I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...
I'm sorry I meant to say 4 tablets when I posted my story
I just started taking metronidazole to treat my trichamonas infection and I'm having stomach pains and continuing diarrhea it was only a one dose treatment and it was two tablets 500mg. Has anyone else had this problem if so how long did it last?
To all those who have suffered on Metronidazole..... Please read. At the end of Sept, I was diagnosed with acute PID. My infection was very severe and I was put on Metronidazole and Doxycycline at beginning of Oct for 3 weeks. I had severe side effects- numbness, pins and needles, tingling, twitching muscles, dizziness, total brain fog and confusion, lethargy, weakness etc etc. I am 5ft 7 and I started out weighing 10st4 and in one month, I was down to 9st. I had no appetite at all and my nausea was severe. It was a chicken and egg situation as I needed to take these really strong antibiotics to get rid of my infection but the side effects were overwhelming. I started to do a lot of research and discovered an article called "The Bitter Pill". This is written by doctors who themselves have suffered from serious reactions to fluoroquinolone/quinolone drugs, including metronidazole. It is a very interesting read and will show you just how many people have long lasting side effects after taking these pills which can break the blood brain barrier and can cause permanent damage like PN and CNS problems. I started to take zinc, magnesium, B Vits, C Vits and D Vits and gentle exercise. I am now 6 weeks AFTER finishing the antibiotics and I am about 50% better. I only regained my appetite after one month of being off the tablets. Antibiotics do have a place and they save thousands of lives but for some people, the side effects are long lasting and take months to dissipate. I know how scary this whole experience is but try and stay strong. Fuel your body with Vitamins and STAY AWAY from sugar as it causes flare ups. Get lots of sleep as this helps the body and brain to recover and take a really good pro biotic. I wish you all a full recovery.
besides luxaper flagyl and cipro are the worst drugs made. they should be banned from sales. doctors should be banned from prescribing them
No kidding on the research! Side effects are horrible. I took my last one today. After reading these comments I'm worried about the lasting side effects. Just want to feel normal again!
I was prescribed Flagyl and felt so ill I couldnt continue after the 9th tablet (400mg twice a day with food) My mouth tasted like metal. (and still does slightly) I was getting blisters on the sides of my tongue. Loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea and just exhausted beyond belief. I normally go to the gym several times a week. Now all I want to do is sleep! I feel emotional and like my head is swimming. I took my last tablet 6 days ago! Surely this isnt normal. I will never take it again Surely there must be an alternative!!
Just had to come back and encourage others. Took Flagyl in May, experienced many side effects. After over four months I am beginning to feel "normal" again. The dizziness/woosie/lightheaded feeling, off balanced and other symptoms have substantially subsided. Like so many have said...it takes time. Hope everyone is healed or healing :).
I have suffered from BV for years and my OBGY-N always prescribes metronidazole inserts because I cannot tolerate the oral treatment. I find that the inserts produce milder side effects that are more tolerable than the oral tablets, enabling completion of a twice a day, 5-day course. I have also modified my diet, eliminating most sugar, including fruits and taking a daily probiotic. I noticed that the usual yeast outbreak following a course of metronidazole is not as severe since I made these changes. Sadly, I have discovered that doctors at hmo's are not given the latitude to help patients by exploring alternative treatments outside of big Pharma. We the suffering public need to become the stewards of our health care and not live it to the doctors alone.
Hi Posters metranidizole combined with Cipro is given for infection to bone aka osteomyelitis.
The combination reaches bone infection which has no oxygen supply. The original poster obviously had this back in 2011 and hopefully is well past it.
Any heavy GI side effects are significant please contact a physician.
Has anyone experienced extremely oily skin as a result??
Not sure if this will paste: youtube.com/watch?v=XgTiGhFrBgc. The person who made this is one of a huge community of people bringing awareness. We are ALL fighters but also making sure no one gets too depressed that does not heal as that does not mean someone is doing something wrong. Some just get hit worse than others at times. The fight goes on.
Jlove, sorry that you are dealing with these symptoms.
I noticed that exercising helped me tremendously with the tingling and numbness in my feet. Also, make sure that you are not low in B12 and magnesium. By exercising I just walked or rode my recumbent bike, nothing too strenuous. Also, taking a relaxing warm epsom salt bath. Then of course time :)...over time many of my symptoms began to subside.
It's been over 3 months and I'm able to say many of my symptoms have subsided. In checking other sites and reading so many posts it seems that many have noticed relief after 3 months. The remaining dizziness/lightheaded, brain fog, off balanced feeling when walking, occasional anxiety have improved and I believe they will be also be gone soon.
Of course we are all different and I know others who have taken Flagyl with zero symptoms, but just a heads up concerning the possible side effects and then reassurance that they will subside would have been so beneficial. All the doctors that I've seen and only one mentioned that my symptoms could possibly be from the Flagyl.
I would like to say that I appreciate this site so much. I've been off flagyl for about a week and am having tingling and numbness and tremors. You all are very inspirational. Are there some things you'd recommend??
Thanks for those who are providing encouraging words for those of us who are still dealing with side effects. Other than time would you say anything else help with the recovery process?
It's been a little over 14 months since I've been off flagell and I still get dizzy once in a while and off balance. Still get a panic attack once in a while. They have gotten less and less and are not as strong. Get depressed once in a while as well. Had 1000 mgs. a day for three weeks for intestinal infection after abdominal surgery. It was the only antibiotic that would cure this particular bacteria. I can't even describe what it felt like everyday after my third dose. The worst drug ever but it did clear up the infection.
Hi,
I went through the same side effects and I can say now that I am improving. It takes me few months to see that. If it can help.
Hi Ali,
How have you been? Has anything helped you? Thanks Melissa
It has been over 2 months since I took Flagyl. Surely, there are others who have gone through the dizziness, off balanced, lethargic side effects and are now doing A LOT better. Please encourage those who are still on this recovery journey. I'm still dealing with feeling dizzy and off balanced when walking. There has been improvement, but when does this all subside?

I was prescribed flaygl 1500mg a day for colon infection . I had side effects told dr about it and was told to continue medication that there was no other medication to take. Now I have been suffering from no sleep for two months now. I think my sleep cycle nerves in my brain have either been damged or died. This is a horrible way to live and I pray for healing every day. I no longer get sleepy or drowsey matter how much sleep I do not get. This is the worst thing in the world I have ever heard of or experienced. Been to many dr and most just pass it off as no big deal some have said it may be reaction from metronidazole. I stopped the medicine after ten days on June 29 2015. It is August 30 2015 today and I still can't go to sleep.
