My Dr Took My Bottle Of Pills From Me And Wrote A Prescription For Another Pain Med (Page 3) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI saw my Dr. yesterday and called him because I was still in pain. He told me to come back and to bring the bottle of medication with me. He took the bottle of pain pills that I had paid for and wrote me a script for a different medication. Can a Dr. actually take someone's pills away from them like that?
Re: David (# 1)
You got bad advice here. If doctor changes a script in the middle of the prescription period, he is totally within his rights to require you to surrender the previous pills. He can count them and know that you were compliant with that script, and he hasn't allowed you to take both scripts. This is common in pain management. You gave him permission to take your previous meds when you surrendered them. This is good medical practice.
I guess you could have declined the new script and kept the pills, but I would bet he wouldn’t give you new pills to add to your old pills.
I’ve brought meds to the doctor before for an “exchange” like that. They always put water in the bottle, close it, shake it, & throw it in the trash in front of me.
It’s super sketchy if the doctor just put them in his drawer.

Oh nonsense!! This thread started 7 years ago before any crisis had been started.
Re: Jenifer (# 11)
I’m sure he was stocking up on benzos cause when you run out it sucks. So he was being smart (not law smart or legally smart) but if he wanted to save half a bottle in case he ran out of xanax too quickly, he could take the ativan to replace it, and if they drug test it just shows up for benzos. BOOM
Re: antman (# 15)
I’m sure any legitimate pain specialist has a check system for the meds taken back. I have never had them ask me to turn in any meds when he changed my RX. Really it wouldn’t be enough to do much harm....
Re: Vic (# 43)
Correction On my comment!
Since January of this yr the system has cracked down on the use of pain pills and and controlled substance and so many others!
Re: Wired (# 14)
Exactly. She should have had a witness. That was not clear. Whether doctor counted remaining pills, whether there was witness.
Or If Doc was taking for his own self.
Then the pharmacy had proof the script was destroyed!!
But If half the script was used then that’s just pull shopping.
Here is your POSSIBLE options. Take the new script and give up the remaining medication from the previous prescription OR refuse to give up the previous medication to get a new script and just keep the old medication and use it up and THEN get a new script for a different medication. I had something similar happen to me a few years back. The pharmacy or Doctor wrote a script for the wrong miligrams size and rewrote the script and I filled it. The Pharmacy asked for the old script back but I refused as I had paid for it. i offered to return it if they paid me for the unused pills but they refused so I kept it. Keep in mind this was before all of the drama we now go through.
Re: terriba (# 2)
Dang, maybe he's doing this to keep them for himself.
Re: rosa211 (# 4)
If they want your meds they are not your friends
No, that is crazy. If u paid for it u keep them in case in the future u need them . But he did that to probably not to be taken by someone else or for his use. These new young doctor aren't so innocent. If he old doctor then he got some issues taking it to discard them him self.
It's required by law for the dr. to destroy the previous pain medication before writing a script for another.
Years ago the same thing happened to me and after talking to several of his patients he was doing this all the time. Come to find out, he was the junkie and that was the way he got his drugs!!! He ended up being sued for botching a spine surgery for 4 million. A well known neurosurgeon who I heard has been practicing in Florida!! Makes me sick!! I will never return any meds unless it may be a sample the office gave me, but if you pay for the rx, they have NO more right than someone on the street to ask for your meds..
Re: David (# 1)
The Dr. should have told you of his intentions. I've done this with my pain management DR. a few times and then writes me a new stronger med. He doesn't want you to have both as you might take together and od.
Re: Mollie (# 42)
Very true and well put Mollie!
Did he give you something better to help? I have never heard of that... i'd be asking whos paying me back.
Re: rosa211 (# 4)
They are not Xanax. They are TEVA original formula Clonazepam. Do not give your friends YOUR MEDS. They are written for you and your condition. And you will need them. If your friends keep taking them then you won’t have them left when you do need them. These are a long acting benzodiazepine. They are mainly used for seizures and anxiety. I take them for seizure disorder and anticipatory anxiety disorder. I’ve been on the same dose for 10 years. The green ones were better than some of the blue generics that have been out there recently. But no they are not the same as Xanax. Xanax works almost immediately why as clean as a pan takes a wild to become active in your system. You also need to take regularly. That way you have a steady amount in your bloodstream.
But please do not share your meds. First of all if you get caught you will get cut off from that prescription. Second of all if something should happen to one of your friends that takes them, you will be held responsible in a court of law. Your doctor has a prescription of pain meds that were originally written for you. He could sell them on the black market or he could be taking them himself. That is so highly illegal and unethical. It would be one thing if you saw him dispose of them in front of you. But I believe you did not see that. If he has a reputation with doing this with patients. Then it sounds and looks like he has a problem. If it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, then it usually is a dock. And in this case it looks like the Dr. is the dog and the doctor has a pain medication problem or addiction.
Re: terriba (# 2)
That seems almost like him stealing your meds. I mean they are yours, you paid for them. I would've been pissed.
In a word "No" He shouldn't have taken them.
Is the little round green pill with TEVA 833 on it similar to Xanax? I am just newly starting on the green TEVA pill and friends been bugging me for my pills because they say they are pretty much Xanax???
