Midrin Where Can I Get It (Page 2)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I have been taking Midrin for the past 10 years for migraines because I don't get any side effects from it and it works really well. Now all of a sudden the pharmacies in my area (3 of them) are saying that they can't get any or it is on backorders for the past 3 months. Do they still make it? I tried a different medication and it makes me really dissy so I really need to know how to get the Midrin. How can I get a presecription filled and where even in the mail would be ok.

Just found a generic at a Walmart in Madison, AL.

I just had a RX filled for "generic for Midrin", manufactured by Method Pharmaceuticals. I compared the ingredients to my old bottle of Midrin, and they are exactly the same. It was covered by insurance (100 pills $10 copay). It was brought in for me by my local Costco.

A new formulation of isometheptene mucate (active ingredient in Midrin) is being currently in phase 2 testing by Tonix pharmaceuticals for episodic tension-type headaches (migraine testing later). By removing most of the S-isomer, which has a blood pressure raising side-effect, and leaving the R-isomer, which is effective on headaches, the dosage can be safely raised. Hopefully the new drug, dubbed TNX-201 for now, with 7.5x more isometheptene mucate than Midrin, will be approved and become available in 2017. The phase 2 results are due late 2015.

Anyone who needs midrin will be pleased when this becomes available. (It won't be generic, but...)

Wonderful! Since I came to be unable to get Midrin, I search from time to time for this information. Thank you so much!

I found generic Midrin from the company listed a few posts down. I had to call the company and speak to a different department. Because it's not listed under midrin. You have to give them the actual ingredients and then have your doctor right the prescription with the ingredients, then your pharmacy can order it. The only pharmacy I found that can order it is one of the smaller ones in my area. The chain pharmacies like Walgreens aren't able to order it because they are only able to order it from one supplier. There is hope!

my problem is also the price now, used to be $5/60 pills with ins. my insurance now does not cover this drug. they say it is now a DESI drug, classified by the FDA. which means the drug has not been proven to be effective even though they been prescribing it for 60+ years. I too now have to pay $3.50/pill @ walgreens. (with a discount card it saved me $60) this was the cheapest place I could find it. good luck all. ironically it is the most effective headache medicine for me and for many others from what i read.

I have started to have weird side effects after taking midrin for 35 plus years. First insomnia, then restless and jumpy legs which has now progressed to restless and jumpy legs AND arms. Anyone else experiencing this. It has to be the Midrin (or generic) because it only happens when I take this drug.

I beg to differ on your comment. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor. Vasoconstriction is exactly what is needed. Vascular headaches are caused by vasodilation of arteries in the head.... constrict the arteries, the migraine settles down.

Actually the generic was still and is still available. The reason you may not be able to find it is many pharmacy's are mis informed. The reason the name brand is not available is the company who made the name brand did not meet the qualifications needed by the FDA to continue the Manufacturing process. Midrin was given a preliminary approval to be sold for a specific number of years, and at the end of the preliminary approval they were required to seek approval for a permanent drug approval from the FDA, but they did not get there paper work in, in a timely manner so the FDA did not approve the drug, so the name brand of Midrin was no longer available. However, the generic form of the drug is still available, but many pharmacies are not aware of it since there was a shortage of the generic form because of the lack of availability of the name brand. Because of the shortage many pharmacies assumed that the generic was no longer available as well. The generic companies who manufacture the generic form met the qualifications from what I understood so this is why the generic is still available. My doctor almost stopped prescribing the medicine to me because he said it was no longer available, but when I mentioned it to my pharmacy they told me it was still available, but only in generic form I let my doctor know and he switched me back. There was a catch. The generic did cost me $36-$58 when paying cash without insurance now that same price is $144. Also, some migraine clinics are reporting that Midrin is coming back on the market so keep an eye out.

I found out recently that midrin (or at least its generic version) is widely available again. I am a military spouse and the VA clinic and pharmacy I go to do not carry it. I told my doc that I have been using excedrin but it doesnt work, even after taking more than you are supposed to (8 in 24 hrs). I told him that I would like to find a way to have midrin as a more effective and ultimately safer alternative. Was there any way he could have the va pharmacy order it. I know... i am desperate... He seemed disinterested in my plight. Typical military health care professionals. He Looked at me like I had two heads. :( I have bad migraines which plague me during my cycle and tension headaches and also barometric headaches outside my cycle. I am almost 40, I eat clean, work out, etc. My only 'vice' is the odd glass of wine. I have been precribed fioricet and vicodin in the past but they make me sick. Triptans make me freak out. I have been stuck in this situation since around 2009 when I couldn't get any midrin at the pharmacy, no one had any as it had been removed from the market.

The reason that there is no "generic" is because that when the company that manufactured it was permitted by the FDA to put it back on the market, they released it almost as though it were a new medication. They are the only ones producing it and have the monopoly. My doctor wrote me an RX for 100 pills and the price blew me away. I had no insurance. I haven't looked into it again in months, but as I see in these posts it appears that there is still no generic.

I refilled my Rx for the generic medication that is the same combination of medications as Midrin just a week ago. It is generic. I am not sure why you can't get the generic anymore but maybe you need to have your pharmacy call the manufacturer. See my previous post for more information on the manufacturer. I am SO GLAD it is available again!!!

Hi,
Midrin has been pulled from the market due to FDA regulations. this is the second time this has happened in the past 13 years. Midrin has no generic and the FDA doesn't like that. This is the absolute BEST medication that I have taken for my migraines and I have tried them all from nasal sprays to preventative meds like Topamax ( and I still get them while on the preventative) but way less often. If you experience more than 15 a Month talk to your Neurologist about a preventative medication because there is no telling when Midrin is coming back.
