Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 43) (Top voted first)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

Marie, why did you take it all at once? At this point, it doesn't matter, but please never do that with any medication ever. Tylenol killed 300 people last year, mainly due to liver failure from people overdosing. But to answer your question, yes. It can be the metronidazole. It can injure the brain and it may take time to heal. Some people recover quickly--others take longer. There are a few, like Anne and I, who haven't fully recovered but there's a higher chance of recovery than not recovering.

My niece, who is a pharmacist just ended up in hospital with a hematoma on the brain.. and they checked her liver function and found that years of taking Aleve and Ibuprofen has damaged her liver. So best be careful with ALL meds...

Thank u for ure concern on why I took so much at once Erin, that is why I am here, however my doctor ordered it like that. I did call the pharmacy this morning and talk to the pharmacist about it she assured me this should not be related to Flagyl due to the fact it's been in my system for three days already I just hope she is right! Maybe I'm a worry wart! And I hope all u ladies and ure family recover very soon from this medication! Best wishes!

Ah, thank you all for the info. I didn't realize they could give you that much, that quickly. I've talked to people before who took metronidazole because it was simply their go-to antibiotic. And it only works on very particular infections.

Yeah, my doctor said the same thing, Marie. So did Anne's and pretty much everyone I've talked to who's had a bad reaction to this drug. Sorry to say, but the medical community is in denial about the dangers of drugs. You are not being a worry wart--they are being purposefully ignorant.

I agree with Erin. They told me The same thing. That it could not be flagyl, because it was out off my system a long time ago. The sad thing is that they Will not belive that flagyl can do damage. To me They said that it was "all in my head ". They are so wrong.
But like i wrote before Marie. Dont panic. Maybe it Will pass quickly.

But thank you for the info about dosage. I didn't realize you could take so much so quickly. That's kinda scary.

How are you guys? im living with this for 3 years already.. Please guys dont believe in all medicine.. Come back to nature and try everything to be better but choose non toxic things... Im on a plant based diet, juicing a lot of fresh fruits, nuts and seeds.. Cannabis and be positive ..i see a difference. i am more active now and my hair and skin became good.. Medicine and my diet makes me so old... So i think the thing we can trust now for healing is god.. Not man made.. I have pain yes but days get better where i can be a normal and there are days that are worse where the body needs a lot of vitamins and rest. we are poison.. But we are all hopeful that this would no longer control ourselves.. I learn to hope now and to dream again.. actually plant based diet makes me forget about my condition ..that i was poison. i think all the things ive tried ..this is the only thing that stops my inflammation ..try and try to be better but make sure it is non toxic things.. and connect to god for help ..to dream and be happy again even if i have this pain ..i think i can live with this and still i am happy ..cultured nuts and seeds help. i make nut milks ..cake made by fruit. Salad.. Baked seeds ..and a hit of cd. godbless us all. have a good day to all.

I would like to suggest that we all seek a solution that works for us. Personally if I'm having veggies and fruits I'm eating it rather than drinking it.
Finally had my annual physical and doc said that this Ataxia was caused by the metronidazole... now I'm to see a neurologist to see if we can figure out a solution that does NOT involve drugs. Meanwhile I'm working with a nutritionist that has helped get my gut to move well for the first time in 30 yrs... an issue that the doc never spent any time on solving. Next, I did some online research about ataxia and learned that I need to stop drinking coffee or any caffiene and be totally gluten free (OBTW - I went gluten free - about 99% of the time last year and lost 35 lbs.. and then the gut issues caused another 10 lbs loss.. NOT complaining mind you...
But I can't get to see the neurologist until end of month so I've started working one on one with a fellow who can teach me tai chi and may graduate to yoga if I can get limber enough.. So, will report back when I've met with the neurologist.. Meanwhile I'm using a cane when walking anywhere outside the house.

Hi cyrill
So Nice to hear from you. You seem to heal more and more. Thats good when you have good days. Do you feel like you did before then?
What kind off pain do you still have?
Im 13 months out, and for me, its not going good. I eat healthy, no Coffee, no gluten, only organic. But for me it feels like my body is shutting down. Tell me more about your diet? Do you take probiotics?

Hi bjh

It Will not move like it should, have alot off pain do you have any suggestions? I only eat organic, no gluten, even tried cut out Milk for a while, no Coffee. Do you take any probiotics?
It was you that had a terrible off balance like me and dizziness? Wasnt it? Do you also have fatigue or pain in the body? Im so sorry that flagyl Hurt us so bad.

First, yes, I'm having balance issues and dizziness when I walk. I observed and figured out that I'm quite ok when sitting down, even when driving. I have issues when I walk, seem to walk with my feet wide apart to remain balanced and have to walk looking down as looking up makes me dizzy. It is called Ataxia...do some research on it.. My doc finally admitted it was caused by the medication.

Second: well, first a question... do you have a gall bladder?

I talked with a nutritionist...who is the only person that took me seriously about the almost constant constipation and she said that because I have no gallbladder my food is not being digested properly and then the other issue is NOT enough stomach acid. So I was advised to take Ox Blood with each meal...just one capsule.. and HCL with pepsin...that's all in one capsule. Within 24-48 hrs my gut started moving. I was having so much pain and could feel every movement in my gut and I swear that it felt like there was some kind of animal in there and I could feel it move across my body... I could feel it with my hand on my abdomen. And I was having a lot of pain in my back right about the same level as the bottom of my sternum. The pain was pretty intense. Now I've been having a lot of diarrhea but I do believe that is related to what I've been eating. I am gluten free...lost 35 lbs the first year when I stopped eating wheat, etc. Recently I've gone caffeine free and avoiding sugars as well. I'm still in the process of evaluating what to do next for the gut.

For the dizziness and balance issue I'm taking some private Thai Chi lessons to see if that helps at all...my research shows that it likely will... All this while I wait until end of the month to see a neurologist...who knows how they may be able to help...perhaps vestibular physical therapy.

Hi bjh
I Will read about Ataxia
Thats great that The doctors did admit that it was because off The flagyl. Here they Will not admit anything. My life has been destroyed because off flagyl. I now have heart problems also, because of it.
Can The ataxia get better? Have they said anything about that?

Well for me, im dizzie and off balance when im also sittning down. But im much worse when im walking. I can feel that my brain can not balance me, horrible

No i dont have a gall bladder. I had it removed 12 years ago. I have exactly The same that you said. I can feel every movement in my stomach and have so much pain. Im eating probiotics, but thats not helping either. I dont know if we have hcl here in sweden, but i Will look at that. I have read about enzyms for The stomach, maybe i Will try that also. Its like my stomach can not function any more since flagyl.

Keep us updated about thai Chi, if you see some progress, and also about seeing The neurologist. Im going to see one in a week. I hope she take this serious and not send me home and says everything Will be better with time.

From my research it is possible to help the ataxia... whether or not it can be totally resolved I don't know...I'll let you know what the neurologist says and how I feel about the TaiChi. I've got another private session today..

I believe you can find the HCL with Pepsin in Sweden as well as here.... but if you have no gall bladder find the Ox Bile also... take one of each with meals. If it is going to work you should notice a difference by the 3rd day I think.

Hang in there... oh, one thing the thai chi instructor said is that we are NOT supposed to balance ourselves with our brain...but rather with the core of our body, our stomach.. I'm doing the exercises he gave me to do.. not enough but doing them. I'll report by end of week whether I see any difference after the 3rd class.

Bjh,

Yes that would be very nice of you, to update how it goes. I hope you can find relief with The tai Chi. I Will tell you what my neurologist says. But i also have a terrible tingling and numbness from head to toe.

Well i found a thing called ergozym over here. It has Pepsi and hcl in it and enzymes. Im eating reflux tablets every day, so i will ask my doctor before i buy it. But i hope that it can help me. Thanks for your advice.

Okay, so you have some exercises to help with rhe balance, i hope you will see improvements soon.. I hope the neurologist can help me with something. For me its my balance and dizziness. Tonight i woke up and the room was spinning. The off balance is way worse when im walking though. I wonder if i also have ataxia? Or maybe it have to do with my severe neuropathy. Everything is a mystery still, after 13 months.

I hope we can get better from this all. Maybe its going to take a long time though.

BJH, Anna--that's weird. I don't have a gallbladder, either.

Erin so you dont have a gall bladder either. Weird. But you dont have problems with your gut now?

I had problems when this first happened, and there were issues for about four months. The worst was the first six weeks--complete loss of appetite, mild nausea, and the feeling of being full after only a couple of bites of something. Also, my gag reflex was ridiculously sensitive--at one point, I couldn't brush my teeth due to the gag reflex.

Thats sounds like me Erin.
When i first took flagyl i had no appetite, extreme nausea, i also felt like my stomach was full after just a few bites, extreme pain and more. But after 6 months i could eat more and my stomach felt some what fine. I had an appetite Again. But since this with my heart happened its even worse then before. I have pain, my stomach try to move The food, but it dosent seem to work. I have no appetite and i have pain Again, nausea and i feel so full in the stomach Again. I hope it can get better, like The last time. Because this weight loss is not fun anymore. fortunately i was a heavy woman before.

I've had a feeling for over 2 yrs that things were not moving through my gut and would have lots of constipation and then for some odd reason a bout of diarrhea and for one month I lost 5 lbs because when I was hungry I could only eat a bite and then felt like it wouldn't go down..... went to doc... she was more interested in my noisy gut and wanted to send me off to a hospital to do a breath test to see what bacteria was in there causing all that noise... I didn't go because she wasn't dealing with the issue I went to see her for...then when I finally got my reg doc to pay attention I was sent downstairs to the lab for a breath test that didn't need to be done at a hospital....and that showed that I had H. Pylori for which I was rxed Flagyl and started all this other stuff. grrrhhhh...
