Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 53)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

They gave this to you and you already suffer from depression? *eye roll*

The medical community needs to understand that you don't give people with a history (or family history) of depression and/or anxiety a drug like this. A history of these issues clearly shows a sensitive central nervous system that is easily affected by drugs that can harm it.

I'm really sorry you're dealing with this new level of problems. The psychiatric issues do have the best chance of a full recovery, but don't be discouraged if the problem lingers for a bit. Some people get better very quickly--others take more time. Try to be patient with yourself. *hugs*

BJH I think you mentioned having short term memory issues correct me if I'm wrong.
Did that get better for you or did you get over it completely? Some things are improving with me but not the memory impairment.

No, I was not the one that had memory problems.. mostly I was so dizzy i had trouble walking... when outside I had to look at the ground all the time to balance because looking up caused all kinds of visual issues that my brain appeared not to be able to process.. when anything moved across the front of my vision I got dizzy...but I could drive fine because things moving from front to back along the sides didn't bother me. It was weird... and when I moved quickly to turn around I nearly fell each time. I took to using a cane until I finally got some relief..

Oh my goodness! I wish I would have read this before I took the same poison!
Doctors and Nurse practisioners are so irresponsible! I was given this for a rash on the outside if my privates. Bloodwork was done and samples were taken and all came back normal. However, this potent drug was prescribed to me anyway. After the third day, I was experiencing headaches and tightness in my chest. I stopped it immediately after going on line to read side effects. Its been a few days and I feel like I'm dragging. My head hurts off and on and at night I get chills and then wake up sweating. I feel like I weigh a ton and need to sit often. Sometimes I get to feeling a bit better and start taking care of my chores, but I quickly wear out again.
This medicine should not be given so carelessly. Shame on the healthcare professionals who do so.
It should be taken off the market all together.
Hope you all get to feeling better soon.

I am 4 months since finishing my last dose, and I thought I was getting better. I had 3 weeks of almost normal and then 4 days ago the symptoms gradually came back! It started with the nagging headache and has progressed into the anxiety, brain fog, and shaky insides. Is this typical? I'm wondering if perhaps I got some chicken that had been treated with antibiotics or something that triggered this. I was so relieved to think I was on the mend, and now this relapse has me perplexed. Has this happened to anyone else? I've read that sometimes it comes and goes, but I was really hoping it was going away for good!

Hi, Karol. You're having a flare up. They happen with this. I have them and so do a lot of people who have a bad reaction to this drug. I don't know exactly what's happening that's causing these, but it feels like something is "cycling through" (like something on a molecular level) is being replicated and it's being replicated with the damage. This is all speculative but flare up's seem to pass after a few days to a few weeks, and are usually never as bad as the initial reaction. My flare up's were pretty bad the first few times but they're not as bad now. More annoying than debilitating, and the anxiety issues are completely gone. It stinks, I know, but it's your body healing.

Erin, thank you for your quick reply! When I had a couple of weeks of feeling almost normal, I was so happy and relieved because I thought this would be a distant memory soon. This last couple of days has been so confusing and discouraging, and I have one of those imaginations that runs to the worst case scenarios, thinking it must be something else horrible and not a side effect of that nasty drug. The first day I thought it was just a bump in the road, but then as it has continued, and become more like it was at the beginning, I've gotten more scared and confused, so I thank you for your input. It really helps to not be alone going through this. I am blessed that it let up while I had company, and I pray that it will recede again soon so I can function like myself. I was just starting to think that I might actually find me again!

Vanessa I took it in February and didn't realize that the anxiety, and crying about things, and other things like headache, and facial tingling and numbness was from the medication. My doctor did blood work and all was fine...he never mentioned the possibility of side effects and I haven't talked to him since all my test results were normal, but I found this forum and saw that others have had the same experience. I am finally having more good days than bad days, but I thought it would never get better. I only took the drug for one course, and it seems like you took two. I will echo what others told me....hang on and give it time. Read back in this forum because you will be encouraged to see others' progression from hopelessness to finally feeling better. I found this forum when I was really in despair and it helped me a lot.

How long did it take for your symptoms to subside ? I have a lot of symptoms and it has been 6 weeks.

Yoko For me it took about 3 months before I felt like they were subsiding. I'm at 4 months now and it's better but I still have days when they return to some degree.

ask to see a neurologist right away. your doctor will not admit there is a problem so ask adamantly

Thanks for your reply Karol. Did you notice any new symptoms the few weeks after taking the medication or was it just the same ones ? I got new ones and it has been hard.

Yes I kept getting weird things that made me think I was loosing my mind! I didn't find this forum until I was having a very confusing array of symptoms, and it was so comforting to see that everything I was experiencing could be explained by the known side effects and other folks experiences with it. I had severe anxiety, brain fog, numb and tingling face, headache at the base of my skull, weird feeling in my tongue, weakness in one arm....I thought I had some mysterious illness for sure. The anxiety and brain fog was the worst, and after I started feeling better, I did have one day when it came raging back and I couldn't believe that I'd suffered with that for weeks with no answers. Thankfully the relapse only lasted a day, with minor twinges which still make me fear that it will return. So far it's only been that one day of misery, with more days of manageable twinges. I believe the other folks here who said to give it time and it would get better, but when I first found the forum, I wasn't so sure because it had been weeks with new things surfacing every week. Hang in there and trust that it will finally get better.

I feel like i am degenerating, I felt good for a while and after I got that last headache I have been falling apart since! I don't know what to do anymore. I can't sleep because I am so worried about everything everyday! I just want it to end now! :(

Yoyo, I hear you! I'm praying for you. I was in despair too. One thing that has helped me (I think) is magnesium. I found some lotion that has it and I use it on my arms and legs.
