Naloxone / Oxycodone / Suboxone (Top voted first)
UpdatedI can’t seem to find an answer. If oxycodone now has naloxone in it so that there isn’t an euphoric high, isn’t that the same as the Suboxone? Suboxone has naloxone in it but it must also have the narcotic also, otherwise how would it keep people from going into full blown withdrawals? The new pain pills are the SAME EXACT thing, they stop the withdrawals but do nothing for the pain? So aren’t we as the consumer/patient being misinformed as to the true nature of the new formulated pain pills? I’m in pain but oh thank you I still have narcotics in my blood. Naloxone stomps on the opioid, so what’s the sense??? Wouldn’t it be better to know the truth? Oh and by the way, UFOs exist lol. Loooking for the truth.

Big Red Balloon,
From what I can read on the NIH website, you are talking about a new specific type of oxycodone and nalaxone combination pill. These pills are called Targiniq ER manufactured by Purdue Pharma LP.
A few things to point out here, you are correct in thinking that nalaxone is there to cause your body to metabolize the oxycodone which makes the drug non effective. What you may not have read is that the reason the Targiniq ER is so unique is that the nalaxone ingredient does not become active unless the pill is crushed or dissolved. The reason for this is to deter drug abuse, primarily individuals who crush and snort the drug or try to dissolve and inject the drug. So long as you orally administer the pill as intended the nalaxone does not become active and the pill should work as intended.
I hope this information helps.
Re: Kevin (# 1)
Kevin, I thank you for taking the time to write a response to my questions. I get the whole concept of naloxone being used to stop this opioid epidemic. My problem is, I don’t believe that naloxone can magically decide if it’s being dissolved either outside the body or inside, don’t all pills consumed orally, dissolve??? So putting this magic opioid binder into the pills that chronic plain patients consume and informing them that naloxone knows the difference between a drug addict and a chronic pain patient has me quite bewildered, almost to the point that I can’t help to feel like this is just another lie being fed to the people who once believed in “we have your best interests". Save the addict kill the chronic pain patients, great.
Now isn’t that stupid! Who and why are they doing such an idiotic thing? Sometimes I wonder about our medical professionals. Dumbfounded.
Re: Kevin (# 1)
If u need pain medicine and something to get u off of an opioid etc then methadone is the answer. It changed my life.
I can try and give you my skinny on the subject.
From wikipedia:
"Papaver bracteatum: This species is grown to produce thebaine, which is commercially converted to codeine and semi-synthetic opiates. Papaver bracteatum does not contain morphine, codeine or any other narcotic alkaloids in significant amounts. Oripavine has been reported in minute traces but would not exert a relevant activity."
From "one of those doctors...''
Naltrexol: a Veterinary medication to help heroin addicts when other barbituates have been exhausted.
Result: Immediate withdrawal and sensitization of opioid receptors.
Recommended used: to be used on _caged_ animals only.
"Can’t seem to find an answer. If oxycodone now has naloxone in it so that there isn’t a euphoric high, isn’t that the same as the Suboxone?''
IMHO (in my humble opinion) - naloxone seems to make about as much sense as altered ECT.
"The new pain pills are the SAME EXACT thing, they stop the withdrawals but do nothing for the pain?''
I am unfortunately not aware of any new pain medication. I would love to see a modulated pain reliever that is not a complete agonist, something more along the lines of benzodiazepine-type action. I doubt this will happen anytime soon, although I believe it is just around the corner. I often hear that those opiate users are abusing benzodiazepines; I think they may be on the right path. Maybe we should stop the name calling and start listening...
"My problem is, I don’t believe that naloxone can magically decide if it’s being dissolved either outside the body or inside, don’t all pills consumed orally, dissolve???''
Believe me, there is a difference. Not all pills are absorbed PO (although it would seem like they should). B12 is something that pops into my mind.
"naloxone knows the difference between a drug addict and a chronic pain patient has me quite bewildered"
It sounds like you are thinking too hard. :) Some people are in pain and choose to take pain relievers. Just my two cents.
Re: Kevin (# 1)
I think I have read your post ten times and I still gotta say ,,, this just doesn’t add up ,, naloxne is used to stop drug overdoses and deter people from abusing pain pills,, ok fine ,, I get that , but putting it into the pain pills of legitimate pain patients and saying, it doesn’t effect the efficiency of the pills ability to ease pain ,, it just magically knows that it’snot being ingested by a drug abuser and only becomes active by desolving or crushing,,,, ok fine , so Are you saying that saliva and stomach acid don’t desolve naloxne,,,, it needs to be desolved by what ??? Water , water activated naloxne stops the opioid from working ,,, interesting , indeed

It's in your head the naloxone only kicks in if you try to break down the medicine and take it in other ways.
