Muscle Pain From Warfarin? (Page 4)

Hi. I have been taking warfarin for 4 months. Prior to my PE when landing home from a long flight I was very active running and swimming every day. Since the attack every muscle and many leg joints ache all the time. Is this a side effect from medication? Thanks.

I was on Warfarin for a DVT & PE about 7 years ago and the longer I took it the more my muscles and nerve endings would hurt. It got so bad I could not even stand for anyone to touch. It hurt to even sit. My doctor out me back on Lovanax shots and the pain started subsiding but was still present. After I was off all the blood thinners it took some time for the muscle pain to completely reside. I was diagnosed with a blood clot about a year ago and this time I was put on Xarelto. At first it did not bother me but again I started developing muscle pain and it felt like my nerve ending were firing all the time. A strange feeling that is hard to describe unless yo you have felt it. This was gradually get worse. I went to a Hemotologist, since I did not want the pain to get as severe as it did with Warfarin. She recommended that I remain on a blood thinner since this was my second DVT, but I chose to discontinue using the Xarelto in hopes that my muscles would stop hurting. I have been off the Xarelto almost four months now and I am still having muscle pain. I am beginning to wonder if I have some kind-of permanent damage since the pain is still there. The pain and feeling in my body is hard to describe and I am sure to some hard to understand, but it is real. I just want my body to feel normal again.

Hi Jodie, I feel for you I feel exactly the same symptoms as you. I had a Multiple PE in my lungs and nearly died, I also had a previous PE 20 years before so am also on life long Warfarin. Since being on it I have experience severe backache, joint ache on waking I feel like I have flu, dizzy, foggy, achy, generally feel like "s***" every day. Have asked the Dr if warfarin is the cause, no response just sent me for blood test echocardiogram, x-rays, etc. I had every test under the sun no results. I'm sick and tired of not knowing what is the cause.

Hearing your message makes me think it must be the warfarin as the symptoms were there since taking it!! I lost my job as I was unable to work full time as it was a physical job I have know IT skill. I'm 60 this year and am struggling to find work. I cant retire for 6 more years. I know I am lucky to be here but it feels like a living hell. I am searching other natural remedies as an alternative. I will come back to you and let you know what I have found. I don't want to feel like this for the rest of my life!!

Hi I have been on warfarin for 3months for a clot in my carotid artery. I am having extreme leg pain and my Dr have not heard of side effects such as this. I am convinced it is from the blood thinners. I am 35 years old and was fine before this, hopefully I don't have to be on this much longer.

I have been on warfarin now for 18 months after a 2nd blood clot I also have lots of joint ache, and dizzy I told my warfarin nurse and she said she had not heard of the things I mentioned before from this drug, but I can hardly walk with the pain in my back and knee, also shoulders, I feel sorry for my husband as he gets my anger sometimes when it gets bad, I feel bit better that I now have heard I am not on my own, I wish us all an answer soon and hope someone listens.

I have been on Warfrin for the past two years after my PE and have suffered pain in my hips, shoulders, legs and arms. We are all aware of what medication we are taking and would like to hear if there is anybody who takes another blood thinner other than Warfrin and do they have any side effects similar to what I have?

Good for you that is what i did the pain had gone within a few days and my doctor came up with xarelto a week later and not had any pain on that at all since.

I was put on warafin after a total knee replacement while I was in the hospital and rehap I was on a lot of pain meds so I didn't feel a lot of pain that I felt when I came home and wasn't on that much pain meds but was still on the warafin I tell you my back was killing me I didn't know where to put myself I stopped taking the warafin for a couple of days to see if would help with the backache going away well sure enough had no more pain in the back I went back on the warafin was afraid of blood clots and guess what the pain in the back came back I called the dr. and he didn't think it was a side effect he never heard of it but he took me off them and my back was fine. So talk to your Dr.

I need be on warfarin. I have had 2 PE & 1 DVT in 23 years. I can't use warfarin because of the many side effects. PAIN all over. Especially my toes. Cognitive problems, I can't think. I want to sleep all the time. Thinning hair. Anal bleeding. COLD all the time. There's more. I had no life. My doctor also LIED to me and said warfarin does not cause this. Why do they do that? Of course it does. Goodness we use it to kill rats and mice. I quit. I know it's not a good solution but I need to work, pay the bills, and I need to think to do that.

Yes it is a side effect of warfarin. I had muscle pain. Cognitive problems. Cold! Tired all the time. And more. I had to quit. Against doctors orders. And I really need the med. Female. 59 yo.

I had bilateral PE as well since 7/2013. Ive been on a split dose of 17 mg per week since. I had slight joint pain before PE.
I have asked doc about pain several times and was told warfarin doesnt cause that symptom.
The pain ive been experiencing over the past year has been unbelievable.
Blood tests revealed vitamin D,B12 deficiencies.
Mega doses and daily suppliments helps some. I used to have tiny pain explosions throughout extremities, diabetic type pain. Im not diabetic, or over weight, although since being hospitalized in 2013 with PE I lost nearly 30 lbs, I have gained about 32lbs back. Most Ive weighed ever.
I am now suffering extreme muscle weakness, withering, joint pain from shoulders to ankles. Full length of a muscle, eg. quads are sore to the touch just under the skin. It affects my will and ability to walk or want to do much, hence the weight gain.
My ability to focus or care to focus has been affected.
Im 58 and have gone most of my life hardly taking asparin for pain, and only meds when sick. I know my body,
I listen when it tells me its hurt. Stupid clot felt like a hernia, so I blew it off. Damn near killed me.
The constant pain is unacceptable. Doc has prescribed pain med I take the least I can and sparingly, as it can make me a bit tired. I was told I would be on warfarin 6-12 months, then told probably for life.. My quality of life is nearly gone as, I barely feel like getting up for work everyday.

Get your blood factors checked, there are 30? factors in blood, many effect warfarin and the dosage. My blood had to be analyzed at MAYO clinic to discover all the factors I have.
at least your INR may stabilize on a smaller dose.

Doctors want to tell you it is not a side effect from taking Warfarin. But as you can see from the many posts on this site, numerous people have experienced this kind of pain while taking this drug including me. My doctor had me on Xarelto after a 2nd blood clot and I did not have the extreme pain but my muscles did hurt.

Hi I have been on warfarin from November 2013. I had two DVT attacks and now Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome. I have been suffering with leg pain since the attacks and in my annual visit last week to my physician was advised that because I ignored the clots and got to the hospital too late the vein walls have been forever damaged. I live off pain killers. I have just also been told to Aspavor so don't know how that will impact further. I have however started with indoor cycling with a spinner as it less impact on the legs. My diet is minimal since been in hospital so why I got cholesterol it is unknown as I eat little and generally healthy food. I have picked up weight since been on warfarin. Suggest you start with legs stretch and low impact exercise and I use venavine or antistax (I am in South Africa) for the leg pains as I tired of medication. Good luck and if you do have the same feeling of a DVT do not waste time go to hospital and every minute counts.

I thank everyone who wrote here about Warfarin and their experiences with it.
I, too, thought my pain and aching was a result of my atrial fibrillation episode(the
after affects). I thought I was alone in my pain and discomfort. I currently have a
new PCP. After blood work, I will see him and hopefully remedy this by removing
myself from this awful drug. I have felt desperate and limited in activity.

Hi, have been reading all your comments so would like to tell you my story to all.
in 2014 I had a multiple pulmonary embolism (PE) and now on warfarin for life. whilst in hospital I developed back pain but thought it was due to the spasm pains I had before being rush to A@E, but have been taking warfarin for two years and back pain has got worse, Dr have tested me for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, had many fasting full blood test for liver, kidney thyroid all came back negative. My Dr won't believe that its the warfarin that's causing it, i feel sure there wrong, I ask if I could have a break to see if the pain goes away but they say I would be in too much risk as I nearly died with it... surely I have a choice?

Are u ok? Have u had INR checked. Coumadin is killing me. This is second time. In 8 years. I received allergy with xaelto Eloquis I received PE's again. I hate Coumadin. 63 15 grand kids. But not living

I have been on Warfarin for almost a year. I have been experiencing severe pain all over especially in my legs. I just have another day or two to finish these meds and then I am done. I do, however, have to take an 81mg baby aspirin a day after that. When I fly on the plane for 3-4 hours, I have to do a Lovenox shot before I go and when I come back. Same for long trips in a car if no stopping.

I ended up with PE two days after my husband came home from the hospital from having a triple bypass. This was all in March 2015.

I also take 2 extra strength tylenol tablets in the morning and at night so I can try to get rid of the pain, but that doesn't always help either. So I will be glad to get off the Warfarin and hope to never have to go on it again.

Well there you have it! Warfarin causes severe pain. Now we need to find a solution to an alternative blood thinner.
