Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 31)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

It has been almost a year since I took Metronidazole and experienced a plethora of side effects. Thanks God that I'm feeling a lot better although I also have bouts of anxiety, aches, feeling off balanced and slow thinking. It's my prayers that this medication will be taken off the market. I was hoping to hear back from others who are feeling "normal". We all need encouragement.

Hi Again melissa
Ohh so you missed The call, i hope she Will try to call you Again
I cant stand doctors either now. I thought they would help me, but no, they dont admit anything with flagyl. They only blame all this with depression and so on.
No i dont take any b12 now. I had to stop a lot off supplements because of my stomach. So im only taking omega 3 for my brain now and vitamin d. I took a lot off supplements, but i have to heal my gut to. But maybe i Will try b12 Again later on. So a small doses of b12 helped you some?
By The way melissa, The thing that you wrote to Erin. I think we have The same damage like The ones Who has been Hurt from Fqs. Its toxicity with that to.
melissa, do you also have a lot of pain in the body? I have soo much joint pain and muscle pain. Its also Hard to handle
hugs

Hi i have faith
I also think flagyl should be out off market, and should not be prescribed, only in life or death situations.
Thats great that you feel a lot better than in the beginning, but its sad that you have symptoms still
Do you feel The aches in the whole body?

Hi Anna,
Yes b12 helps me w depression brain fog. I need to take probiotic what kind do you take? I spoke with a very kind woman from mitochondrial disease and she said that the only way is to have a neurologist do testing and give a script to see a specialist in mitochondrial disease in ny city. She said it takes a very long time to get an apt. She said either you can have it genetically and the flagyl made it come out or the flagyl could have made the body have mitochondrial dysfunction which would be better because that is treatable and curable. So I am hoping if we have mitochondrial issues its dysfunction and not the disease. Her daughter and her both have it and she asked if anyone in my family has it? So I'm thinking if that is it that it is the dysfunction type but there is soo much testing for it and I don't trust or have a good neurologist. I feel like we are on our own. She did say if you have this to try and excercise that can make everything better. So that's my plan little at a time. Been hard cause have felt out of breath slightly off balance weak lately out of nowhere. I am wondering if it's because I was taking care of mom who's on oxygen and boyfriend who both got the flu. I dunno. I pray for all of us to heal, this is crazy. Im 38 been taking care of sick family members for years I thought this was going to be a time to start my life have a baby, now I just hope I don't die or suffer the rest of my life from this. Do you take Epsom salt baths, I take them when feeling worst seems help a bit. On the bright side people have still healed two years out so maybe there is still hope for us.

Hi melissa
Yes off course we can heal, i have read People that it has taken years to recover, they recover slowly. I know what you mean, im also afraid this is my life now, not knowing if this is permanent or not. Its The most scariest thing i have go through. I hope then that this is The dysfunction and not The disease. I have been in the beginning at a neurologist, and it didnt make any difference. She said that i have to live my life. I told her that i can hardly walk, and so dizzie and off balance, she didnt know why. And she was a neurologist, so i think we just have to help our selves. The doctor said that i have to go to a neurologist Again, but they dont belive that flagyl did this to me. I did nerve tests, it didnt show neuropathy, but it showed damage in my feet and some in my hands. The only explanation they gave me was that i have damage there, like The diabetics has. And i am not an diabetics. Thats why i have so much pain in my legs and feets, but i have pain in my whole body, thats awful to live with.
Im also 38 years. My fiance should move in with me when this all happen, but we had to do that later on, i cant deal with that now. And we also thought about kids, but now im afraid that im never going to have a family, because i hardly cant take care of my self. I also hope that we all get Well and heal. Its so sick that we have been so damage, from a medication that would heal us. Its just a nightmare.
I dont take magnesium salt baths, but i have been taking magnesium oil, but i had to quit it yesterday, i got rashes all over my chest. But magnesium is very good for The nerve pain.
Im taking a probiotics, but im going to a naturopath now, so he gives me some herbs to heal my gut, so i have to quit The probiotics. So im taking less and less. And to be honest, i feel more strange with The dizziness, off balance and headpressure when im taking probiotics, so i seem to react very bad to everything i put in my body.
And melissa, we have to fight, i belive we can heal, but its going to take time. I just take a day at a time. I also have trouble breathing. I wonder why?
Can you work melissa? Im on a sick leave now, but i miss my job so much. I feel like my whole life is on hold

Hi, Melissa. Metronidazole is in a different class of antibiotics than fluoroquinolones like Cipro and Levaquin; however, both are broad-spectrum antibiotics and both can act as a nuerotoxin on the brain. I don't know about metronidazole causing anemia, but metronidazole can cause serious stomach issues and anorexia, leading to malnutrition (I had some malnutrition when I was at my worst).

As far as feeling better...I am doing much better now than I was last summer. It's been a very slow road and I still have flare ups of symptoms (I had a flare up on Monday, correlating with my menstrual cycle--anything that taxes my body and I can have a flare up). But it's better than a few months ago and it was better a few months ago than it was over the summer. I'm not 100% well but I can enjoy life again. It's been about 9 months for me. I don't know if this information will help anyone feel hopeful, but there were times when it felt like I'd never get better, but it did eventually start to happen.

Thanks for your reply Erin, how many doses did you take and how many times again? What have you found helped you because I have been feeling sicker lately and wonder if I am getting worse sometimes. My whole body aches never had that symptom until week ago. I am 11 months now and I was given this med six times last year, I didn't start having a bad reaction until the fifth time and then the 6th time did me in on the third night I took it. Mine was taken vaginally. Any advice would help thank you

Hi Anna,
I can't believe you are the same age, yes we must be strong and not let this poison get the best of us. I actually been a dog walker while taking care of my mom who recently got diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and needs oxygen. But prior I was looking for an art teaching job was an art teacher. I stopped doing the dog walking the last few weeks because everyone got sick then I started feeling unwell. Plus my kitty cat passed away just before his 20 the birthday he was the lil light of my life. Since this happened with the metronidazole I was soo ill all I did was sleep and try force myself to eat even though was nauseas and had no want to eat. Then the b12 helped but gave me insomnia now I'm back to feeling unwell like beginning but have trouble sleeping so I can't get away from feeling sick and have new symptom of all over body aches swollen glands. I don't know what the heck is going on. Is this the first or second neurologist you have seen? Def get another opinion if you can. I feel like we need maybe to see neurologist who specializes in biology or something. And a toxicologist. I recently read that metronidazole can cause increase in liver enzymes can cause lithium toxicity or renal issues. It said to have your creatine and lithium levels checked. I will look into that. Have you seen N endocrinologist? I had high level prolactin that could cause problems with ur pituitary gland I have to have that rechecked. I will keep searching. Hopefully we will be healed sooner than later and one day get to meet and be pregnant lol. Thanks for keeping in touch

Hi Again melissa
And thanks for your answer
Yes im 38 years old to, going to be 39 this year. And not knowing if im going to be better or not, when i had so much plans, its scary. Im so sorry you are getting worse. Is it The pain in the body Who is worse now, and The insomnia? My body pain is also bad. And my joints are making loud popping sounds all The time.
I have been to one neurologist. The second time i was talking to her on The Phone, but she didnt know why i have all of this from flagyl. and she didnt seem to care. But i saw her early on, when this all happen. I saw her, i think it was november last year, and talked to her on The Phone in december. But she didnt seem to care to find out what was wrong.ohh im so sorry your cat passed away and your Mother getting ill, in all this. Its Hard to deal with all this when we also are sick. My fiance has also getting sick in all this, and had to go to The hospital twice. so now im not only worried about my self, im also worried about him to, so i have to be strong.
No i havent been to an endochronologist, i dont know what that is. Have you been to one?
I wonder what is happening in our bodies. And The doctors dont seem to have any clue either i just want to get Well. Hugs

I really think everyone should write in to Dr Phil. It would be a great way to force attention on this medication. Also I see that it is affecting women a lot more than it it men. Could be cause the med is prescribed more to women, not sure. But most men I've seen have bad side effects from it recover a lot fast than the women.

Hi Luna
Here in sweden it is more prescribed to women because The gynecologist are prescribing them alot here, even to pregnant women they told me. They are also using them for tooth infection alot. Its a scary medication and The sad thing is, that when People go back to their doctors they say "Ohhh no it cant be flagyl and The medication is out of your system a long time ago " and they blame it on depression and so on. So its scary that a lot of People is damage from flagyl and alot of more antibiotics out there , so they use it Again and Again and Again on People.

a few years back I wrote to Dr. Oz. I was called two hours later to see if I would go on a show about chronic pain. It was a joke. Because J&J is a sponser, I was not allowed to say the name of the medication that caused this--for me Levaquin. The women, also, on stage were allowed to talk about their car accidents but I was not allowed to say the name of the medication--and oddly, compared to just those two women, I was damaged much worse from the levaquin. I would have been a chance an it was not allowed. Yet, they still called trying to get me on the show for a few weeks. If only they would allow me to state the truth.

I started really improving about 8 months after I took the flagyl. For the depression and anxiety I just waited it out. I think the flagyl basically destroyed a good deal of the good bacteria, and there is a link between mood and gut bacteria. So eat yogurt every day and experiment with different probiotics. Kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut are good. You can make your own or you can buy decent varieties at natural foods, whole foods, Co op type places in the refrigerated section. It will fade with time. And yes I had head pressure, dizziness, brain fog too. Those are all gone. Horrible fatigue, that is also gone. There is a decent bit of peer reviewed literature you can find on flagyl and brain damage. Fortunately most of this damage is reversible. Most of the irreversible damage occurs when flagyl is given over a long period (some people are prescribed it for months at a time). Like you I was very scared that I would never recover. It has now been a year and I am just about back to normal. Hang in there.

Flagylsucks, thanks for the words of encouragement. I started noticing improvement after about 5 months, then gradually many of the symptoms began to subside. I agree about the brain and gut connection and began to see improvement when I took Pepzin GI, magnesium, omegas, primrose oil and probiotics. Praying for our recovery.

I'm glad to hear you have recovered I was given this med like once every other month for at least last year prior and few times couple previous years. I'm so scared because. After horrendous reaction I had to b12 shot I have been slowly going down hill and wondering if I need b12 or developed pernicious anemia. I'm thinking I have some malabsorption problems. Terrible issues with memory brain fog depersonalizations, weakness all over, shortness of breath. I'm soo scared and no Drs are helping. I don't know what to do anymore next month it will be a year, very depressing I hope this is not permanent or continues to be progressive. Family and friends have no clue and feel helpless as do I.

Shog, some people recovery pretty quickly from Flagyl, and other people take more time. So if you don't notice you're in the quick recovery group, don't feel discouraged. Just because it takes longer doesn't mean it won't get better. Just don't have any doctor tell you, "once the drug's out of your system, you should be fine," nonsense. They are clueless when it comes to adverse drug reactions--it's even on the FDA label that this drug can still affect you even if it's out of your system.
