My Dr Took My Bottle Of Pills From Me And Wrote A Prescription For Another Pain Med
(Newest replies first)

I saw my Dr. yesterday and called him because I was still in pain. He told me to come back and to bring the bottle of medication with me. He took the bottle of pain pills that I had paid for and wrote me a script for a different medication. Can a Dr. actually take someone's pills away from them like that?
No, that is crazy. If u paid for it u keep them in case in the future u need them . But he did that to probably not to be taken by someone else or for his use. These new young doctor aren't so innocent. If he old doctor then he got some issues taking it to discard them him self.
Re: David (# 1)
You got bad advice here. If doctor changes a script in the middle of the prescription period, he is totally within his rights to require you to surrender the previous pills. He can count them and know that you were compliant with that script, and he hasn't allowed you to take both scripts. This is common in pain management. You gave him permission to take your previous meds when you surrendered them. This is good medical practice.
Re: rosa211 (# 4)
If they want your meds they are not your friends
In a word "No" He shouldn't have taken them.
Re: terriba (# 2)
Dang, maybe he's doing this to keep them for himself.
Here is your POSSIBLE options. Take the new script and give up the remaining medication from the previous prescription OR refuse to give up the previous medication to get a new script and just keep the old medication and use it up and THEN get a new script for a different medication. I had something similar happen to me a few years back. The pharmacy or Doctor wrote a script for the wrong miligrams size and rewrote the script and I filled it. The Pharmacy asked for the old script back but I refused as I had paid for it. i offered to return it if they paid me for the unused pills but they refused so I kept it. Keep in mind this was before all of the drama we now go through.
Re: terriba (# 2)
That seems almost like him stealing your meds. I mean they are yours, you paid for them. I would've been pissed.
Re: DrJoeyMDPhD (# 20)
Where did you study for your degrees to become a Doctor/ MDPhD? Because wherever you went literally just took your money and Lord help the patients that you did diagnosis of any kind during your Residency? because I can not fully understand what you meant?eg: " a bite"? I have my degree in Nursing ( Bachelor of Science ) and I would never get on a forum of any topic especially medication and attempt to help someone or even suggest anything. Yes if you really do have a Degree in Medicine please let everyone know what State you are in so they can stay away from your practice.
Re: terriba (# 2)
my cousins doctor did the very same thing I would of went off! He put them In the sharps container I was like it's not like he cant open it after you left and get them out!
Re: Wired (# 14)
Exactly. She should have had a witness. That was not clear. Whether doctor counted remaining pills, whether there was witness.
Or If Doc was taking for his own self.
Then the pharmacy had proof the script was destroyed!!
But If half the script was used then that’s just pull shopping.
Re: Wired68 (# 12)
Yes, under the eyes of the patient and another witness!!!!
And yes they can write u one if it’s not working and you would return it to the pharmacy!!!! Not the doc. The doc can count the meds and relay that’s what you would be returning to pharmacy. But it should be 75% if script. Because why would you keep using if it wasn’t working. Otherwise that’s considered drug seeking behavior!!
But doctors abuse too!!!
Re: David (# 1)
i have gone to the dr once, because i was on 60 mg of adderall and 120 xanax bars, and they put me on 120 2mg klonopin..... i didnt care, and it made me so tired, so half way through the month, after klonopin was too much, i gave the pills back, they couted, i took 8 before i gave em back, and it was perfect they said and still on xanax and adderall . life is great
Re: Mollie (# 56)
Because SHE SAID IT WAS FOR A STRONGER NARCOTIC!!! ??
No he cannot do that. If he wanted you to stop taking them he should have told you to take them back to the pharmacy and they would dispose of them properly or give you a packet that you put in your pill bottle and add water to it so it is safe to dispose of without harming people or animals. But he cannot do that. I would definitely report him.
Re: rosa211 (# 4)
They are not Xanax. They are TEVA original formula Clonazepam. Do not give your friends YOUR MEDS. They are written for you and your condition. And you will need them. If your friends keep taking them then you won’t have them left when you do need them. These are a long acting benzodiazepine. They are mainly used for seizures and anxiety. I take them for seizure disorder and anticipatory anxiety disorder. I’ve been on the same dose for 10 years. The green ones were better than some of the blue generics that have been out there recently. But no they are not the same as Xanax. Xanax works almost immediately why as clean as a pan takes a wild to become active in your system. You also need to take regularly. That way you have a steady amount in your bloodstream.
But please do not share your meds. First of all if you get caught you will get cut off from that prescription. Second of all if something should happen to one of your friends that takes them, you will be held responsible in a court of law. Your doctor has a prescription of pain meds that were originally written for you. He could sell them on the black market or he could be taking them himself. That is so highly illegal and unethical. It would be one thing if you saw him dispose of them in front of you. But I believe you did not see that. If he has a reputation with doing this with patients. Then it sounds and looks like he has a problem. If it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, then it usually is a dock. And in this case it looks like the Dr. is the dog and the doctor has a pain medication problem or addiction.
Re: Coco (# 49)
How do you assume the new script was for a stronger dose? It may have been for a non generic so the doc may have just changed to a a tab from a different drug company ( not pharmacy).
Re: Jdsj (# 38)
Don’t be so sure. The U/A I take at pain management knows the difference between xanax and restoril, for example.
Did he give you something better to help? I have never heard of that... i'd be asking whos paying me back.
A physician can't just "take" your medication, at the same time they don't have to write you a new prescription. Ethically, especially in this day and age, the physician did the right thing. I would have done the exact same thing.
Re: timster (# 19)
I had a similar situation..So I filled my script of a controlled sub. And the brand was one I had never seen before. Needless to say it gave me horrible side effects and I didn’t even want to take my medication it was so bad, I called the pharmacy who said call the doctor and explain. So after doing so I went to my doctors and he asked if I had the meds on me and I said yes sir and handed them to him he then read the took a quick look at the bottle popped it open and poured a handful into his hand and then back into the bottle then immediately wrote me a new prescription, and I filled it that day. Never signed a paper never did anything besides hand my bottle over wich he kept and wrote the new script and I left..
