Naive To Narcotics In Utah And Co/east Coast

As I read through the sometimes heartbreaking threads, I find myself wondering why it is so hard from the Mid-West through the East Coast, to find a physician and or pain mgt DR to prescribe narcotics to us folks, the chronically ill??? So far, and God willing, it has not yet been like that on the West Coast, specifically California. Please shed some light, and better yet, what can I do to help? I could not imagine going through life without the aid and support of not only my pain meds, but my wonderful pain mgmt support team. God bless us all!

There were new regulations put in place last year that restrict why a doctor can prescribe such medications, how much of them they can prescribe and how often they can prescribe them. The only exceptions are for those that are suffering intractable pain from a potentially fatal illness, such as stage 4 cancer.

Someone requiring potent controlled medications on a long-term ongoing basis must see specialists, PCPs can no longer prescribe them.

They are also in play on the west coast, but it seems that the issues the DEA was trying to curb, such as over prescribing and improper prescribing weren't as prevalent here. However, many of the ERs and doctor's offices have had signs up stating that they will not handle pain management and that patients will be referred to specialists.

There have also been many posts regarding pharmacies all over the U.S. questioning prescriptions and refusing to fill many.

It is a very sad state of affairs that have created problems for many with legitimate pain issues. You are very fortunate that you are already seeing good doctors and haven't had to deal with the hassles that have been afflicting so many others.

Unfortunately, I am drawing a blank on ideas of what you could do to help. Doctor's have really had their hands tied and there's nothing that can be done to change that, at present.
