My Doctor Hates Prescribing Painkillers

I slipped a disk 8 years ago. It was the worst pain I've ever felt. Horrible. The pain I have now with Degenerative Disk Disease is chronic, but between PT and the Tramadol I'm prescribed, the pain is manageable. Yesterday, I slipped on the ice and fell directly on the part of my back I originally fell on 8 years ago. Instant excruciating pain. After writhing on the ground for 5 straight minutes, I managed to get myself to the ER.

I was prescribed Percocet 5/325 and Flexeril 10. The combination of the two relieves the pain, but does not eliminate it. I'm a big guy, and I swear that I should have a larger dose.

My PCP is very old fashioned, and I'm honestly scared he won't renew the medication the ER doc gave me. I'm missing work right now, and can't go back until I have the Doc's ok. I'm still in pain, and I know I can't go back to work without some form of pain relief that is stronger than Tramadol. If my doctor decides to not refill my two prescriptions, do I have any other options? Will it make me seem like a "druggie" if I go to another Doctor?

Years ago I had insane dental pain, an abscess, and just trying to get pain relief for that alone was impossible. They all made me feel like a bad person for asking for some form of painkiller.

Yes, you can up the dosage, if your doctor approves and they'd most likely have you stay on the same dosing schedule.

Are there any other questions or concerns?

Hello, Mr. Slaybury! How are you? I'm sorry that you're in so much pain.

I really can't speak for your PCP and what they will or will not do, but in most cases, they will not prescribe narcotic pain medications. Thus, you may end up with them referring you to someone else, such as a specialist to treat your injury, or for pain management.

The FDA lists Percocet as being a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Flexeril is classified as a muscle relaxant and it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache and dry mouth.

Please, don't be afraid to ask them for a referral, if they won't or can't help you.

Jennifer, yes, there is also a 100mg dosage available.

Is there anything else I can help with?
