Quite a few years ago, when I was in the army, I came down with a very bad case of the flu. I went to the med bay and they gave me a packet of meds with 6 doses and told me to take one every 4 hours. 24 hours later I was finished with the pack and whatever kind of meds I had taken had burned the flu right out of my system. At first I thought it was a Z Pack but I have since learned that Z Packs don't work on cold or flu. Can anybody tell me or give me an idea as to what kind of medicine I was given?

Hello, Gabriel! How are you?

It was likely an antiviral, since the flu is caused by a virus, so some of them used to be prescribed to help knock it out of someone's system.

However, taking them too frequently for too long, such as some med students would do, could result in overdose toxicity, and there was no treatment, thus it often result in death. There actually was an old episode of House that covered this, but it's been so long since I saw it that I don't remember the name of the episode, or the year. While they often disguise the real names of the drugs used, and the amount taken, the rest of the details are often accurate and based on real events/medical cases. (Not all, though.) So, it was removed from the general prescription drug market, for such use.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of most antivirals as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain, and diarrhea.

Does anyone else know what the name of the medication was/is?
