Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 3)

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

Hi Erin, I'd like that if we could somehow exchange our emails privately. I don't think you can do this here. I wish I had done what you did...get more sleep. The pain is worse at night and my feet and legs keep me awake. I'm going to try going to bed earlier if it's not too late now. My grandson wasn't with me most of the summer because I couldn't take care of him. He's glad to be back home with me. :) He's a good boy! It' a good thing you have your husband for support. Hi I have been very concerned and moved by what I have been reading and my prayers and good wishes go out to Erin.Its been 12 weeks tomorrow since my son stopped taking the drug and like what now the symptoms have come back with a vengeance to the point where I felt to be back at square one.However the last couple of days he seems more like his old self.He suffers with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy the drug seems to effect him in waves afew days he appears better and then he relapses for a few days.Like everyone else we hope he makes afull recovery as life is difficult enough.

Dawn, what are your son's symptoms after taking flagyl? Has he seen any improvement? I am so saddened to hear of a child suffering from this toxic medicine.

Hi Erin my son took 1200 mg for 6 days then I stopped him taking it.He was exceptionally anxious screaming when I left him alone that lasted for about 2 weeks.Then he went for about 2 weeks not sleeping and him complaining of stomach ache and feeling sick then for the next 8 weeks he has had bouts of a great deal of actual sickness.It seems now to come in waves for 3 or 4 days he is ok and then a few days of sickness.Its been 12 weeks since he stopped taking the drug and he is not over it yet.The last 3 months has been a nightmare the drug has been like a poison and I am reluctant to subject him to any more drugs.

Dawn,

Have you tried putting your son on a probiotic? That may help with his stomach pain. I know antibiotics are notorious for destroying good stomach bacteria. Just a thought. 12 weeks is a long time to be in pain, but of course here I am 4+ months after being poisoned by this horrible drug with no improvement. I hope this tip is of some help to you.

Hi Erin yes I have been giving him a probiotic and I hope it is helping him.Today,so far,has been one of his better days so I am just keeping my fingers crossed.

Dawn, I am glad to hear he is having some relief today. Please keep me posted on his progress. I am a bit perplexed by his dosage. I read up a little bit on that after I got sick, and I would have to think with a child's body weight, he should have been on a lower dosage. I didn't weigh more than 115 lbs. when I was administered the drug, which I seem to remember would have qualified me for a child's dosage. I don't have the specific page bookmarked that I found, but I remember specifically that the child's dosage was larger. I don't think doctors take body weight into account at all.

Does anyone know if there is a class action against the manufacturer for these types of damages?

I guess depending on what country you are in depends on the manufacturer.. I can't believe that there is not a warning about this on the paperwork.

My doctor was surprised when I told her about my continuing side effects and what I had read on here. I am still having problems but not as badly, waking up in the mornings feels like am having to fight to come to and having heady dizzy feeling during the day, I am taking B12 ,Probiotic and eating yogurt

Has any one contacted the manufactures in their countries.

Pat, how long have you been experiencing the side effects of dizziness, and how long did you take the drug? I am so sorry to hear of your suffering. It's been a 4 month nightmare for me.

I have not contacted anyone but plan to. I'm gathering evidence right now with tests, brain scans, etc. to see if I can get some concrete proof of the damage I know (and my doctors concur) that I've suffered.

I finished 10 days @ 1,500 per day on August 29, the symptoms seem to be getting less, although I still have to fight to wake up in the mornings and feel a foggy head most of the time. Yesterday at yoga I had a problem with balancing I thought this had gone away... my doctor says symptoms should go away...but this is a very strong drug.

If you have a problem posting I think its because a company name has been mentioned, so replace some letters with a period.. it works

Pat, I'm sorry to hear of your struggles but glad to know that you are at least seeing some improvement. I haven't had any balance issues, just the severe dizziness - especially when reading and trying to watch TV (any panoramic shots send me reeling).

I have found out that the Metronidazole I was given was in fact a generic drug Flagyl, manufactured by AA Pharma Inc of Toronto. I phoned them and got an answering machine now am waiting to see if I get a reply, their number should you want it is 905 669 0528

Well as to be expected I never received a return call, so I have just phoned again.. no replies but request you leave a message, after 10 minutes going from one extension to another I did manage to reach someone who gave me another number 1-800-667-4708 and transfered me..... after another 5 minutes on hold I left another message...surprise the number is in England and they are only open 8 - 5 ( English hours), so Dawn maybe you can phone them..

I won't hold my breath waiting for a return call. Just hope if they do call they remember the time difference

I wonder if we all phone it might get some action

Yeah, I'm not surprised you've been given the run-around like this. The manufacturer must know this drug has these potential side effects, because they are listed right on the warning label. There MUST be a US contact. I will research and report my findings.

Hi Pat I have just dialled that number and it hasnt been recognised.Its been 13 weeks today since my son stopped taking the drug and I am happy to say that for the last 4/5 days he has been more like his normal self I hope it continues.Good Luck to all.
