you were bullied in grade school, never quite made the grade in school or work. you are intimidated by mentally strong people and now you are a bully because you don't like yourself. Newsflash.......most of us don't like you either! take your rude mouth and arrogant, unknowledgeable self and try a place where you can understand what people are saying. BTW.....you had absolutely NO business calling Shelly a druggie. Enjoy your day....or don't.

Mike here's the thing. My doctor refuses to put me back on the subutex. He says because the new law states that if you are not pregnant you can no longer take subutex. Regardless of breastfeeding mother's. He said that my insurance won't cover the subutex now that I've had the baby. And I called my Insurance company and proved him wrong. 2 different people told me the same thing. That I qualify for the subutex for 6 months after I had the baby. They also said there was never a new law stating if you are breastfeeding to change someone to suboxone.. If any laws had changed as far as that goes they would be the first to know. They said its been the same for years. And so I called my doctor and talked to him about what my Insurance company said he basically called me a lier and then he called them to find out if I was lying and put a wrench in it. Now there telling me I don't qualify sense he called. I don't get it...I don't know what to do about this. so now he's kicking me out for no reason and making me find another doctor and giving me a month supply of the suboxone. He is such a prick. A found a doc but most of them don't take Insurance. And they want 425 a month. Or they don't prescribe subutex. I'm soooo lost. I don't know what to do. I've also read the zubsolv and suboxone manufacturer website about breastfeeding and it says DO NOT.... But just wan't to say thanks for getting back to me.
