Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 55)
UpdatedI have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...
are you replying to my post regarding to my pulsating stomach sir?
yes, randolph, I was responding to your message about the pulsating stomach. have you talked to your doc about it yet? is it still happening?
Ranolf, both metronidazole and omeprazole can be pretty rough on the stomach. Metronidazole is a very strong antibiotic that will clean out your entire gut flora, which means you have to replenish it, Omeprazole can imbalance your digestive tract. So...I agree with BJH, to see a doctor. In the meantime, I'd suggest buying some kefir--it's a drinkable yogurt. It really helped me replenish my gut when I was sick after taking metronidazole. My favorite is a brand called Lifeway; it's usually in the dairy or yogurt aisle of the grocery store.
BJH yes still pulsating when im lying down.. no pain at all just beating not that strong..im paranoid coz i think its a side effect of the anti biotic that i take for my stomach infection.
ask your doc about it... then be paranoid if you must? If you don;t ask you will continue to worry. antibiotics can totally screw up your gut.... what are you taking to help your gut recouperate?
thanks for the idea...i dont have any pain in my stomach just wondering that my stomach pulsating..
Anybody else have jerking muscles in their sleep upon going to bed and waking up ?
Hi, Yoyo. I did--my legs jerked randomly throughout the night. I also had hands tremors (not just when sleeping, though). More on the left than right. The leg jerking stopped after about seven months, the hand tremor in my right hand resolved and the left one flares up only time-to-time and is usually an "internal" tremor (aka, I can feel a slight instability with my left arm/hand but it's usually not enough to affect my use of the hand).
Randolf, as for the stomach pulsating issue...acid inhibitors actually have a lot of side effects. And metronidazole will clean out your digestive tract of all your good gut flora (much more than most antibiotics). I'd suggest seeing your doctor but in the meantime, maybe try replenishing your gut by drinking kefir. It's a drinkable yogurt and has lots of good probiotics--you can find it at the grocery store under the dairy or yogurt aisles. It did wonders for my gut but you have to drink it every day (about 5 oz should do it) for about a month before you see any results. Good luck.
Thanks for the message Erin. I also have hand tremors in both hands but more in my right and my fingers. The muscle jerking affects mostly my hands and fingers but also my shoulders, hips, face, legs, toes, ankles and stomach at night and early morning. My skin also is dry and cracks appear and creases appear more prominent.
I didn't have the dry skin, but CeraVe Cream (not the lotion, the cream is better) is excellent for dry skin. It keeps my knuckles from cracking during the winter.
Great, thanks for the suggestion Erin. I am hoping it will go away in a few weeks to a month.
Does anybody have any updates? Is anyone improving ?
I think I am getting better. I was prescribed Flagyl and Cipro for diverticulitis in February, so I am also trying to restore balance in my gut and never have that again, so I feel like I'm dealing with two situations. The side effects seem to still come and go, but this past week I've had more good than rough days. I thought I was having a flareup of the diverticulitis, and I think it can contribute to the weird anxiety I have felt with the flagyl, so I am not sure which thing was causing the anxiety this week. I appreciate Erin's comments about how long it takes to replenish your gut, as I figure that's important for me to fight off the diverticulitis. A CT scan showed that it had cleared up 6 weeks after diagnosis, but I never want to have it again and have to argue with them about treatment, because I will never take those antibiotics again. Getting past the side effects would certainly help me deal with the gut issues more rationally, I think!
Thank you for your reply Karol. It helps to know that you are getting better.
I am currently having cycles of 3 days a week where things seem to be getting better and then 4 days where it is awful. It feels as though it is always there though. I have done so much research on the Internet, the library and looked at scientific articles about the side effects of metronidazole, but I don't seem to be further along because I'm not a scientist and so I don't know if I am a fast metabolizer of the drug or how much my mitochondrial DNA has been damaged. My doctor says it will probably go away but I guess time will tell.
Yoyo, I also wonder if other things contribute. Like, I'm 63, so I wonder if my age makes repair take longer.
I don't know, I think it depends on the person. I was looking at case studies that I found online about metronidazole and age didn't seem to be a factor. One thing that was was the genetic profile. There were case studies in India where men in their thirties had really strong adverse effects to metronidazole even after small doses and they theorized it was due to how they metabolized the drug.
Hi randolf
I also have The pulsating in my stomach, but not only there, i have The pulsating in my head, throath and back to.
did you go to your doctor anna?i dont know whats causing of pulsating..did you know why anna?
The older you are, the more likely to suffer from seizures while taking the drug. The younger you are, the more likely to have psychiatric issues. Motor control issues cut across all ages.
