Midrin Where Can I Get It (Page 2) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have been taking Midrin for the past 10 years for migraines because I don't get any side effects from it and it works really well. Now all of a sudden the pharmacies in my area (3 of them) are saying that they can't get any or it is on backorders for the past 3 months. Do they still make it? I tried a different medication and it makes me really dissy so I really need to know how to get the Midrin. How can I get a presecription filled and where even in the mail would be ok.
I just called my neighborhood (small family pharmacy) and YES, MIDRIN IN GENERIC FORM IS AVAILABLE THERE!!!
Thanks for letting us know it is available. I thought for sure I'd be suffering forever without it! I'll be calling my doc in the morning to get it filled!
I was actually given Midrin in the hospital about a week or two ago. Then I asked my doctor to precscribe it and she did. My Pharmacy (not a compounding pharmacy) has it!! Ready!! Yes - today I will find out how much it will cost. I know. I'm in shock! I will tell you if there is a catch but this is in USA... And it is the Realy, old fashioned actual Midrin. Prodrin made me so dizzy that I had to crawl, so I had to stop taking it ( although it did get rid of my headache ) I have been depending on Sumatriptan since Midrin has been gone. I'll follow up with whatever happened when I go to the Pharmacy today. Wish me luck!!
Hello. Check with your "compounding" pharmacy's. They can compound it as that is what I am doing with my script for Midrin.
So my understanding is that Macoven Pharmaceuticals is manufacturing Midrin- so you should be able to get it again. I have used it for over 30 years and love it! It seems much safer then a lot of the drugs out there. I get aura based migraines so once my sight start to go I take one and the headache is pretty much gone-and my sight comes back. You can also find it under the generic Epidrin. It is a very cheap medication and maybe thats why there has been so many manufacturing problems- no big profits in it!
My insurance no longer covers! Cost per pill at Walmart is $4.01 !
I was told today by Walgreens in Edmond, Oklahoma (suburb of Oklahoma City) that they have Midrin. I can no longer fill my prescription for Prodrin now (it has been taken off the market for some reason - don't know why). I always thought Midrin worked better anyhow. I don't have specifics on the cost yet as Walgreens was contacting my doctor to see if it was okay to substitute Midrin for Prodrin. You might check with a Walgreens in your area to see if they have it or can get it for you.
I have been unable to take Triptans or Ergots due to a heart condition. Midrin is safe for me according to my PCP. I was finally able to get a "generic" Midrin at Walgreens in Nixa, Mo today. The person I talked to on the phone said their supplier had 100 bottles (of what qty each, I do not know) in stock. So, try calling Walgreens. My ins paid for it with my generic copayment.
Its available in the U.S.. Check Rite Aid. I know Walgreens CVS has it for sure. Just pricing is high. Also the FDA is bringing back Midrin. It has not made it to pharmacies yet. Hope this helps.
Actually the generic was still and is still available. The reason you may not be able to find it is many pharmacy's are mis informed. The reason the name brand is not available is the company who made the name brand did not meet the qualifications needed by the FDA to continue the Manufacturing process. Midrin was given a preliminary approval to be sold for a specific number of years, and at the end of the preliminary approval they were required to seek approval for a permanent drug approval from the FDA, but they did not get there paper work in, in a timely manner so the FDA did not approve the drug, so the name brand of Midrin was no longer available. However, the generic form of the drug is still available, but many pharmacies are not aware of it since there was a shortage of the generic form because of the lack of availability of the name brand. Because of the shortage many pharmacies assumed that the generic was no longer available as well. The generic companies who manufacture the generic form met the qualifications from what I understood so this is why the generic is still available. My doctor almost stopped prescribing the medicine to me because he said it was no longer available, but when I mentioned it to my pharmacy they told me it was still available, but only in generic form I let my doctor know and he switched me back. There was a catch. The generic did cost me $36-$58 when paying cash without insurance now that same price is $144. Also, some migraine clinics are reporting that Midrin is coming back on the market so keep an eye out.
The ingredients for midrib can be requested to be done at Sams club pharmacy. They have a compound pharmacy
Midrin IS available .....I get it thru Express Scrips regularly. I’ve used it for 30 yrs , on and off, and there was a time when I was told it wasn’t available any longer. But I was able to get them after a short time. Express scrips has filled an RX of 180caps(3 months supply) for me for years. Midrin works well for tension headaches w/o knocking me out. Many insurance plans use Express scripts for mail order Rx’s.
Midriff is no longer on the market in the USA. They make a generic compound for it that I've gotten through express scripts, Costco, etc. It's Isomethept-Dichloralp-Acetamin. If you google it, you will see how many mgs of each drug go into the compound. My insurance covered it until this year. I found a coupon online that so far has reduced the drug from $239.99 for 50 (Costco) to $53.99 Walgreens. I paid $10 for 50 last year. The compound drugs are barely being covered anymore. I hope this has helped you.
I've been having trouble getting the Isometh/Dich/Apap Midrin equivalent as well. CVS couldn't get it so I switched to Express Scripts, and as of today they no longer carry it either.
Some googling led me to a letter the FDA sent out in Oct 2017 that ordered any company manufacturing or distributing Isometheptene Mucate to stop. Therefore the Midrin equivalent is now illegal in the US. Every other option I've tried has had terrible side effects.

Re: JJ (# 123)
According to the FDA notice, any drug containing Isometheptene Mucate would need to go through the new drug application process. Since a drug company would have to spend millions and 5 - 10 years to even try to get approval, it's never going to happen. Really sucks when Midrin is the only thing that's worked without major side effects over the last 20 years!

You said it wasn't sold in the US any longer, but is it sold in Canada? If so, how would I get a perscription filled there. Thanks for the info.
sherri where did you get them. I have checked with some compounding pharmacies and have been given prices that are much higher. thanks, penny
Let me update this. When I said I "got some today" I meant I called the compounding pharmacy and was told no problem - here's the price. When I went to pick it up they said "We cant make Midrin". The second pharmacist at this pharmacy told me to tell my doc to not write "Midrin" on the prescription, but to make the prescription for Acetaminophen, Isomethaptene and Chloralhydrate. These are the ingrediants in Midrin. (Something about copy rights for the name Midrin.) The pharmacist said when it's written that way they can make it. I fogot to ask what the price will be but I'll let you know the outcome and the price.
So the original pharmacist I spoke to was incorrect in what he told me. I'm going back to my doc and getting a new prescription with those specific ingrediants on it and see if that will work! My pharmacy is Springhill Pharmacy in Wheat Ridge CO. 8550 W. 38th Ave. I'll keep you all updated.
If you live in Virginia, Stuarts Draft Family Pharmacy, (near Charlottesville) can compound this medication for you. They cannot ship out of state.
Yes! When i had the doctor do the prescription for the individual medication that make Midrin the compounding pharmacy did make up for me! My doc even spoke to the pharmacist. Acetaminophen, Isomethaptene and chloralhydrate are the ingrediants. I have it in my hand now! You can get "Midrin"!
This is great news. I suffer from debilitating menstrual migraines with pre-ceeding aura, and Midrin is the only thing that has worked for me. It is a lifesaver and allows me to go about my day normally instead of ending up in the emergency room. I will speak to my doctor about having it compounded. It would be nice to not have to ration what's left of my Midrin once knowing it could be compounded and available to me in the future. Such a shame they stopped making it. It's an inexpensive drug and lets people live productively without wasting so much money and resources in emergency rooms.
