A week ago he took his bp at Publix and it was extremely high, 160/97, pulse 115. Has anyone experienced this with their healthy young adult?

One high reading wouldn't not be enough to cause a doctor to prescribe such a medication. It would have also had to have been high in other readings. What were the numbers when he checked it?
If it was high and his doctor has prescribed this, there is no reason to be upset. High blood pressure can be caused by various things, such as high salt intake, even if he eats healthy low fat foods, or heredity.
Getting it under control now is the smart thing to do and will help him live a full, active, long and healthy life. Bringing it down lowers his risk of developing heart disease, heart attack, congestive heart failure or stroke.
Typical side effects to this medication, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain, dry cough and hypotension.
