Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 64) (Top voted first)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

If you're taking Cipro, you better get some probiotics and prebiotics. Stuff can make your hair fall out to. Won't happen until two or three months later. Wipes out your gut Flora. That's why you need probiotics. Or the bad gut bacteria takes over. And your whole life falls apart!

Maybe you can use green juices to clear the toxins in your body. Medicine increases toxins in the body.

You will get problems by protein intake... how many of you got the same issues? Mostly you have to lessen it and put new nourishment in your cells. Juicing helps and healthy fats too.

It lasted me the whole time I was on it. The second you get off it, buy quality probiotics, B12 and iron. Otherwise you could end up with a killer bacterial infection, and hair loss. Been there done that. Also, the infection is a b**** to get rid of. Can cause autoimmune diseases. I'm living proof. Good luck!

Finally was sent to a neurologist who said I had a bad reaction to Cipro. I'm in physical therapy which is definitely helping.... I still get physically winded when I move any distance but can now walk with my feet closer together and I'm less dizzy.

Well, it took about three months for my hair to stop falling out. Get Maui shampoo and conditioner. Or Organic coconut milk shampoo and conditioner, I have permanent IBS and Sibo, and it sucks. I hope you don't. I feel so tired all the time. Ages you to. Dry skin, tinitus, bloated every time I eat, sinus infection all the time. It's miserable. I'm not kidding, get probiotics, immediately! Once the bad gut Flora takes over, it's over. Until you know, avoid sugar fructose and carbs.thats what it feeds on. You'll know, cause you will bloat soon as you eat some. Good luck. Get some B12, D3 ??

Great info.. I found out from my naturopath that you need to take antibiotics for 12 weeks after being attacked by antibiotics.. No one else had EVER said that. So when I had later challenges I kept up the probiotics for 12 weeks and even doubled up on the dosage.

I started taking metronidazole and cephalexin on 4/27, both three times a day, for an abscessed appendix, finally stopped 6/05. I just couldn't take how I felt any longer, and the side effects in my feet and hands continue, 7/16. Two Drs do not seem to believe that these awful drugs, well one anyway, could be causing the problem. I have had my blood checked for other possible causes and the results were normal. So much for their input but I STILL have the effects. What should I do now?

I DO BELIEVE WE WHO HAVE TAKEN THIS MED NEED TO TAKE THIAMINE NOW, STILL. IN MARCH I HAD A UTI AND MY DR RXED CIPRO BEFORE SHE GOT THE TEST RESULTS BACK. I ASKED HER IF THIS WOULD BE A PROBLEM CONSIDERING THE REACTION I GOT TO THIS MEDICATION.. SHE SAID IT WOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM. WITHIN 24 HRS I STARTED HAVING OTHER SYMPTOMS. WHEN I ASKED HER ABOUT IT SHE SAID TO WAIT 30 DAYS AND IF I DIDN'T FEEL BETTER TO SET ANOTHER APPOINTMENT. I FIRED HER!

Cipro is awful! It has awful side effects. It has a black box warning. It can cause all kinds of problems. Google it. Also it's known for making your hair fall out. It takes a couple of months for it to start. This happens especially if you're over 40 years old.

Wow, my hair is thin already... hope I don't get that side effect too. It has been 5 months since I took Cipro. I've been told by my PT and a Naturopath that it will take 2 yrs for my nerves to heal from the damage. I'm trying not to get discouraged and depressed but am trying to slug through this and hope it is not the rest of my life. Would dearly love to go over and punch the doctor, fortunately for her I'm nonviolent.

I hear you! I had a bunion removal. I was fed keflex for a week. Got bacteria infection and the nurse assistant, who hates me, pressured me into taking mobic, knowing I can't take Ibuprofen. Now I have kidney failure! On my way to the hospital to find out how bad it is. All meds for that make your hair fall out too. I wish you the very best!

I need to have a conversation please about cipro... I think you said something and I have done more research...it causes damage to mitochondria I believe you said... and that means real energy issues? I'm having a really bad time with energy after making the mistake of taking 10 pills... and am thinking that I'm looking at 2 yrs to heal, IF I can.. can we talk?

Hi All, My name is Galina and I took metronidazole for 11 days two times a day (500 mg each pill) in the end of February 2018 for H. pylori. I had horrible side effects while on it: sudden weakness in my legs (to the point I could not walk and have to sit down for a while), nausea, anxiety, and tingling in my toes. On the 11th day I could no longer take it because I woke up with severe shooting pain in my right leg and a swollen burning right calf. Also, 1 month after I finished the medication, the left side of my face and head went numb and I lost acuity in my left eye. I have had horrible head pressure and headache in my head and face. I also had horrible nightmares that are beyond any imagination. I was waking up drenched in sweats. I also had zapping in my head at night and almost like electrical burning discharge in my head. Also, I had very bad insomnia for 4 months but it’s getting better where I can sleep now between 5-7 hours. Huge improvement in sleeping pattern at least. Most troubling, my peripheral neuropathy has spread from right calf burning to my both feet and legs. It’s all happened gradually after I finished the metronidazole. It has been 6 months and my feet and legs burn a lot. It's really hard to walk but I am pushing through every day and hoping for recovery. I had 2 MRIs to check the brain and neck and spine and it was all clear, no lesions. My neurologist did not believe that metronidazole would cause these symptoms, but I know it was the medication because I was perfectly fine before taking it. My question is: has anybody had symptoms of peripheral neuropathy that progressed further or spread from the original place? I originally had only a burning calf right after I finished the medication, but the burning has gradually spread to my feet, legs, and upper tights. Thank you all for any information!!!

Re: Galina (# 1275) Expand Referenced Message

Hi Galina,

I'm sorry you are having these symptoms from metronidazole. I also took it for one week, twice a day 500 mg in capsule form. I would see if you could get a second opinion from a different neurologist and get all your bloodwork checked, ultrasounds if needed. Also, there is the EMG test and another one that a neurologist can do to test for peripheral neuropathy. For small-fiber neuropathy, there is a different test.

Re: Galina (# 1275) Expand Referenced Message

Different people react differently.. Erin who used to be on here said it was a damage or destruction of thiamine in your system...so get your B complex vitamins up, up , up... and my neurologist said I have poly neuropathy as a result of the meds and other issues with fatigue and balance and dizziness issues...
I'm now almost 2 yrs out and doing better on part of those things but then made the mistake of taking cipro.... further issues.. avoid that one too if you can.

Re: Yoyo (# 1276) Expand Referenced Message

Hi Yoyo, Thank you so much for your response. In my area there is only one neurology office that does all the testing. If I want to go to another neurologist, I have to wait at least 6-10 months to get to see him or her because of the long waiting time. Honestly speaking, I am done seeing neurologists because the don’t believe that metronidazole caused me these horrible symptoms. At least my neurologist did not believe and told me that it probably was some kind of virus that she doesn’t know name for. She is hard to deal with but she did a nerve conduction test and EMG and everything is normal. But because I have a neuropathy that she could not see on the test, she told me that I have a small fiber neuropathy which I already figured out myself before even testing me. I hope I will heal overtime and regain my quality of life. How are you doing? Do you also have a neuropathy in your feet or legs? How long ago dis you take metronidazole? Does your neuropathy got less with time? Sorry for asking you so many questions and thank you so much for your support!!!!

Re: Betty (# 1277) Expand Referenced Message

Hello Betty, Thank you so much for your response. It is encouraging that you are doing better and healing. I am glad that the polyneuropathy, dizziness, and fatigue are less and less. That gives me hope! I also had dizziness and it got away within month after I stopped Metronidazole and fatigue is lessening with the time too. But my neuropathy in my feet and legs are so bothering and I hope it will go away with time. How is your neuropathy now after 2 years? Thank you for warning me about Cipro. I did not take it but I took clarithromycin antibiotic with metronidazole to treat H. Pylori. I heard that Cipro is hard on a body and it can take some time to to recover. I hope you recover soon from Cipro!!! Also, thank you for telling me about taking Thiamine. Have you been taking it and felt some improvements? Thank you for your support!!!
