I take Klor-Con M20 x2 for potassium loss, spironolact 25mg a duretic for blood pressure, was on atacand for blood pressure now changed to Micardis 80mg for blood pressure and synthroid 88mg for thyroid. Had one side of thyroid removed in 2006, hysterectomy in 2004 and have nothing but health issures. Low potassium currently, calcium deficency in the past, vit D very very low in the past, before hyster extremely deficent in folic acid. Have had tooth loss, bone loss, hair loss , cataracts, psorisis, I am a 51 year old female. My chief concern now is a breast mass that I go today to find out the results and I continue to wake with a tightness in the throat, shoulders and sometimes chest area. The base of my skull where my head joins my back of neck hurts and I feel like I am gasping when I wake. My arms some times are cramped when waking. Also it feels like I am clinching my teeth because my jaws hurt along with my teeth when I wake. This wakes me. I have a hard time getting to sleep also. This is very frightening because I don't want whatever it is to damage my heart. I also get indigestion at night which I never had before. I get very sleepy early afternoon and can hardly stay awake. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My doc is wonderful but I think he is missing something.I feel at 51 I should not be falling apart.

I really wish I had read this post sooner and I sincerely hope this woman is okay and discovered what her problem was and how to solve it.

Something like the tooth/jaw clenching may have been due to just stress, or perhaps TMJ, which can easily manifest and get worse when someone is stressed and a dentist would have to be consulted to confirm that.

The headache, throat tightness, cramping and most other symptoms could be due to either being dehydrated, or to being low in potassium. Even a combination of the two is possible, since dehydration commonly causes someone to be low in potassium.

I am only posting theories, because a doctor would have to confirm such things, but the diuretic may have been just contributing to the problem.

I've been there, however, and these are very similar to the symptoms I was having when my potassium dropped severely low and I was extremely dehydrated from being on doses of diuretics that were far too high for me. We actually had to take my Spironolactone down to an occasional, take as needed medication and, even then, I can only take half of one of the 25mg tablets.

Spironolactone is great, since it is potassium sparing, but if someone isn't actually carrying excess fluid, then even the mildest diuretic may be too much. Especially if they haven't been informed to make sure that they take in at least 64ounces of fluid daily, while taking it.

There may be some health conditions where the fluid needs to be lower, but a person's doctor should keep them informed of any changes they need to make to their fluid intake and they should follow those directives.
