Mylan Mirtazapine Does Not Work
(Newest replies first)

Updated

Has any one else experienced this? I had to start using the Mylan version of Remeron / Mirtazapine and I now get sever leg cramps, headaches and the return of my depression. It’s as though it has NO active ingredient in it. The name brand Remeron puts me to sleep about 15 min after taking it, but the Mylan generic for of Remeron/Mirtazapine does not. I stay awake for hours. I can not afford the name brand remeron at $187.00 a month but I am to afraid if I try to use the Mylan version again the worse will happen. I am kind of between a rock and a hard place over this. But I have switched back and fourth enough times now that I know the Mylan version does not work. I get this from Walgreen’s in IL and I am looking for similar problems. Walgreen’s tell me they will not carry another generic brand. They say Mylan is a trusted company in the generic medication business…???

I function far better on the name brand. I have taken Mylan and my symptoms have gotten worse I have compensated but I would really like the name brand. I know they say generic is the same but it is not. The fillers are different the absorption is different. It isn't just a name brand thing.

My doc just prescribed me this and I was afraid to take it because Ive had bad experiences with medicines like this keeping me awake. I usually take ambien snd it works just fine for me but my pcp doc doesnt want to keep prescribing it. I guesse its a conspiracy among these pharmaceutical companies and doctors

Re: Hamed (# 3) Expand Referenced Message

You are absolutely right. When I was on the Mirtazapine and it worked great but of course they changed it to the generic brand because my plan said it was too expensive and they wouldn't cover it anymore so i had to use the generic and it does NOTHING.Very frustrating.

Aurobind Mirtazapine does not work for me, either. It take hours to fall asleep, but then wake up after an hour and stay awake throughout the night.

I have the same problem, didn't even know there were different brands but when I got my repeat prescription it didn't work, I couldn't sleep. Went back and chemist gave me Aurobindo and it was even worse. Now I don't know what to do. Will go back to chemist probably and try to explain neither of the two latest brands work. Unfortunately I had thrown the box away from my original prescription so I have no idea which brand worked.

I have been taking Mirtazapine 15 mg by TEVA for 3 years and recently my pharmacy switched to a different manufacturer Aurolife Pharma. Their Mirtazapine did not work for me, I was unable to sleep again. I had no idea that there would be such a difference between manufacturer. I life in San Diego and searched many pharmacies to find TEVA again with no luck. Finally my daughter found them stocked in Michigan, where she lives. I am getting the filled there until Teva is again available in San Diego.

I have been taken Mirtazapine by TEVA 15 mg which I cut in half taken every night for insomnia. It has been a lifesaver....no more insomnia from pill 1 and no adverse side effects.n
Can not find TEVA Mirtzapine any longer, was switched to AUROLIFE Mirtazapine which does not work at all. Desperate to find the Teva brand again or a brand that is working as well.

On my last refill I got the brand name for the first time in years and wow, what a difference, none of the other generic manufacturers even come close. I thought aurobindo did but I was wrong. I've been on this drug for 14 years and I've tried all the generic manufacturers. Unfortunately greenstone pharmaceuticals quit making theirs, it wasn't bad. Something is weird about the generics of mirtazapine, they are all so different from each other and nothing like the brand. I've been on many other drugs and haven't noticed such a huge discrepancy between brand and generic, or between different generics, except maybe for Paxil. It's not even like that they feel like different potency, they literally feel like different drugs altogether. I wish I could afford the $150 for brand but it's just too much. Anyone know how I can get the brand name for cheaper?

I've been taking the Aurobindo brand for a few weeks and I think it is more like the brand than any others. I really like it. The Mylan one still helped me sleep and eat but for whatever reason I was so edgy and angry all the time on it. I've been taking mirtazapine for over 10 years and tried almost all the generics as well as brand and I like Aurobindo the best. And I can assure you they're not all the same.

Mylan clonazepam is worthless and I found out the hard way. When I first switched from CVS to Walgreens I got Teva hey no problem. The next month my anxiety not only increased but my sleep went out the window; didn't notice they had switched to Mylan until I put it under tongue in the middle of the night in bed to get back to sleep and noticed they were rounded not flat and they dissolved really quick. The jig was up. I called my son who is an expert on clonazepam and he told me Mylans were worthless, Tevas were OK BUT Sandoz blue 64 were the best I found Safeway has them and switched. What a difference. The FDA WILL tell you the bioavailability must be the same but this is the second time I have been burned by ExpressScripts. They buy the cheapest s*** and they don't care that 3 months later you finally figure out why stress at work is bugging you and your sleep has gone out the window. My MD told me that Mylan is the largest manufacturer of generics in USA. I get brand name if poss on all my psyche meds and who knows what the hell is going on with my other meds I have know way of knowing but the anxiolytics I can feel the difference so I can self monitor. The FDA cannot be trusted because I had the same bad experience with Alprazolam

It sounds like the consensus is that mylan is the worst mirtazapine. I have been on remeron for 10 years. I notice differences between brand and all the different generics, none seem to work the same. Lately I've been taking the mylan and it does put me right to sleep and helps with my appetite which is good for me, but the one thing about mylan is I feel really cranky and irritable during the day and my anxiety is higher than any of the others too. It's weird, they're all like slightly different meds. The brand is good but keeps me too sleepy all during the next day. The watson one didn't seem to work very well. The teva one for me was OK but my leg muscles felt numb and wobbly after awhile on it, it was really strange. I haven't tried the Aurobindo one yet but I think I might on my next refill since the mylan one I've been taking is making me irritable, even having chest pains the next day at times. Anyone who tells you there's not a difference between brand and generic or differences between all the generics just hasn't had the experience of being on a psych med long term where even slight differences can be very pronounced.

As a fellow depressive: for heaven's sake, check out the many, many antidepressants available. If your psychiatrist can't or won't help you, time to find another psychiatrist! Best to you.

For peoples information, Greenstone is the generic arm of Pfizer. Look at their drugs, they are all Pfizer discovered.

I'd like to confirm that Mylan is an inferior product. Been taking mirtazapine for 7+ years, and always did OK with teva or aurobindo. the Aurobindo 30mgs work fine for me, i take one and a half. Recently I got a new script and the pharmacy gave me mylan 45mg. Five days later, I've been feeling like s*** and wondered if it's the change to Mylan.. I take other meds and nothing else has changed but the mirtazapine manufacturer. Guess it's true that such variation exists - where if Aurobindo isn't as good as brand name Remeron, it's still OK by me, and yet this Mylan is crap.

I know mirtazapine is chiral and has 2 steriosomers. The S- being more potent than the R-. Separation of chiral isomers is among the most difficult tasks in chemistry, so my guess is that the ratio of S:R enantiomers is what causes this discrepancy. The FDA prob only tests for potency, and they see 30mg of racemic mirtazapine present in a 30mg pill, not bothering to check the S:R ratio of enantiomers

So I wish to offer this as an explanation for why generic mirtazapines vary so much. And to confirm that mylans are inferior.

I prefer Teva brand. It always worked better for me. Less headaches than Mylan Mirtazapine

I just got the Aurobindo brand of Mirtazapine and it makes me sick. I mean stomach pain, bladder pain, feel like I have the flu, and really depressed. Similar thing happened with Serax brand, generic oxazepam, for sleep. When Teva made it, it worked fine. Then they stopped and I tried 2 other brands. Some weird one made in Viet Nam me sick, had SLS as a filler (which is a soaponification product used in shampoos and soaps and it's not recommended to use anything with SLS), It didn't work and the Sandoz one which was covered in shellac didn't work either. The government should check if there are ANY active ingredients in these generics. I started a petition but it went nowhere.
