Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 57)

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

Thank you for the update BJH. It is good to hear some people have recovered even though it takes time and a lot of patience. Any problems with taste buds after the medication ?

yoyo,, no issues with taste buds afterward... but we don't all react the same way to things so it may not be any indication as far as I am concerned.. I know when I was taking the meds there was an awful taste in my mouth... so glad to be over it.

Thanks BJH, yes it is possible that we don't react in the same ways to the medication.

I just wanted to see if others were having similar symptoms and if they were getting better.

Yoyo, my symptoms are better....it's been almost 6 months for me....but I do still have one or two days a week where I have twinges of the anxiety and lack of interest in doing my normal routine. The other things like facial numbness and headache and shakiness have pretty much gone. But I'm also recovering from diverticulitis, which was the reason they gave me flagyl and Cipro, and sometimes I think a bit of the "anxiety" could be a flare up of that. At least these horrid symptoms aren't 24/7 like they were early on.

Karol, wow, they gave you a double whammy with those two meds, both of which cause the same kind of symptoms..

BJH, yes this seems to be the "cocktail" of choice to treat diverticulitis. I wish I'd known before I ever took them, because the diverticulitis was bad enough, without compounding the misery!

I hope you are feeling better Karol and BJH. I had a few days where I tried positive thinking and thought I had less jerking and taste was a bit better but now it has all come back full force as though it were two months ago.

I still have: jerking muscles at night that wake me up, dry and cracked skin that tears with normal use, serotonin dysregulation (confirmed by doctor), heat palpitations, decreased sensation in legs and feet after exercise, pain in my arm muscles and backs of elbows sometimes, distorted sense of smell and taste (tastes bitter or burning), white tongue with round patches, and now a new prickly sensation in my joints in my fingers and knuckles and my wrists.

I was tested EMG for peripheral neuropathy but they said I don't have it. They didn't test for small-fiber neuropathy yet though. I also have cracking joints, swelling in my arms and hands and back, and strange weight loss when I took the antibiotic but now I have gained 5 kg and it's awful.

I am so discouraged but I don't want to take anymore medication. I was given sleeping pills and muscles relaxants to take before but I don't know if they helped or worsened the problem.

I also took Kefir after I finished the antibiotics but I think that made it worse.

I am so discouraged and no amount of reassurance seems to alleviate the problem and I have run out of internet articles on metronidazole. All I found recently was something that described the antibiotic-induced "mania" that can include anxiety, insomnia, emotional liability, etc but that doesn't explain the dry skin or whether it will go away in time of if this will be like the CIPRO antibiotic.

Anna, I also had really dry skin and parts of my driest skin I wasn't sweating. I also had skin tearing from normal wear and tear and it wasn't healing. I also have cracking joints. Please respond to me on the website for an update on your symptoms if they have resolved. I have had the symptoms for two and a half months now.

Ohh The dry skin i still have. And dry eyes, but The eyes was horrible The first months. Also have a dry mouth
But thats not The worst symptoms, i have a long list with damage and symptoms. But for me its 1year and 10 months out. I guess its permanent for me. But it dont have to be for you. You can heal alot if you are only two and a half months out. Many heal along The way. The hardest is that it can take time

Anna, are you taking any statin drugs for cholesterol? I had major issue with dry mouth when I started taking that, struggled with it a long time,kept asking dr, dentist, etc about it and they had no ideas...one day I asked my chiropractor and he asked what drugs I was taking...then he said, go research the side effects. it was right there in the lit...dry mouth.... I stopped taking drug and the dry mouth stopped in 3 days, never to return.

No i dont take any statins. The dry skin, mouth and everything else that i suffeer from is from flagyl. Neuropathy from head to toe, headpressure, dry skin, blurred vision, vasovagal Syncope, my body cant controll my heart rate and BP, myopathy, swallowing problems, breathing problems and much more. everything from flagyl.

Wow! That is pretty upsetting. at least you don't also have symptoms from other meds too.. It is extremely frustrating for you i'm sure. Is there any doc giving you help and hope?

Yes, for the doctors I think it depends on their experiences with the drug as well and what they have seen and researched. It also depends if they are innovative and think outside the box to find new solutions to help you. I really hope that we find healing.

I was also given metronidazole and another to take with it, and had the worst symptoms of anxiety t hat I think possible, flew to Florida did not want to get on plane went to accident and emergency at 4am in USA, they said I was suffering from acute trauma, had had my stomach removed 8 months before due to cancer but flew o florida 6 months after with no side affects, never thought about it being the metronidazole, two months later diverticulitis given metronidazole by another dr, after 3 days so ill doctor left his surgery to come and see me, he stopped the metronidazole, next I was sent to psychiatrist, who put me on ecitalopram, now after 3 months feel better but don't think I will ever feel completely right.

Yoyo, my doc figured it out when I went to see my eye doctor for a 1 month check up after treatment for dry eyes... she was shocked at the change in me and asked what had happened in the past 30 days and I told her... She asked who my doc was and i gave her the name... she knows my primary doc so she said she would call...she did call my doc and told her to get me into her office NOW... That's how I finally got her to notice that I was really having some problems... and they admitted that it was the drugs and ran other diagnostics and sent me to a neurologist.

Yes, im seeing doctors and neurologists. But to be honest, they dont say much at all. they have admitted that the neuropathy is from flagyl, that i have neurotoxic neuropathy. but the other things, they say that flagyl can not do thing like that. HAH! they are a joke. They will not see it, and thats why more and more people is harmed by this drugs. If they would admit it, and report this, maybe they would not prescribe it like candy. Im going to do another EMG and ENeG in the fall. I dont want to again, but they want to see if they see any difference for the better or worse. If its show signs of myopathy again, i have to do a muscle biopsy. And i read what you wrote to yoyo. I you are almost the first, that have said that it is flagyl/metrodinazole that hurt you. Almost every person that i have talked too, their doctors deny it. I hope you feel better and better along the way and are healing? :-)

Vanessa. Im so sorry . Flagyl/metrodinazole is a horrible drug. It can cause so much damage, both physical and mental problems. I hope you get better and better along the way.
