Naltrexone Side Effects

Recently at my request my doctor gave me naltrexone to stop alcohol cravings although he admitted he didn't know much about it. I am pretty much an every night drinker, self medication, 4-5 strong drinks per night to ease anxiety. What scares me is the side effects I have been hearing about on different forums about naltrexone. I had a liver panel in late September which came out fine but the doctor told me to be very cautious. I can't afford to miss work and be down and out for any length of time. He prescribed me 25mg per day which I am starting next week after a 3 day drying out period. Any suggestions or opinions would be helpful.

Hello, Mike! How are you? Kudos to you for realizing that you need to stop the heavy drinking and get help. That takes a lot of guts.

Such heavy alcohol use is almost certain to lead to death, in one way or another, but side effects are only a possibility experienced by a very small percentage of the people that take any given medication. Thus, there is a far greater risk if you continue drinking, than if you take the Naltrexone to stop.

The FDA lists the most common side effects as possibly including nausea, constipation, stomach cramps, headache and joint/muscle pain.

Side effects are also transient, they tend to improve over time, as your body adjusts to a medication and eventually go away entirely, while liver failure is permanent.

Are there any other concerns or side effects that I can address to help you?
